‎L'Islam sous la cendre. Paris, (colophon: Frazier-Soye), (19 February) 1918.‎

‎Square 4to (250 × 260 mm). With the frontispiece in three states: a lithographed plate, a hand-coloured miniature painting on vellum, highlighted with gold, and an engraved plate; and with the half-title printed in blue and several words in the text printed in green and blue. Original green cloth. One of six copies (numbered 4) of a sumptuous publication of poems on Islam by the French poet, writer and publisher Maurice Heine (1884-1940). The entire edition consists of 77 copies, of which only the first six (numbered 1-6) were printed on dyed Japanese paper and included the frontispiece in three states, of which one painted and highlighted with gold on parchment. The frontispiece, an Arabic text surrounded by flowers, was designed and drawn by the Algerian miniature painter Mohammed Racim (1896-1975), founder of the Algerian school of miniature painting that still exists. The included poems are: La demeure harmonieuse; Dans la maison moresque; Palais d'Islam; Le voyage en faience; Le cyprès; Alger-aux-barbares; and La mort d'Alger. The work opens with a half-title printed in blue, followed by a blank leaf, a leaf with the privilege, another half-title, three frontispieces, the title-page, and a dedication, followed by the prologue and the seven poems. It closes with a colophon, mentioning the different copies of the book. Below the colophon is the print number: "Exemplaire no. 4. Imprimé pour le docteur Pierre Astruc". - With a presentation inscription to Pierre Astruc: "à Pierre Astruc, avec toute l'affection de ton ami dévoué, Maurice Heine". In very good condition. C. ‎Henderson Kathy Illustrated by Jane Ray‎

‎Lugalbanda: The Boy Who Got Caught Up in a War: An Epic Tale From Ancient Iraq‎

‎Cambridge MA: Candlewick Press 2006. First American edition. Hardback. Fine. Age Level: 8 and up Grade Level: 3 and up Series: Aesop Prize Awards Found in Iraq and older than the Bible the Koran or the Torah this stirring epic - the world's oldest written story - now becomes available to a general readership for the very first time. Lugalbanda woke with a jolt. He opened his eyes and what did he see but the terrible Anzu bird beating its wings in its nest high above. . . . Did he quake Did he quail No. Lugalbanda the Brave sat and stared and into his head came a brilliant idea. Before the Bible and the Koran before even the Greek and Roman myths there came a story from the land we now call Iraq. Speaking across five thousand years in a voice so fresh and timeless it could have been written yesterday this tale tells of an extraordinary journey of a magical bird of a battle that wouldn't end and of wisdom gained. It is the story of Lugalbanda a boy in a time of war. Etched on clay tablets in cuneiform lost underground for thousands of years and rediscovered just 150 years ago this account of the epic adventures of a loyal resourceful boy is renarrated in lyrical prose by Kathy Henderson and set against Jane Ray's glorious images glinting with gold. "Both timely and timeless Lugalbanda is the oldest-known written story predating even the epic of Gilgamesh who may be Lugalbanda's son. The cuneiform tablets on which this Sumerian legend was inscribed were discovered during 19th-century excavations but not deciphered until the 1970s. Henderson's vivid yet stately words and Ray's Sumerian-inspired watercolor ink and collage illustrations bring immediacy to this story of a boy caught up in wartime. Lugalbanda's courage native kindness and prescience contributed to his heroism. Grievously ill he is left behind in the wilderness while his brothers' army marches to war. Upon his recovery Lugalbanda tames the fearsome Anzu bird with its teeth of a shark and talons of an eagle and persuades the monster to grant him supernatural strength and speed. In return the prince promises that his people will venerate the Anzu bird in perpetuity. With the publication of this beautiful fascinating book modern readers can come to appreciate a compelling narrative from a civilization about which we are still learning." -- Miriam Lang Budin Chappaqua Public Library School Library Journal. ‎Muhamad. A shtudium fun dem ershaynen, leben und thetigkayt fun dem Musulmanishen gezets-geber un die rezultaten fun zayn religyon. New York, Hebrew Publishing Co., [early 1900s].‎

