The Directorate of Istanbul Archaeological Museums was appointed to lead the archaeological excavations at Uskudar, Sirkeci, Sultanahmet and Yenikapi station constructions of Marmaray and Metro Projects, among the most important transportation projects of Turkey. Our largest area of excavation is at Yenikapi on the Marmara coast, the area known as Langa, which housed the harbour of Byzantine Istanbul. Excavations at Theodosian Harbour brought to light, to date, a total of 31 shipwrecks of various sizes and types. Archaeological work on shipwrecks requires an entirely different expertise; therefore, our Museum has authorised Istanbul University's Department of Restoration and Conservation with the documentation, lifting, conservation-restoration works as well as preparing the shipwrecks for display at the museum. The team started the work with a big staff and has already completed the lifting of and has taken into conservation eleven shipwrecks in conformity with the international norms and standards. The book in your hands explicitly presents the work conducted by the IU team employing the latest technology available, their scientific approach and the care and importance they pay to the work. ‎Scramble for the past: A story of archaeology in the Ottoman Empire, 1753-1914.‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. Large roy. 8vo. (25 x 17 cm). In English. 519 p., color and b/w ills. Scramble for the past. A story of archaeology in the Ottoman Empire, 1753-1914. When, at the turn of the nineteenth century, Lord Elgin stripped the Parthenon of its sculptures and carried them to England, he saw himself as both preserving classical art for posterity and claiming the rightful heritage of the west. And when, soon after, the French government purchased an armless statue of Aphrodite on the island of Melos and displayed it triumphantly in the Louvre, it too identified France as the natural heir of antiquity. The Austrians and Germans, for their part, unearthed and brought home vast quantities of sculpture and architecture from throughout the Near East. Beginning in the mid-eighteenth century, European scholars and amateurs poured into Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, and Mesopotamia to explore, dig, catalogue, and cart home the material remains of the ancient world. The collections they amassed became celebrated museums; the scholarly techniques they developed formed the foundation of modern, scientific archaeology. But at the time, the lands they traversed and the antiquities they found belonged neither to the empires of Europe nor to local states; rather, the entire territory was the possession of the Ottoman Empire. What did the Ottomans think of the European passion for die past? What was their own view of the ancient worldand its heritage?Scramble for the Past explores the historiography of archaeology in the Ottoman domains between the founding of London's British Museum in 1753 and that of Istanbul's Evkaf Museum (Museum of IslamicArt) in 1914. It sees the rise of archaeology not as an alien western imposition upon the east, or indeed as a purely European invention, but as a process that emerged out of an interaction between Europe and the Ottoman world. Essays by fifteen leading international scholars explore the relationship of archaeology to politics, ideology, and national identity as well as the influences ofthe ancient finds on popular culture.Filled with anecdote and incident, richly illustrated with period paintings, sculptures, postcards, photographs, documents, and rarities from the Ottoman archives, Scramble for the Past offers a new look at the modern invention of the ancient world.‎

‎Bizans döneminde Ephesos.‎

‎New English Original bdg. 242 p. In Turkish. Color ills. Bizans döneminde Ephesos. Witnesses to a bygone culture ancient wall paintings provide direct access to the ancient way of life, and become a means of communication between their commissioner and their audience. In Ephesos for a long time wall painting was treated as a second-class citizen, as a secondary product of the excavated monuments. The remains of wall paintings at Ephesos, however, extend far beyond Terrace Houses which can be easily visited today. With this book the remnants of wall paintings in Ephesos are for the first time studied and presented in detail, claiming a new chronology and dating. From the Terrace Houses to the Grotto of St. Paul the work covers a long time span from the Hellenistic period through medieval Byzantine period, enriched with numerous colour figures.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (30 x 22 cm). In English, German, and Turkish. 367 p. Color ills. Tatarli: The return of colours.= Tatarli: Rückkehr der Farben.= Tatarli: Renklerin dönüsü. Das im 5. Jh. v. September 2010 ausgestellt. ARCHEOLOGY Anatolian civilizations Phrygia Excavations History of art.‎

‎Ages and days in Cyprus.‎

‎New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In English. 174 p., b/w ills. Ages and days in Cyprus. Having decided to tell the story of the Swedish Cyprus Expedition, it is perhaps proper to begin by relating how this expedition became a reality, especially since the question "Why did you decide to undertake an expedition to Cyprus?" has often been asked of me by many persons over a number of years. There are, after all, so many archaeologically interesting countries in the world. Why then was Cyprus chosen in preference to others? To answer that question I must tell a story, which by now is rather well known. The following scene took place during the month of March 1922. Professor Axel W. Persson of Uppsala was travelling to Greece. In a railway station in Serbia he struck up a conversation with a lively and nervous, somewhat oriental-looking man in his fifties. He asked the professor's destination, and was told that Persson was on his way to Asine in Greece to conduct archaeological excavations. "I am absolutely mad about archaeology", exclaimed this new found acquaintance. "What nationality are you, Professor?" When he learned that Professor Persson was from Sweden, he became a volcano of cordiality, embraced Persson and cried: "Well then we are almost compatriots. You see I am the Swedish consul in Cyprus! My name is Luke Zenon Pierides. My father was also the Swedish Consul, and when Norway and Sweden separated, he was offered the position of consul for Norway. This he refused and remained faithful to Sweden to his death. What a privilege and pleasure to meet a representative of this noble and high-minded nation!" After some further conversation, the consul suddenly asked: "Could you let me borrow five pounds, Professor Persson? I ran into some bad luck. The Serbian Customs took all my money and I can't get any more until I reach Constantinople." Professor Persson made a mental calculation: "Five pounds is five pounds, and quite possibly I will never see the money again. Of course there is a chance that this man is telling the truth, and if he is indeed the Swedish Consul, it would be an insult to deny him the loan." Persson thus lightened his wallet by five pounds sterling and gave them to Pierides. Pierides started to talk about Cyprus, about his home in Larnaca, containing a magnificent collection of Cypriot antiquities, he further inquired if the Swedes had considered any excavations on Cyprus and urged Persson to persuade a young Swedish archaeologist to travel to Cyprus in order to start some thorough archaeological research. After a few more minutes of archaeology and Sweden, Pierides asked to borrow another five pounds. He promised that Professor Persson would have the money without fall on his arrival in Athens. The Professor, who was not only an optimist, but also had a big heart, complied this time also with Pierides' request, but he confessed that he did not feel very optimistic when he went to inquire for his money in Athens. However, the money had indeed arrived, together with a letter from Pierides, again urging Persson to arrange for the Swedes to undertake an archaeological invasion of Cyprus. One pleasant summer-night in Asine in Greece, the kind of night when anything seems possible, Professor Persson discussed the issue with me, and recommended that I accept Pierides' invitation. I really did not know anything about Cyprus and so said, yes, without too much deliberation. The unknown beckoned. In October 1923 my wife and I travelled to Cyprus, landing in Larnaca, where Pierides received us with open arms. The unknown met me in the shape of an enormous material from the Bronze Age ready to be studied. The curator of the Cyprus Museum, Menelaos Markides, a scholar who had been archaeologically trained in England, had shortly before my arrival excavated numerous tombs from the Bronze Age. The poor man, however, fell ill with Parkinson's disease and was incapable of doing scientific work. Generously he left‎
