‎Philanthropy in Anatolia through the ages: The First International Suna and Inan Kirac Symposium on Mediterranean Civilization - March 26-29, 2019, Antalya.‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (30 x 21 cm). Articles in English. [iv], 262 p., color and b/w ills. The articles of this volume offer a rich diversity of perspectives on philanthropy as practiced in Anatolia over some 2500 years. From such an extensive set of investigations, one would expect to compose a coherent synthetic statement on the nature of Anatolian philanthropy as well as some proposals for how to develop further a meaningful program of research on the topic. It turns out that the latter is far easier than the former; although this volume contains twenty original studies, they do not ultimately clarify either the definition of philanthropy or any essential aspect of Anatolia. The reflections below address first what might be called "the problem with philanthropy" and "the ambiguity of Anatolia." Once these waters are sufficiently muddied, it nonetheless emerges that a program of research on the topic is possible and even promising. Biography of a refugee academician.= Mülteci bir akademisyenin biyografisi. Clemens Emin Bosch, (1899-1955). Clemens Emin Bosch was a German scholar who began his academic career in the field of ancient history in Germany and left his country for Istanbul because of his wife's Jewish heritage at a period which he might have been very productive as an academician. When he was in Istanbul he apparently converted to Islam and took the Turkish name Emin. Clemens Emin Bosch, who lived approximately twenty years in Istanbul and died there, is widely known for his studies in the field of ancient numismatics. He joined the Side excavations (in Pamphylia) which began in 1946 and studied and produced publications on the inscriptions preserved in the Antalya Museum and on the inscriptions found during the Side excavations.‎

‎Balance weights in the Aegean world. Classical and Hellenistic periods. Translated from Turkish into English by Inci Türkoglu.‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. [x], 210 p., color ills. 300 copies were printed. Balance weights in the Aegean world. Classical and Hellenistic periods. Translated from Turkish into English Inci Türkoglu. Historically, balance weights are as old as the balances themselves. Actually, balance and weight examples of Mesopotamian, Egyptian and Hittite civilisations are known from wall paintings, reliefs, papyri and collections. However, the scope of this book is the balance weights produced and used in the Aegean world during the Classical and Hellenistic periods. Balance weights were among the instruments of public sphere (instrumenta publica) of antiquity and they constitute an important group of antiquities worth studying for their unit marks, symbols, depictions, inscriptions and ornaments. However, balance weights have been among the most neglected artefacts within archaeological research. Certainly, this work at handbook level should not be expected to fill the gap entirely, but rather call attention to this field. The examples were chosen from the city-states in the Aegean world and cover only those which bear ethnic or symbol (parasemon). CONTENTS: FOREWORD. INTRODUCTION. Scope, material, and sources. History of research in the light of basic publications. 1. AN OVERVIEW OF WEIGHTS: Form, material, and manufacture. Symbols (parasema) and other depictions. Denominations. Ethnic. ‎The Anzaf fortresses and the gods of Urartu. Translation by Geoffrey D. Summers, Ayça Uzel.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (28 x 20 cm). In English. 126 p. (32 color plts.), 1 folding plate. The fascinating pictorial scenes on pieces of a bronze shield from a room on the west side of the Haldi Temple in the Upper Anzaf Fortress, discovered in 1995, add greatly to our knowledge of Urartian religion and art. During the fire caused by a Scyhtian attack in the late seventh century B.C. objects and weapons of bronze and iron stored in this small room became molten and distorted, a large portion turning to slag. In recent years conservation of this mass of molten metal, weighing more than 13 kilograms, a number of bronze and iron objects and weapons have been recovered and preserved for the benefit of science. In particular, seven votive rings of cast bronze with cuneiform inscriptions from the co-regency of King Ispuini, Menua and Inuspua has added much to the poorly known political history in the early period of the Urartian Kingdom. Most of the fragments of bronze sheet bearing pictorial scenes come, it has been realized from the same large shield. Conservation of the bronzes is still continuing. Conservation a 78 cm. long piece of the shield over the last three years has, however, revealed scenes of great interest that shed significant new light on our understanding of the art and, particularly, the religion of Urartu. A row of 12 gods are depicted in the same sequence as the pantheon of gods in the Meher Kapi rock inscription which provides much detailed information on the religion of Urartu. Nothing similar to the pantheon in the Meher Kapi inscription, where each god is gven his divine attributes and local characteristics, has previously been found. In its 20 anniversary Arkeoloji ve Sanat is pleased to share with its readers this valuable study which, we believe, makes an important new addition to Anatolian archaeology.‎

A study on Knidos or Cnidus is an ancient settlement located in south-western Asia Minor, modern-day Turkey. It was an ancient Greek city of Caria, part of the Dorian Hexapolis. It was situated on the Datça peninsula, which forms the southern side of the Sinus Ceramicus, now known as Gulf of Gökova. By the 4th century BC, Knidos was located at the site of modern Tekir, opposite Triopion Island. But earlier, it was probably at the site of modern Datça (at the half-way point of the peninsula).‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (22 x 14 cm). In German. 204 p., color and b/w ills.

‎The city of Artemis with "White Eyebrows": Magnesia on the Meander. Magnesia ad Maeandrum. An archaeological guide. Translation: Jonathan Ross, Ayse Çalik Ross.‎

‎New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (22 x 12 cm). In English. 204 p. "To those who enquire how long the excavations at Magnesia are expected to continue O. Bingöl is in the habit of replying, "I have drawn up plans for the next 400 years but beyond that I haven't considered yet!" He does this to make it clear to everyone that the kind of work that will confront archaeologists at a site like Magnesia will never end and to emphasize the difficulties and problems he encounters in trying to carry out his plans. In this guide, we present the information about earlier researches on thesite as well as the results of Bingöl's first 23 years of excavations, the first phase of a very long program. Our aim is to present a clear picture of how different historical periods can be examined comprehensively in Magnesia, which was protected under the natural covering and thus not obliterated by the remains of more recent periods and cultures.". Prof. Dr. Orhan Bingöl, Director of Magnesia Excavations.‎