‎8vo. 64 pp. Contemporary half cloth. Very rare second edition of this Yiddish-language study of the Prophet Muhammad, essentially a reissue of the Meir Chinsky edition of 1898. It includes not only a biography of the Prophet and a discussion of the Qur'an and of Islam, but also chapters with a specifically Jewish perspective, such as on the Jewish population of Arabia (especially in Mecca and Medina), on Muhammad's "dreadful revenge on the Jews", etc. The author published similar accounts on Jesus of Nazareth ("Yeyshu Hanoytsri: zayn ersheynen, leben und toydt: algemeyner iberblik vegen der entshtehung fun kristenthum") and Sabbatai Zevi ("Der Terkisher Meshieh: a historish romantishe shilderung iber dem leben und virken fun Shabtay Tsvi"). The highly versatile journalist, novelist, and playwright D. M. Hermalin (1865-1921) was born and educated in Bucharest, where he worked for various newspapers before being compelled to leave Romania and emigrating to the United States at the age of twenty. Here, he taught French and Hebrew and achieved distinction as a much-admired family page editor for Yiddish newspapers such as the "Folks Advokat", the "Yiddisher Herold", and the "Wahrheit". He wrote thrillers, but also translated Tolstoy, Maupassant, Zola, Bocaccio, and Shakespeare into Yiddish; his 1901 translation of Goethe's "Faust" was the first complete Yiddish version. - Stamps of ownership of the Jewish Socialist Branch of Chelsea as well as the Chelsea Labor Lyceum Association Library to lower pastedown and several pages, including the title-page. Shelfmarks to front pastedown and title-page. Extremities slightly rubbed, paper browned and brittle. - No copy in trade records; online library catalogues list copies at the British Library, Brandeis University Library (Waltham, MA), Yivo Institute for Jewish Research (New York), and the Hebrew Union College (Cincinnati). ‎Hermalin, D[avid] M[oyshe].‎

‎Muhamad. A shtudium fun dem ershaynen, leben und thetigkayt fun dem Musulmanishen gezets-geber un die rezultaten fun zayn religyon. New York, M[eir] Chinsky, 19 Ludlow Street, (1898).‎

‎8vo. 64 pp. Contemporary marbled boards with title clipped from the original upper wrapper and pasted on the upper cover; lower wrapper cover bound within. Cloth spine. First edition of this Yiddish-language study of the Prophet Muhammad. Includes not only a biography of the Prophet and a discussion of the Qur'an and of Islam, but also chapters with a specifically Jewish perspective, such as on the Jewish population of Arabia (especially in Mecca and Medina), on Muhammad's "dreadful revenge on the Jews", etc. - Binding severely rubbed; extremeties bumped. Paper browned and brittle with noticeable fingerstaining. The lower wrapper cover, preserved inside the boards, has an English title: "Mohammed. A Study Of the Advent, Life and Activity of the Mussulman Law-Giver and the Results of his Religion", with the publisher's advert of books on sale ("oysferkoyf katalog fun mayn aygenem ferlag") on the reverse. Extremely rare: no copy in trade records; online library catalogues list copies at YIVO, Yale, Harvard, University of California, and Florida Atlantic University, as well as the British Library; several research libraries in the US hold microform copies. OCLC 122740986.‎

‎Hermann, Paul.‎

‎Paradisus Batavus continens plus centum plantas affabrè aere incisas & descriptionibus illustratas. Amsterdam, Abraham Elzevier, 1698.‎

