Il territorio libanese, insanguinato da decenni di guerra civile, ancora oggi vive una situazione di estrema instabilità. Il Libano contemporaneo nacque dopo la prima guerra mondiale quando la Francia, potenza mandataria della zona, diede risposta alle legittime richieste di indipendenza da parte delle popolazioni cristiano-maronite che rivendicavano il diritto di uno stato proprio, distinto e separato dalla Siria a maggioranza arabo-islamica. Ma i confini del paese vennero ampliati a spese della Siria: l'annessione al territorio maronita di vaste zone abitate in prevalenza da musulmani fu decisione giacobina che portò instabilità e creò le premesse per i futuri conflitti. L'ostilità dei musulmani nei confronti dei maroniti costituisce la causa remota del fallimento del modello libanese e sottolinea ancora una volta la difficoltà della convivenza fra cristiani e islamici. Il conseguimento dell'indipendenza nel 1946, fu accompagnato da un equilibrio precario, frutto di difficili compromessi fra le componenti etniche e religiose del paese, ma generò anche un livello di benessere diffuso, impensabile per i paesi islamici vicini.
