COX, Percy
Major-General Sir Percy Zachariah Cox
Item is in ORIGINAL Condition, With Blue Wrappers - As Issued, Complete with All the Ads!!! Notes & Condition: This is a succinct report containing the obituary of Sir Percy Cox, adviser to the Sultan of Oman and long term resident of the Persian Gulf, accompanied by his portrait photo. Excerpts from the text: "Naturally modest and self-effacing, his reputation in the councils of the great Badawi tribes of Arabia, of the shaikhs of the Persian Gulf coast, and of the political leaders in Iraq was greater than that ever reached by any other British officer....In 1893 Captain Cox was appointed Vice-Consul at Zeila, alonely post where the desert of British Somaliland meets the sea....He was then transfered to Berbera, and in 1899 began his long connection with the Persian Gulf as Consul at Muscat......During his five years as Consul, Cox made some short but important journeys into the almost unknown interior of Oman, mapping his routes....In 1904 he was promoted to Bushire as Consul-General, where his outstanding ability and grasp of affairs attracted the notice of Lord Curzon during his tour of the Persian Gulf.....In 1914 Sir Percy Cox was appointed Secretary to the Government of India and departed for Silma...." End excerpts 5 pages. Plus a portrait photo. Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. Major-General Sir Percy Zachariah Cox, GCMG, GCIE, KCSI (1864-1937) was a British Indian Army officer and colonial administrator in the Middle East. In the late 19th century and early 20th century, he was one of the major figures in the creation of Iraq. He was commonly known as Coccus (and as Kokkus to the Arabs). After holding minor administrative appointments in Kolhapur and Savantvadi in India, Cox was posted to British Somaliland, which was then administered from India, as Assistant Political Resident at Zeila. He transferred to Berbera in 1894. He was promoted to Captain in February 1895. In May 1895 he was given command of an expedition against the Red Hared clan, which had blocked trade routes and was raiding the coast. With only 52 Indian and Somali regulars and 1,500 poor quality, untrained local irregulars, he defeated the Red Hared in six weeks. Later that year, he was promoted to be assistant to the Viceroy's agent in Baroda. In October 1899, Cox was appointed Political Agent and Consul at Muscat, inheriting a tense situation between the British, who regarded the area as under their influence, Sultan Feisal, the local ruler, and the French, who gave protection to the local slave trade and had leased a coaling station from Feisal for their navy. Cox managed to successfully end French influence in the area. In June 1904, Cox was appointed Acting Political Resident in the Persian Gulf and Consul-General for the Persian provinces of Fars, Lurestan and Khuzestan and the district of Lingah, residing in the Persian side of the gulf at the city of Bushire. Five years later he was confirmed as Resident, a post which he occupied highly successfully until 1914, when he was appointed Secretary to the Government of India. Among his achievements while at Bushire was the establishment of the state of Kuwait as an autonomous kaza within the Ottoman Empire by the Anglo-Ottoman Convention of 1913. He was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in February 1910. Shortly after his return to India, he was sent back to the Persian Gulf as Chief Political Officer with the Indian Expeditionary Force to fight against the Ottoman Empire during WWI. Taking part in the campaigns in Mesopotamia and Palestine, he was promoted to Honorary Major-General in May 1917. During this time he established strong relations with Ibn Saud, the powerful ruler of the Nejd, with whom he had already had dealings while Resident. At the end of hostilities with the Ottoman Empire in November 1918, Cox was appointed Acting Minister in Tehran, negotiating the Anglo-Persian Agreement.

COX, Sir Percy.
Some Excursions in Oman.
35 pages. Plus photographic plates and a large fold-out color map, measuring approximately 8 x 14.5 inches (20 x 37cm). Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. Interesting narrative from a learned source, Sir Percy Cox, adviser to the Sultan of Oman and long term resident of the Persian Gulf. Cox outlines journeys undertaken from Abu Dhabi to Baraimi and along the fringe of Oman on the desert side, to the Jabal Akhdhar or Green Mountains - a distance of about 400 miles; and also his trip from Ras al Khaima to Baraimi and to the coast at Shinas, along it to Sohar. Features descriptions of Oman's capital - Muscat, the Trucial coast, its principalities and the Great Pearl Bank, local fauna, 'the music of the sands,' Ras al Khaima, stronghold of the Jowasmi pirates, and most interestingly perhaps, encounters with local sheikhs. Accompanied by photographic plates and a large fold-out colour map, this narrative also includes comments and notes by veteran Arabia explorers such as H. St. J.B. Philby.

CRAWFORD, O. G. S.
Air Photographs in the Middle East.
16 pages. Plus photographic plates. Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. This is a unique and captivating account of an archaeological journey through the air, undertaken by Crawford, at his own expense, to Egypt, Trans-Jordan, and Iraq. Having secured the cordial interest of the British Air Ministry and of the officers commanding the air forces in those countries, he was able to select from their negatives several thousand important pictures, which he brought home with him, to take part himself in flights over the areas of particular interest, and to leave behind him an awakened interest in the objects for which he had made the journey. A fascinating glimpse into what he was able to collect and to achieve, which has been of immeasurable value from an archaeological point of view, for example by revealing a buried site which previously could have only been revealed by perhaps years of excavation. Photographs include that of a ruined town on the Tigris between Mosul and Baghdad, seventy miles south-west of Mosul in the grassy desert; the Palace situated on the Persian Plateau in Hatra and its courtyard not previously observed; the so-called Median Wall; the Arch of Ctesiphon; as well as Old Basra and Modern Basra.

CURZON, George.

This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. This is an exceptional report on the new updated Persia map created by the RGS and Lord Curzon. One of the major contributions to the study of Persian history. Curzon a most prolific writer and explorer is renowned for his committment to detail and exploration. Ghani writes that, "his powers of observation and analysis were extraordinary; no detail ever escaped him." (Ghani 87.) The information was pulled from all the important sources, both from British and Russian explorers. This makes this report a highly valuable important Primary Resource.

CURZON, Hon. G. & LYNCH, Henry Blosse.
Two Reports on Persia: The Karun River and the Commercial Geography of South-West Persia [AND] Across Luristan to Ispahan.
Two reports on Persia altogether 45 pages including a full-page sketch map, plus 2 large fold-out colour maps. In original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. The first report: 24 pages, including a full-page sketch map, plus a large fold-out color map measuring 18.5 inches x 8.5 inches (47cm x 22cm). This is an exceptional expedition report on the Karun River and the commercial geography of south-west Persia, that pre-dates the authors all-important book, "Persia and the Persian Question", first published in 1892. The book is one of the most important books on Persia; dealing with every aspect of Persia, political, archaeological, cultural, etc., its great strength is its topographical section. As Ghani says, "his powers of observation and analysis were extraordinary; no detail ever escaped him. His book can still be used as a topographical guide for travel in Iran." Ghani 87. This makes this report a highly valuable important primary resource. The second report: 21 pages, plus a large fold-out color map, measuring approximately 13 inches x 21 inches (33 cm x 53 cm). Featuring first hand observations of nomadic Bakhtiari tribes, Lynch's chronology recounts his nineteenth century journey in Persia, which he delineates on a large colour map, showing his route from the ancient fortress city Shushter in the Khuzestan province, to Ispahan (Esfahan). Early adventure in West and Central Iran, comprising river-crossings, summit climbs, and destitute villages.