‎4to. (16), 247, (1), 15, (1) pp. With 111 etched plates depicting plants, an elaborate woodcut tailpiece with an eagle feeding her young, caterpillars, dogs, and flowers, as well as a woodcut printer's vignette on the title-page. Early 18th century (?) richly gold-tooled mottled calf, in a panel design with a large centre-piece of curlicues, gold-tooled board edges, marbled end papers and gilt edges. First edition of an overview of exotic plants were recently discovered by the Dutch. The foreign plants were brought back to the Netherlands by ship from around the world and planted in various botanical gardens to be studied. With the help of new botanical technology such as greenhouses it became possible for the first time to cultivate exotic plants such as orchids in the colder European climates. Paul Hermann (1646-95) had excellent contacts and based his work on various Dutch botanical collections that held plants from the Americas, from Africa (Egypt), the South Indian Ocean regions, and Asia. Mentioned plants include passion fruit, cacti, and papaver. Hermann himself served as director of the Hortus Botanicus at the University of Leiden and contributed to this work specimens from India, Africa, and Sri Lanka. He died in 1695 while at work on a number of important publications, this one of them. His widow was able to complete the "Paradisus Batavus" and got influential English botanist William Sherard (1659-1728) to edit her husband's work. The publication raised the bar for floral publications and set the standard so high that it inspired Linnaeus to write his "Flora Zeylanica" (about the plants of Sri Lanka). - Some copies include a four-page laudatory poem to the author, not present here. Most copies of this first edition have 110 plates, while the present volume contains 111. Some of the depicted plants are the first ever to be documented in European cultivation. Although the plates are referred to as engravings it appears more likely that they are etchings. The anonymous illustrations seem to be aimed at showing the whole plant, including the roots, leaves and twigs, rather than just the blossom or fruit that the plant produces. The woodcut tailpiece is signed "C" (possibly Nagler Monogrammisten 2151). - Boards slightly warped, but still a very good copy. From the library of William Cavendish-Bentinck, the 6th Duke of Portland, with his engraved armorial bookplate on the upper pastedown. Kuijlen 115. Nissen BBI 860. The Anglo-Dutch Garden 143.‎

‎Herring, John Frederick, Sr.‎

‎Portraits of the Winning Horses of the Great St. Leger Stakes. From the year 1815 to the present year inclusive. London, L. Harrison for S. and J. Fuller, 1829.‎

‎Large folio (60 x 42 cm). Letterpress title with engraved vignette, list of subscribers, winners of the St. Leger 1776-1814, 14 hand-coloured aquatint plates by T. Sutherland and R. G. Reeve after Herring, each with letterpress description of riders and winners of other races and the St Leger stakes for each year. Bound in recent half burgundy morocco with contemporary drab boards with large printed label on upper cover. "Extremely rare" (Tooley). Second edition of Herring's finest work, the outcome of his fascination with horse racing and the St. Leger in particular. "In the writer's estimation, the first series of the St. Leger winners contains the very best of Herring prints [...] they were engraved by Sutherland, a more competent aquatinter and colourist than his successors who handled these race-horses" (Siltzer). Herring spent the first 18 years of his life in London, where his father, an American, was a fringe-maker in Newgate Street. Having married against his father's wishes, he went to Doncaster, where he arrived during the races in September 1814, and saw the Duke of Hamilton's horse, William, win the St. Leger. The sight inspired him to attempt the art of animal-painting, in which he subsequently excelled. He painted Filho da Puta, the winner of the St. Leger in 1815, and for the following thirty-two years painted each winner in succession. "Herring's series of Portraits [...] were painted annually and quickly reproduced in large showy aquatints, the horses made literally glossy by the application of varnish to the paper" (Diana Donald, Picturing Animals in Britain 1750-1850, New Haven, CT [2007], p. 215). This is the second edition of this series of wonderful racehorse portraits. It was first published as a suite of 10 plates in 1824 by Sheardown and Son of Doncaster; S. and J. Fuller of London purchased these in 1827 and continued to publish, periodically, the St. Leger winner series up to 1845. The earlier plates were all re-captioned with Fuller's imprint. Plates watermarked 1825-28; the first plate in the present work, "Filho da Puta", is on paper watermarked 1827. - Very slight offsetting to text. Extremities rubbed; otherwise a superb example of this rare work. Siltzer 139-146. Mellon Horsemanship, 128.‎

‎Hervás, Lorenzo, SJ.‎

‎Aritmetica delle nazioni e divisione del tempo fra l'orientali. Cesena, Gregorio Biasini, 1786.‎

