Une croisée de routes commerciales propice à l'établissement de grands empires. Des richesses pétrolières moins miraculeuses qu'on ne croit. Tel est l'Irak, enfermé dans un paysage qui l'isole et le maintient dans un âpre destin. L'histoire y est une suite ininterrompue de guerres sociales qui éclairent les conflits actuels d'une lumière curieuse. C'est à Basrah qu'est apparu au IXe siècle le premier socialisme militant dont se réclame le syndicalisme arabe. Révoltes, répressions, jacqueries, grandes peurs, capitales réduites en poussière : la révolution du 14 juillet 1958 ne fut qu'un nouvel acte de cette tragédie permanente. Mais sa révolte pour le pain, l'Irak l'a transformée en protestation de la conscience individuelle contre l'Etat. La doctrine dissidente chiite, qui a brisé l'unité de l'Islam, a fait de l'objection de conscience une force politique qui est la donnée fondamentale de l'esprit public irakien." — "P.
