Antioch mosaics. A corpus.
New English Original bdg. HC. Large 4to. (32 x 28 cm). In English. 320 p., color ills. "The book includes the most important Antioch mosaic pavements displayed in the Hatay Archaeological Museum in Antakya, Turkey, seventeen different institutions in the USA and the Louvre. The mosaics were brought to light in and around Antioch on the Orontes (Antakya), Seleucia Pieria (Çevlik) and Daphne (Defne) in 1932-37. As a group, the Antioch mosaics demonstrate a remarkable continuity with the Hellenistic artistic tradition as seen in the preservation of classical subjects and decorative devices, such as the illusionistic treatment of the inhabited vine scrolls or ribbon borders. The common use of multiple borders to frame figural panels at Antioch is also reminiscent of the framing of Hellenistic emble-mata, or portable panels prepared in workshops and then inserted at the sites. The three-dimensional treatment of interiors and landscapes, the naturalistic representation of the human anatomy, and the variety of colors employed for the Antiochene compositions, indicate a dependence on painting styles. Such skill in the production of stone 'paintings' effectively denies the solidity of the floor and tricks the eye of the viewer, not to mention their physical relationship to the room itself. Finds from nearby sites (Apamea, Zeugma, Shahba-Philippopolis, and Palmyra) are similarly 'traditional' and point to the existence of a 'school' of eastern art beyond that of the Antiochene workshops. Such illusionism reaches the height of fashion during the Severan period in Antioch.".

Mosaics in Istanbul.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (32 x 24,5 cm). In English. 175 p., color ills. "The book brings together the extant mosaics of the Great Palace (Büyük Saray Mosaic Museum), Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya Museum), the Virgin Pammakaristos (Fethiye Museum), St. Saviour in Chora (Kariye Museum) and Istanbul Archaeological Museums. Except for the few panels brought from elsewhere and now kept in the Istanbul Archaeological Museums, all of the mosaics in this book were made in Istanbul, known then as Constantinople. Chronologically, the earliest of these mosaics is from the late Roman period and the latest from the early fourteenth century. Even if they are far from giving the development of the art of mosaic in the capital these pavements reflect the importance that was afforded to this art. In this volume they are grouped under the name of the monument to which they belong. Constantinople suffered so many natural disasters and had to be rebuilt so many times that the mosaics which decorated the buildings of the late Roman/early Byzantine period, lie under modern buildings in the debris of fires and earthquakes. Unless some of these are encountered accidentally during construction work and salvaged, there is almost no hope of bringing them to light.".

Mosaics of Antioch.
New English Original bdg. HC. Oblong large 8vo. (23 x 23 cm). In English. 72 p., 50 color plates. "The book includes the finest of the Antioch mosaic pavements displayed in the Hatay Archaeological Museum in Antakya, Turkey. The pavements were brought to light in and around Antioch on the Orontes (Antakya), Seleucia Pieria (Çevlik) and Daphne (Defne) in 1932-37. The excavations have shown that in the whole area there was not a single better-class house without mosaic pavements decorating its entrance, halls, dining rooms, corridors and sometimes the bottoms of its pools. In addition to pavements which came from structures built in different periods, mosaics which came from the different levels of the same buildings have enabled scholars to construct a gradual and unbroken development of classical Roman mosaics covering its iconographic and stylistic changes from the first century of the Common Era to the beginning of the sixth.".

