1874. Albumin Prints ca. 145 x 129 cm 15 x 106 cm und 145 x 113 cm auf Kartontafeln montiert. Mit Beschriftung in deutscher Sprache. Eine Aufnahme ist etwas gebleicht die anderen sind in gutem Zustand und von guter Qualität. Die Photos wurden während des Aufenthalts der Korvette Gazelle 1874 in Monrovia gemacht. Sie zeigen Mitglieder der Expedition. Kommandant von Schleinitz führte die Korvette Gazelle 1874 bis 1876 auf einer Weltreise mit wissenschaftlichem Auftrag. Auf den Kerguelen-Inseln verbrachte die Expedition längere Zeit um den Venustransit zu beobachten. Mitte 1875 ging es weiter nach Neu Guinea. Viele Wissenschaftler forschten in den Bereichen Zoologie Botanik Geologie Meteorologie und Meeresforschung während Schleinitz selbst ethnologisches Material sammelte. Er benannte die Halbinsel nach seinem Schiff der Gazelle. Melanesien wurde erfirscht während auf der Rückfahrt Fiji Tonga und Samoa besucht wurden. Die Ergebnisse der Expedition wurden in einem fünfbändigen Werk publiziert. unknown

Missing volumes 4 5 and atlas. lx 434pp; xv 476pp; xv 438pp. Brown cloth hardcovers with blind stamped designs and borders on covers and gilt stamped vignettes on front boards. Gilt stamped titles on spines. Untrimmed foredge and bottom edge. Yellow end sheets. Volumes are illustrated with frontispiece steel engraved portrait of the author volume 1 several steel engravings and wood-cuts in text map in volume 1 and 3 maps in volume 2. A list of illustrations is included in the front of each volume. Light edge wear and some small spots to cloth bindings. Frontispiece volume 1 tissue guard and front end sheet are loose. In volume 3 one of the engravings is loose chipped and brown spotted on the edge. Occasional brown spots and light soil to the contents of 3 volumes. Internally a good or better set. Volume 2 is inscribed by the author to "Jos. H. Bradley" on the half title page. The first printing of these narratives published in 1844 by Sherman for Congress consisted of 100 quarto sets. The second printing of 150 sets called the Unofficial edition is also quarto size and has the imprint of "C. Sherman Printer/ 19 St. James Street Philadelphia" on the versos of the title pages. This partial set for sale is the first trade edition third printing of which 1000 copies were published by Lea and Blanchard. According to Howes these narratives are "The first United States scientific expedition by sea. An important letter for book historians those interested in the early history of the Library of Congress and particularly those enamored of the Wilkes Expedition. Here A.R. Spofford legendary Librarian of Congress from 1864 to 1897 who transformed the library from a quiet reference outlet into a national institution that served the American public details the specifics regarding the printing of the Wilkes expedition narrative by the United States government. Spofford begins by referring to the Wilkes narrative as "By far the most costly and expensive publication ever undertaken by the Government." He continues: "This vast undertaking though strictly limited to an edition of 100 copies & never completed cost the Government from first to last $242460.55. This enormous sum was of course exclusive of any expenses of the Expedition itself & covered 1st The labor of many scientific experts in various fields - 2d The finest engravings which the art of the day could supply - 3d The choicest paper of heavy satin finish - 4th The handpress work of the best printers - 5th Binding in the heaviest & most durable of turkey morocco full gilt." Spofford then proceeds to detail how many volumes were printed how many atlases up to 1861 and then breaks down the distribution of the completed sets including the knowledge that thirty-four sets went to foreign governments. A fascinating source of information on the original printing and distribution of an important American expedition. unknown
