4to (180 x 236 mm). Arabic manuscript on polished oriental paper. 546 ff. (foliated in a somewhat later hand), 23 lines per extensum, written in black naskh, with chapter headings and emphases in red. Contemporary blindstamped full calf, restored and spine rebacked. Rare, complete late 16th century Arabic manuscript of the "Anwar al-Tanzil wa-Asrar al-Ta'wil" ("The Lights of Revelation and the Secrets of Interpretation"), better known as "Tafsir al-Baydawi". One of the most popular classical Sunni Qur'anic interpretational works (tafsir), it was composed by the 13th-century Muslim scholar al-Baydawi (d. 1319?), who flourished in Persia. The "Tafsir al-Baydawi" is considered to contain the most concise analysis of the Qur'anic use of Arabic grammar and style to date and was hailed early on by Muslims as the foremost demonstration of the Qur'an's essential and structural inimitability ("i'jaz ma'nawi wa-lughawi") in Sunni literature. Due to its fame and influence, the work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important and significant, and many commentaries have been written on Baydawi's work. According to the contemporary Islamic scholar Gibril Fouad Haddad, the work "became and remained for seven centuries the most studied of all tafsirs" and it is to be regarded as "the most important commentary on the Qur'an in the history of Islam". - Paper rather browned; some waterstaining to margins of the first 70-odd leaves and occasionally beyond. The first 130 pages are closely annotated in the margins by a near-contemporary owner with several additional annotated sheets (some folding) pasted in. Old waqf stamps to recto of first leaf. Fourth edition of this description of a journey through Palestine by the French painter and writer Bazelaire (1857-1926), first published in 1889. In April 1888 she boarded a ship with a group of pilgrims, which, after a stop in Civitavecchia, from where she visited Rome, dropped anchor in Haifa. Accompanied by her brother Maurice (1840-1909) and her sister Isabelle (1847-89) she departed on horseback to tour the country for a month. Her emotional account describes the places they visited, including Mount Carmel, Nazareth, Tibériade, Jerusalem ("Am I really in Jerusalem, or is it but a dream about to fade away?", p. 129), Mount Olivet, Jericho, the Dead Sea, Bethlehem, Hebron, and the Valley of Josaphat. Among other adventures, a night spent locked in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre near Jesus's empty tomb inspired a particular sense of awe: "It is a night as long as a century, and as short as all joys in the world! [...] All those who have seen Jerusalem know and understand these things, I invoke all pilgrims!" (pp. 253f.). - The initials and illustrations accompanying the text were created by Bazelaire herself. The plans show the old and new towns of Jerusalem. - Extremities insignificantly rubbed; small flaw to spine. Paper somewhat browned and brownstained throughout. Early, uncommonly well-preserved album of photographs showing the monuments of Egypt. Having arrived in Egypt as early as 1859, Antonio Beato (1835-1906) was among the first commercial photographers to make their way to the Middle East in order to capitalise on the increasing demand for souvenir photographs. Beato's images of Egypt were distinctly different from those of other photographers working in the region (cf. Hannavy). - Binding a little rubbed. The resulting images were exhibited in London in July 1862 [...] Selections from Bedford's Middle Eastern views were included in [...] The Holy Land, Egypt, Constantinople, Athens etc" (Hannavy). The Changing of Conception of Time: Calendar and Clock from the Ottoman Empire to Republic of Turkey
<p>This thesis explores the changing conception of time and the time measurable tools and its symbologies from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic of Turkey. My aim is. to describe the Ottoman and Republican experiences on the issue of time and compare these with the European experience. In the Ottoman Empire from the fifteenth century on the calendars were prepared by the palace milneccims or astronomers. The Hicri calendar was used at the officially level until the end of the Empire; however at end of the eighteenth century the Rumi calendar was introduced as the Hicri calendar was not connected to the seasons. Apart from this the hour system was used ezani alaturka until the modernization period; then the hour system began to change. These alterations caused some dichotomies in "social life. In the Republican period time was adapted to the Western standards. The modernization and secularization of time in the Ottoman era resembled that of Europe in its early modernization phase. The constituting of the time symbologies and the time disciplines differed according to societies. It was realized that time could aid in the secularization and modernization of society by the power. From this point of view this paper seeks to establish methodological roots for the conception of time and its effects of secularization and modernization. </p> Boğaziçi University paperback