‎Large 4to. 201, (1) pp. (including errata). With a folding engraved plate and a folding letterpress table. Contemporary carta rustica binding. First edition thus. A highly interesting work comparing the different numerical systems used by various languages and cultures: Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, North and South American Indian cultures, Chinese, Japanese, Tamil, Coptic, Maori, etc. Separate chapters investigate the European adoption of the Arabic system of numerals. The engraved plate shows the shape of numerals throughout the world, while the folding table compares the pronunciation of the word for the number "6" in a wealth of languages. - The Spanish-born Jesuit Lorenzo Hervás y Panduro (1735-1809) counts as one of the most important authors of the Spanish Universalist School of the 18th century, an enlightened, global, comparative approach to historic and scientific theory. This work also appeared as volume 19 of the author's monumental 21-volume cosmographical treatise "Idea dell' Universo" (1778-87), being one of five volumes of the series to be issued separately. - Front inner hinge loosened. Untrimmed in the original carta rustica. An early and little-received work of comparative linguistics, pre-dating by many decades the works of Bopp and Schleicher. De Backer/S. IV, 319f., 2.XIX. ‎Folio (422 x 522 mm). (8), 34 pp., 20 tables (3 double-sided, 1 coloured) and 9 illustrations within the text. Leaves and plates stored loosely in original decorated dark green cloth portfolio. First edition of this fundamental work on the Sultan Hassan mosque in Cairo, built in 1356/59 during the Mamluk era. ‎Heude, William.‎

‎Voyage de la côte de Malabar à Constantinople, par le Golfe Persique, l'Arabie, la Mésopotamie, le Kordistan et la Turquie d'Asie fait en 1817. Paris, Gide fils, 1820.‎

‎8vo. 358 pp. With 6 hand-coloured engraved plates and a folding engraved map. Contemporary marbled full calf with giltstamped label to gilt spine. Leading edges gilt; marbled edges. First French edition of this uncommon travelogue, containing a valuable account of the Arabian Gulf including the present-day Emirates, Oman etc. The book discusses at some length the "pirates Joasmis de Rass-al-Kymer" (the Al-Qasimi family of Ras al-Khaimah) and the British raid of 1809, but also the Wahhabis, pearl fishing in Bahrein, and "Fata Morgana"-type mirages in the desert. "An interesting work, rich in topographical observations. Heude's journey took him to Muscat, Ormuz, Baghdad, Bahrein and Nineveh" (Atabey). "The author of this rare and interesting work was attached to the Madras Military Establishment and was apparently related to Earl Fitzwilliam, to whom the work is dedicated. Heude left Bombay in 1816 and arrived in Constantinople the following year. There are descriptions of Arabia, Baghdad and Armenia and of a hazardous journey through the mountains of Kurdistan" (Blackmer). As is typical for British Romantic travel writing, Heude appreciatively describes Bedu life and the various religious sects he encounters. - The plates show local costumes, including those of the Bedouin Arabs and of a Dervish of Basra. The large map shows the Middle East from the Dardanelles and Asia Minor to Kuwait and Bushehr. Light brownstaining near beginning and end with more noticeable gluestaining to endpapers. A prettily preserved volume. Atabey 576. Blackmer 812. Chadenat 1622. Weber I, 85. Gay 3576 ("2 vol." in error). Not in Cox, Henze, or Howgego.‎

‎Heynes, Edward.‎

‎Folio (254 x 400 mm). (1) f., 14 cols., (1) p. (= 5 ff. in all). Modern blue-grey paper covers. First Dutch edition. Edward Heynes' account of the first successful attempt of the British (the third altogether) at establishing trading privileges with Mocha and a commercial presence there, previously published in English within the first volume of Samuel Purchas' collection "Hakluytus Posthumus, or Purchas his Pilgrimes" (1625). - The ship "Anne Royall", captained by Andrew Shilling, sailed in April 1618 up the Red Sea and visited Mocha from April 11 till August 20. Heynes, secretary to Sir Thomas Roe, gives an extensive account of the reception by the governor of Mocha, customs of the population, and prospects of commerce. "[The] British delegation lands, and presents the governor with six yards of broadcloth stammell, six yards of green material, a shotgun and mirror. It is striking that the British respond to their hosts' food gifts with gifts of technology. This form of reciprocity sends a message of power, for not only does it reflect the greater sophistication of their economy, it also implies that the Yemenites are no match militarily" (Malkiel, p. 10). Includes a short account of a trip made by Heynes' fellow-merchant Joseph Salbank to Sinan. - Published as part 18 of the series "Wijd-beroemde Voyagien na Oost- en West-Indiën, gedaan door de Engelschen", with a detailed index. Slight foxing throughout, but on the whole well preserved. Tiele 8. Cf. David Malkiel, Strangers in Yemen (Berlin/Boston 2021), p. 9-11. Not in Henze, Howgego, Cox etc.‎
