A remarkably detailed work encompassing not only a travellers' guide but a source book on Palestine and the Holy Land which in the author's words is intended to give "ein Bild von Land und Leuten Geschichte und Kultur Wirtschaft und Forschung" and hoped "dürfte jedem Palästina-reisenden ein wilkommener Freund und Führer sein." Jesaias a resident of Jerusalem provides a wealth of information meticulously detailed. He scans the land north- and southwards paying special attention to the major cities of Haifa Tel-Aviv Jaffa and Jerusalem and continues to Trans-Jordan and Syria. In the appendices he gives a full list of all Jewish villages in Palestine with related information that could be gathered from the sources available at the time a glossary of Hebrew words and a concordance of Biblical places mentioned in the guide. Engraved illustration depicting Joshua's men about to embark on the entry into the Promised Land. Illustrated cartouche encloses engraved title and colophon. Fine strong impression on heavy handmade paper with ample margins all round. First original state unaltered by later colouration. Preserved flat in acid-free pH-balanced buffered archival paper. In a very fine condition. - - First edition. Willem Albert Bachiene 1712-1783 Dutch clergyman later a professor of geography and astronomy at the Illustere School Maastricht. Well known cartographer. The 3-volume "Heilige geographie of aardrijkskundige beschryving van het Joodsche land alsmede andere landen in de H. Schrift voorkomende" is considered among his most important works. It was published in Utrecht between 1763-1768 and included a suite of 12 fine geographical maps of the Holy Land and its neighbouring lands which Bachiene made during a period of ten years the first in as early as 1758. The map offered herewith is taken from this suite. Other important cartographic works of the Holy Land by Bachiene were included in the so-called "Jehovah Bible" i.e. "De Gansche H. Schrift Vervattende alle de regelmatige Boeken des Ouden en Nieuwen Testaments . Gods Gedenk-Naam Jehovah onvertaald gehouden" published in 1762 by N. Goetzee of Gorinchem shortly before the present map first appeared in book form. Whereas other single-sheet maps by Bachiene are in relative abundance the works from "Heilige geographie of aardrijkskundige beschryving van het Joodsche land" are very scarce seldom found in any state practically unavailable in their original uncoloured state. In 1872 the son Heinrich Wagner took over moved the presses to Leipzig and established his own publishing firm in collaboration with Ernst Debes. With numerous heliogravures of fine quality many full-page printed in lightly-tinted ink to the text. Printed on thick paper throughout. Original card wrappers with integral pictorial dust-jacket bit chipped and soiled. Book itself is in a very good condition. ~ A numbered copy of the first limited edition. A magnificent visual tour and a celebration of fine early photography in Palestine. The fine technique of gravure printing Kupfertiefdruck Rakeltiefdruck developed by Karl Klic 1841-1927 is often referred to erratically as photogravure or heliogravure terms which describe another process. Experiments in gravure printing began in the 1850s and reproductions of rare prints by this method became common from the 1870s. It was not however until around 1880 that the development of this most brilliant and faithful monochrome reproductive technique yet known in the history of printing began. Klic adapted the cross-line screen to the old hand photogravure process but kept it secret rather than patenting it and the technique was reinvented by others in the years afterwards. Photographic dustwrapper again by Alfred Bernheim with white and tan coloured coloured titles to the front panel and black and blue coloured titles to the back strip. Translated by Judith Landry. Very minor bumping to the head and to the heel of the spine. A few fading spots on the top part of the book panels. The major damage has been water damage to the top one third of the back strip on either side of the back strip � please see photograph. Staining to the top right hand corner of the pages � to page 18. Some rubbing and chipping to the dustwrapper corners top worse than bottom. There a small tear to both the top and bottom rear dustwrapper edges. Dustwrapper is slightly some faded as well. There is creasing to the bottom corner of the front fold over. Again the major damage has been water damage to the back strip and either side of the back strip to the verso of the dustwrapper � please see photograph. Size: 4to 9�" - 12" tall. 122 pages. .