The Hittites and Hattusa.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (31 x 26,5 cm). In English. 184 p., 270 color ills. "In addition to the Hittite capital Hattusa the book includes detailed study, pictures and plans of some other sites like Yazilikaya, Alaca Höyük, Kanes/Nesa (Kültepe) and Sarissa(Kusakli Höyük). The Neo-Hittite sites like Karkamis, Azatiwataya or Yesemek and some rarely-visited Hittite reliefs are also included. Sometime in the 1650s BC, a noble clan, who would in our time be named Hittites, making Hattusa its capital, brought together the small independent Anatolian city kingdoms. In a short period and for the first time in the history of the peninsula, it became a kingdom strong enough to challenge the other world kingdoms of the Late Bronze Age, namely Mycenaeans, Egypt, Mitanni/Hanigalbat, Babylonia and the later Assyria. The difficulty of bringing together so many principalities of different size, ethnicity and language under the same flag and competing with well-established sophisticated cultures of the time is evident in the Hittite history and culture. Centred in the large curve of the Halys, which they called the Marasantiya, they had loose frontiers, their longest extending from the Aegean to the other side of the Euphrates (Hittite Mala) and from the Pontic Mountains to the Mediterranean and the source of the Orontes River. The rock-reliefs, which are still spread all around the country, show the routes by which their armies campaigned. The artifacts of their unsophisticated material culture are among the most interesting items of many museums. In Turkey, even if the traveller may not have the chance to visit their capital Hattusa, the name of the Hittites greets him at every turn.". Nuh ve Cudi Dagi Sempozyum Bildirileri. 27-29 September 2013. German explorers have visited the summit of Mount Cudi since 1899. Unique photographs were taken and much fascinating information has been assembled. Although I did not visit the site so far myself, I was able to explore the summit by using Google Earth images, through which I indeed managed to put together many important pieces of the jigsaw puzzle on the possible location of what may actually remain of Noah's ark. Johannes Lepsius Figure 2: Johannes Lepsius (Lepsius House, Potsdam) The first photo ever taken on the summit of Mount Cudi stems·from Johannes Lepsius and dates to the summer of 1899. It is printed in his book »Ex Oriente Lux, in which he reports his »Besteigung des Ararat« (»Ascent of Ararat«). He explains: Not the 'Masis' at the border of Russia, but the Cudi on the northern edge of Mesopotamia is the Ararat of Scripture as (found) in oriental tradition, Lepsius was bornin Berlin on December i5, i858, while his father Karl Richard Lepsius (1810-1884) is considered to be the founding father of German Egyptology, who in turn was a friend of the famous naturalist Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859). Lepsius' mother, Elizabeth (1828-1899) was the daughter of the famous composer Bernhard Klein (1793-1832) and the great-granddaughter of the writer Friedrich Nicolai (1733-1811). Consequently at Lepsius' home several influential personalities within the fields of politics, culture and ecclesiastical life regularly gathered. Johannes Lepsius himself had studied math and philosophy, while he received a doctorate in Theology in i880. While he was an assistant reverend at the German

The art of weights and measures.= Agirlik ve ölçü sanati. [Exhibition catalogue]. Coord. by Zeynep Ögel.
New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 183 p., color and b/w ills. Setting forth concepts related to weighing and measuring meant developing both practical and philosophical links with the world. When ancient civilizations used seeds produced in the fertile soils of Mesopotamia to establish the first units of weight, the observations they made in relation to the act of measuring created a springboard for civilizations to thrive. The 2nd millennium BC saw the frontiers of discovery advancing along the trade routes between Mesopotamia and Anatolia. While the fascination with precision in weighing and measuring continued, there was a corresponding migration of myths from the realms of the gods to the land of mortals, and concepts like truth and justice became associated with the balancing of the suspended pans of weighing scales. In ancient Egypt the sins of the deceased were weighed on a set of scales, while in ancient Greek and Roman cultures, the weighing scale was a symbol of justice and an indispensable illustrative element in the depiction of gods and goddesses. In Byzantine society, too, the act of just and accurate weighing resonated deeply with ethical sensibilities and recalled the weighing of souls. And in the Ottoman Empire, precise weighing represented the foundations of trust, not only in trade but also just as notably in religious life. "Man is the measure of all things: of the things that are, that they are, of the things that are not, that they are not," proclaimed Protagoras. The endeavor to measure the world with a handful of units brought forth the capacity to recreate it in the abstract. As the measurement of discovery became the substance of myths, weighing and measuring, beyond being mere physical actions, became an important means of self-expression to those captivated by the universe and what lay beyond the boundaries of knowledge. With a selection of objects from the Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Anatolian Weights and Measures Collection, The Art of Weights and Measures aims to explore, through the eyes of civilizations, gods, merchants, master craftsmen, and their apprentices from the 2nd millennium BC to the present day, how weights and measures have shaped economies, cultures, and intercultural relations, their impact on social dynamics of trust, and their journey towards becoming standardized units.

(Felix Pirson Istanbul, November 2.