First edition thus: a French translation of the author's essay on the Hajj first published in Arabic in the "Roznémé Tounsié" (Annuaire Tunisien). The folding map at the back of the volume shows the route of the Hejaz railway, its course completed only as far as Tabouk at the time of publication, while the remainder of the line is shown in its projected state, still planned to run as far as Mecca. Indeed, when the rails reached Al-'Ula station very soon after this book came out, local tribes protested against the railroad, fearing it threatened their livelihood as providers of transport camels. Afterwards, Sultan Abdulhamid ruled that the railway would only run as far as Medina, where the line was completed on 1 September 1908. - M'hamed Bel-Khodja (1869-1943) was born into an Ottoman and Tunisian religious dynasty that was among the most important in the country in the 19th century. In 1902 he became director of the government press; in 1919 he was appointed qaid governor of Gabès and Bizerte, remaining an influential government adviser even after retirement. - A few tiny edge chips to covers, but generally very well preserved. Christopher de Bellaigue journalist for the Economist in 2001 and based in Istanbul wrote a piece about the history of Turkey for the New York Review of Books and briefly mentioned the killing and deportation of half a million Armenians in 1915 and suggested it was best understood as a part of the struggles that were part of the end of the Ottoman empire. He had left Turkey for another assignment when he was besieged with letters about that article that led him to go back to Turkey and see if he got it all wrong--about that massacre. There he found the 'official version' of the event but went on to try to discover what really happened. Here is what he found in a place in which the centuries old conflict among Turks Armenians and Kurds was still very much alive and bringing to life the basic conflicts in the Middle East: between statehood and religion; imperial borders and ethnicity. Borgia (1731-1804) was appointed secretary of the Propaganda Fide in 1770, the year they published the present third Arabic edition of the catechism. He added the instructions, apparently intending them to be bound with the catechism. - Text entirely in Arabic except for title-page and colophon. Old Bourges library stamp "Ex bibliotheca Majoris Seminarii Bituricensis". Wrappers slightly stained; interior very well preserved. A major product of the Propaganda Fide's efforts to convert Arabic-speaking people in the 18th century, including the rare instructions for confession and communion. Very rare translation of Bellarmino's "Dottrina Cristiana breve" (the abridgement of his abridged catechism) into Syriac, translated by Ya'kubh Binyamin. With the exception of the imprint, the text surrounding the printer's device on title page, and the imprimatur on the t. p. verso, which are in Latin, the text is entirely in Syriac printed in the Estrangelo alphabet. In 1613, the Arabic version of Bellarmino's "Doctrina Christiana" had inaugurated the famous Typographia Savariana as their first book printed with Arabic types. - Only 4 copies listed by OCLC. Contemporary blindstamped brown full calf with ornamental central and cornerpiece decorations. Marbled endpapers. The first book ever printed with the fine Arabic types of the Roman Typographia Savariana: the first Arabic edition of Robert Bellarmino's catechism, an abridgment of his "Dichiarazione piu copiosa della dottrina christiana" (1598). Translated by the Maronites Vittorio Scialac (d. 1635) and Gabriel Sionita (1577-1648). "Les traducteurs disent qu'ils ont ponctué l'arabe, changé et ajouté quelque chose au texte primitif de Bellarmin, mais avec son consentement. Ce volume rare est le premier publié avec les beaux charactères arabes de Savary" (de Backer/S.). The present copy does not contain the Latin text at all, hence it has only 88 unnumbered pages of text instead of the 171 numbered pages usually cited. This catechism and the Arabic-Latin Psalter produced the following year would remain the only works to leave the Typographia Savariana; the types have survived and are now in the archives of the Imprimerie Nationale in Paris. - Stains and traces of moisture. Old shelfmark labels to spine, cover and final flyleaf; bookplate of the Dutch Jesuit Seminary on final pastedown. Contemp. ms. notes to endpaper. Contemporary vellum with giltstamped spine title. All edges sprinkled in red. Later edition of the famous Arabic version of Robert Bellarmino's catechism (an abridgment of his 1598 "Dichiarazione piu copiosa della dottrina christiana"), translated by the Maronites Vittorio Scialac (d. 1635) and Gabriel Sionita (1577-1648) and first published in 1613 by the Roman Typographia Savariana as their first book printed with Arabic types. The present edition is the first to include an Ethiopian version, making this the only Ethiopian version published (printed with the Arabic and Italian text in three columns). Finely engraved map of Mocha, Yemen, from Jacques Nicolas Bellin's "Le Petit Atlas Maritime Recueil de Cartes et Plans des Quatre Parlies du Monde en Cinq Volumes", first published in Paris in 1764. - Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-72) was among the most important mapmakers of the 18th century. In 1721, at age 18, he was appointed hydrographer (chief cartographer) to the French Navy. In August 1741, he became the first Ingénieur de la Marine of the Depot des cartes et plans de la Marine (the French Hydrographic Office) and was named Official Hydrographer of the French King. - During his term as Official Hydrographer, the Depot was the single most active center for the production of sea charts and maps, including a large folio format sea-chart of France, the Neptune Francois. He also produced a number of sea-atlases of the world, e.g., the Atlas Maritime and the Hydrographie Francaise. These gained fame, distinction, and respect all over Europe and were republished throughout the 18th and even in the succeeding century. - Bellin also came out with smaller format maps such as the 1764 Petit Atlas Maritime, containing 580 finely detailed charts. He also contributed many of the maps for Bellin and contributed a number of maps to the 15-volume Histoire Generale des Voyages of Antoine François Prévost, or simply known l'Abbe Prevost. - Bellin set a very high standard of workmanship and accuracy, thus gaining for France a leading role in European cartography and geography. Many of his maps were copied by other mapmakers of Europe.

