Schrift genoemt zyn worden aangewezen. Heilige geographie of aardrijkskundige beschryving van het Joodsche land etc. etc. ORIGINAL 18th CENTURY COPPERPLATE MAP OF THE HOLY LAND.‎

‎Utrecht Paddenburg 1757. Original single-sheet map in copperplate engraving of fine quality. Overall size ca. 400 x 510 mm. Plate mark ca. 365 x 445 mm. Image size ca. 340 x 420 mm. Engraved illustration at lower right corner. Handsome illustrated cartouche encloses engraved title and colophon. Scale within illustrated frame. Fine strong impression on heavy handmade paper with ample margins all round. First original state unaltered by later colouration. Preserved flat in acid-free pH-balanced buffered archival paper. In fine condition. A touch of browning to centrefold. ~ First edition. Willem Albert Bachiene 1712-1783 Dutch clergyman later a professor of geography and astronomy at the Illustere School Maastricht. Well known cartographer. The 3-volume "Heilige geographie of aardrijkskundige beschryving van het Joodsche land alsmede andere landen in de H. Schrift voorkomende" is considered among his most important works. It was published in Utrecht between 1763-1768 and included a suite of 12 fine geographical maps of the Holy Land and its neighbouring lands which Bachiene made during a period of ten years the first in as early as 1758. The map offered herewith is taken from this suite. Other important cartographic works of the Holy Land by Bachiene were included in the so-called "Jehovah Bible" i.e. "De Gansche H. Schrift Vervattende alle de regelmatige Boeken des Ouden en Nieuwen Testaments . Gods Gedenk-Naam Jehovah onvertaald gehouden" published in 1762 by N. Goetzee of Gorinchem shortly before the present map first appeared in book form. Whereas other single-sheet maps by Bachiene are in relative abundance the works from "Heilige geographie of aardrijkskundige beschryving van het Joodsche land" are very scarce seldom found in any state practically unavailable in their original uncoloured state. Hardcover bound in the original decorated blue pebble-grain cloth gilt ornament and lettering stamped within triple-rule gilt border spine illustrated in gilt all edges gilt crack to inner hinge some wear to spine ends front flyleaf incised. In a very good condition. Nice copy of a charming book with a lovely set of plates. ~ First edition. The chief interest of many of the events recorded in the Bible gathers round its rivers and lakes and this book attempts to link the explanation of the Scripture with the description of the scenes which are visited. It draws on many sources namely Robinson's "Researches in Palestine" Lynch's "Narrative of the American Exploring Expedition to the Jordan and the Dead Sea" Stanley's "Sinai and Palestine" and several others. Of particular value are the charming plates a set of delicate pen-and-ink lithographs known as "Nelson Prints". The image of each plate is first printed from a lithograph stone in a purplish ink. The plate is then coloured in pale blue and fawn from separate relief wood blocks. Not in Tobler who refers 225 only to Tweedie's earlier work "Jerusalem and its Environs" 1860. London, T. Plus three folding lithographed maps one of which is coloured each as frontispiece to each book; two lithographed plans bound in Book III. Hardcover bound in the original publisher's ochre cloth lettered in black illustration stamped in gilt on cover. In a very fine condition. Excellent copy of a lovely book. ~ First edition. Three books in one volume published 1889 1895 1890 respectively. Provenance: Noted classicist Dr. Henriëtte Boas' copy with her bookplate. Schumacher was the first explorer to survey the regions described here and his minute and thorough scientific observations notes maps drawings and sketches were prepared for publication at the request of the Palestine Exploration Fund by his friend the explorer Guy le Strange. They were published here for the first time. Gottlieb Schumacher 1857 settled at a very young age with his family in Haifa where his father a member of the "Temple Association" designed most of the buildings of the German Colony. Following the completion of his engineering studies in Stuttgart he returned to Haifa and was appointed Chief Engineer for the Province of Akko. He designed many buildings and was a leading figure in civil engineering. One of his most important projects was the survey of the Golan Hauran and the Ajlun districts in preparation for the construction of the Damascus-Haifa railway. In the course of this survey he produced the first accurate maps of these regions along with detailed descriptions of the archaeological remains and the present villages. He published many other reports and books on his discoveries supported by the Palestine Exploration Fund. With the outbreak of World War I the Templar community left for Germany. Schumacher returned in 1924 to his home on the Carmel where he died a year later. Although he was born in Ohio U.S.A. Gottlieb was brought-up and educated as a German. "I beg to through myself on the indulgence of my readers for the defects of style" he once wrote "for my work has been perforce written in a language which though familiar to me is not my own."
