First and only edition: a substantial torso of the League of Nations Treaty Series (LNTS), the League's officially published collection of treaties and other international engagements. Begun in 1920, it was discontinued in 1946 (following the dissolution of the League) after 205 volumes. The present set includes numerous important agreements reached during the interwar period between the western powers and those of the Middle East, such as Saudi Arabia, the Trucial States, Yemen, and Oman. - To cite but a few examples, vol. 71 includes the full Arabic and English text of the "Treaty of Friendship and good understanding between his Britannic Majesty and his Majesty the King of Hejaz and of Nejd and its dependencies. Signed at Jeddah, May 20, 1927", authorized by Faisal Abdul-Aziz al Saud, Abdul-Aziz ibn Abdul-Rahman al Saud and Gilbert Clayton, pp. 133-164, also noting: "Article 6. Numerous further relevant treaties are referenced in the copious indices included with the series. - Three sets of indices bound in separate volumes, the others bound with the treaties. Some of the original wrappers somewhat damaged when not included in the binding, but well preserved. "Le Chevalier had assisted Choiseul-Gouffier in his 'Voyage pittoresque de la Grèce', and was then sent to Jassy to observe Russian troop movements. His work is an account of a journey round the shores of the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea" (Atabey). While Chatzipanagioti-S. differentiates between the first and the second edition, the present variant is not described: the verso of the half-title of vol. 1 shows only the "avis au relieur"; p. 168: "Fin du tome premier"; p. 169 (beginning of text in vol. 2) is unpaginated. Thus, this apparently constitutes the second issue of the first editon. - Lechevalier stood in the service of Choiseul-Gouffier; from 1787 onwards he accompanied Alexander Ipsilanti on a tour of the Mediterranean which lasted several months. The maps show the Sea of Marmara, the Dardanelles, the Black Sea, the Bosporus, Constantinople, and Brussa. - Both title pages have contemporary ownership stamps ("S" with princely crown); a few minor tears to maps have been professionally repaired; some staining to title page of vol. 2. Marbled endpapers. Scarce first French edition of the famous description of Islamic Africa and Arabia, with the illustrations coloured by a contemporary hand; the first collection of voyages printed in France. The book was originally written in Arabic around 1526 by the Berber Andalusi geographer and traveller al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Wazzan al-Fasi (ca. 1494-ca. 1554), known in the West as Johannes Leo Africanus, translated into Italian by the author and first published in Venice in 1550. The Arabian Peninsula is depicted nearly complete on the double-page woodcut map and is treated extensively in the first chapter, which contains information on its people, cities, geography, religion, customs, costumes, etc. Illustrations include Arabian camels and veiled women. - Johannes Leo took his Christian name from his sponsor Pope Leo X when he converted to Christianity after his capture in 1520. While still very young he began to travel widely in the Barbary States; in 1513 he appears to have started on his famous Sudan and Sahara journeys (1513-15). In 1516-17 he travelled to Constantinople, probably visiting Egypt on the way; it is more uncertain when he visited Arabias, Armenia and Tartary. His three Egyptian journeys, immediately after the Turkish conquest, all probably fell between 1517 and 1520; on one of these he ascended the Nile from Cairo to Aswan. - Binding somewhat rubbed; spine head and hinges professionally repaired. Repairs to lower margin of first two leaves (very slight loss of title border), some toning and soiling, water- and inkstains. Very occasional marginal tears or worming. Early marginalia and ink ownerships on title page ("Pacauld" and "Ex Bibliotheca Joh. Huyseri", i. e. Johann Huyser). No other auction record of a coloured copy in RBH or ABPC. Adams L 482. Written for the use of the French army in Northern Africa and the Levant as well as for travellers and tradesmen throughout the eastern Mediterranean. - Pencil note "Relie au Caire" to flyleaf. Some browning throughout, title page and preface as well as final leaves show more pronounced foxing. Bookplate of Gaetano Querci on pastedown; old collection stamps on half-title and title page. First edition of this Syriac textbook, including one of the earliest investigations of the Samararitan language and script. "It is the least developed among the Semitic languages, closest to Syriac, but coarser, even less sophisticated. The Samaritan population has greatly dwindled; their capital is Nablus in Palestine, but there are also some in Damascus, Cairo, Acre and other places. Their common language is Arabic" (cf. Vater/J.). The Utrecht philologian J. Leusden (1624-99) studied philosophy in his hometown, then focused on theology and the oriental languages. He was ordained as a preacher in 1649. He subsequently moved to Amsterdam, where he took instruction in Hebrew and Talmudic scholarship from various Jewish teachers, including one of Arabian descent, and thus acquired such learning that he succeeded to the Utrecht chair of Hebrew and Jewish Antiquities in 1651 (cf.