With title in woodcut border with Cavellet's device and initials at the foot, each part-title with Cavellet's woodcut device, 1 folding woodcut map (315 x 350 mm) showing Mount Sinai, 44 woodcuts in the text (including a portrait of the author by Geoffroy Tory), and numerous fine decorated initials. Main text set in italic, with preface and commentary in roman. Overlapping vellum (ca. 1600?), sewn on 5 cords, laced through the joints. Third edition of Belon's "Observations", the fruit of his extensive travels in Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon and Syria from 1546 to 1549. The naturalist Pierre Belon (c. 1518-64), famous for his works on ornithology, was attached to the French embassy to the Ottoman Empire, led by Gabriel de Luetz (Luez, Luels) d'Aramont, who aimed at convincing Suleiman the Magnificent to join forces against Charles V. The envoy sailed for Venice in December 1546 and proceeded to Croatia. Here Luetz continued overland to Adrianople (Edirne), while Belon sailed for Istanbul by way of Greece, visiting Lemnos, Macedonia, Crete and Kavala en route. He reached Istanbul in August 1547, explored the city and continued to Alexandria, while Luetz accompanied Suleiman to Persia. Belon's journey continued to Cairo, Mount Sinai, Jerusalem, Damascus, Baalbek, Aleppo, and again to Turkey. - Unlike many contemporary travel writers, Belon does not elaborate on extraordinary adventures, but rather limits himself to detailed observations on mammals, fish, snakes, birds, plants and the manners and customs of the peoples he encountered, commenting only on what he himself had witnessed. The fine woodcuts, attributed to Arnold Nicolai and Pierre Goudet (Gourdelle), include a map of the Dardanelles (Hellespont), a folding map of Mount Sinai, a view of Alexandria, coins with Arabic inscriptions, 3 illustrations of Egyptian costumes, a giraffe, chameleon and, surprisingly, a flying dragon and an armadillo. - The first edition was published in 1553, illustrated with 35 woodcuts only, followed by a second, augmented edition in 1554. The present edition was a joint publication of Guillaume Cavellat and Gilles Corrozet, comprising two issues with either Corrozet's or Cavallet's name in the imprint. - With printed description from a sales catalogue on pastedown, slightly browned, some light waterstains, folding plate mounted. Unnumbered copy of a press-run of only 400, signed and inscribed by the author on the half-title: "à ma chère Marguerite Gorrée". - "In this country we use the term falconry in a somewhat wider sense than is the case in France, including thereby every kind of flight with a hawk, whatever may be its species. French falconers apply the term 'fauconnerie' only to flights with the longwinged hawks (Peregrine, Merlin, Hobby, and Jerfalcon), flights with the short-winged Goshawk (autour) and Sparrow-hawk (épervier) coming under the expressive and very convenient term 'autourserie'. To this branch of sport M. Belvallette has devoted an entire volume, albeit a small one, nicely printed, and illustrated with a dozen full-page plates and some pretty text cuts, which, if not always original (we recognise the work of both English and Japanese artists), are appropriate and fairly accurate. M. Belvallette is well known in France as a skilful falconer, and he writes with a thorough knowledge of his subject. On this account his little book commends itself at once as being thoroughly practical" (Harting). - Free endpapers noticeably browned, otherwise very good.
