<p>A very odd and remarkably scarce collection of stories for children by the widely revered ichthyologist and founder of Stanford University who has also attracted controversy for his views on eugenics. As Jordan explains in the introduction he was accustomed to telling stories to his own children was asked by colleagues to repeat the stories to other groups of children and the results transcribed by his colleagues were circulated among the kids so they could provide illustrations for this volume. The children's art line drawings sprinkled liberally throughout the text is utterly beguiling. At the end of the book are appended some additional non-fiction stories the illustrations for which were done as Jordan relates by University students. Among the credited artists was Bristow Adams founder of the oldest humor magazine in the American West the Stanford Chaparral. Adams is represented with a stunning drawing of the Blue Fox used as the book's frontispiece. Also represented with a number of charming animal illustrations is Chloe Lesley--professor painter and book illustrator; her works are held by the Smithsonian Stanford the Natural History Museum California Academy of Sciences and Washington State University archives. A fascinating item virtually impossible to find and a gorgeous gorgeous book. This appears to be the only edition though the copyright page states 1899 and the title-page 1902.
