Introduction and indices by Sabine Schmidtke. EBN MATTAWAYH (Mattûya), ABÛ MO?AMMAD HASAN b. A?mad b. Mattawayh, Mu'tazilite theologian of the Basran school, a student of Qâzî 'Abd-al-Jabbar (d. 415/1025). Where Ebn Mattawayh lived and the date of his death are not known. Wilferd Madelung has established that his Majmû' was written rather soon after 'Abd-al-Jabbar's death and that the late date sometimes given for Ebn Mattawayh's death as 468/1075 or 469/1076 has no foundation. Two works of his survive and are being published: a complete treatise of Mu!tazilite theology and a treatise on the "fine points" of theology. His Ketâb al-majmû' fi'l-mo?i? be'l-taklif is, as D. Gimaret has shown in his preface to the second volume, an independent, explicative, and sometimes critical rewriting of ?Abd- al-Jabbar's al-Mohit fi'l-taklif. The first of the two parts of Ebn Mattawayh's al-Tadkera fi a?kam al-jawaher wa'l-a'raz has been published (ed. S. N. Lo?f and F. Badir'un, Cairo, 1975). The first volume is a treatise on the "physics, or natural philosophy, of the Mu'tazilite world view: substances, atoms, bodies, their various properties (colors, tastes, odors, sounds, heat and cold, speech and language), existence and nonexistence, the basic accidents (akwan), etc.; and on all the auxiliary matters that form the background and supposition for arguments in the greater questions of theology: the eternity and justice of God, creation, the temporality of the Koran, man's power, moral responsibility (taklif), etc. According to the editors of the first part, the second and final part, fi'l-?ayat, which would be the "biology" of the theologian's world view, was being prepared for publication. The Ta?kera might be usefully read in conjunction with a treatise on the same subject by another disciple of ?Abd al-Jabbar, Abu Rasid Sa?id b. Mo?ammad b. Sa'id Nîsabûrî, al-Masâ 'el fi'l-?elâf bayn al-Basriyin wa'l-Bagdadiyin (Beirut, 1979). Ebn Mattawayh was one of the Mu'tazilites who favored 'Ali b. Abi ?aleb. Ebn Abi'l-?adid cites three times Ebn Mattawayh's Ketab al-kefaya (now lost), showing him to hold 'Ali superior to Abû Bakr (I, p. 8), and even saying that Ali was protected from sin and error (ma'?ûm) although, contrary to the Imami position, this was not necessary for his imamate (VI, pp. 376-77)-ma'sûmîya (protection from sin) necessarily being a quality of the Prophet during the time of his mission (VII, p.10). 'Alî 'Imâdu d-Dîn Nasîmî, (1369-1417), was a 14th-century Azeri or Iraqi-Turkmen, Hurûfi poet. Known mostly by his pen name (or takhallus) of Nesîmî, he composed one divan in Azerbaijani, one in Persian, and a number of poems in Arabic. He is considered one of the greatest Turkic mystical poets of the late 14th and early 15th centuries and one of the most prominent early divan masters in Turkic / Turkish literary history (the language used in this divan is close to Azerbaijani). Hurufism (Arabic: Hurufiyyah) was a Sufi doctrine based on the mysticism of letters (?urûf), which originated in Astrabad and spread to areas of western Persia and Anatolia in the late 14th and early 15th centuries. Extremely rare.

1720. Large Original Engraving of the ancient Persian necropolis Naqsh-e Rostam. Printed in 1720. Titled "Description des Tombeaux Autres Monumens Anciens que l'on trouve non loin de Persepolis dans une Montage de Roche Appelle La Montagne des Sepulchres." One large image of the Naqsh-e Rostam tombs. Two large detailed images of royal tombs with the header "Tombeau des Anciens Rois de Perse." French calligraphic text in the middle describing the tombs. The incredible series of ancient tombs known as Naqsh-e Rostam are located in central Iran outside of the city of Shiraz and were constructed over three thousand years ago. Naqsh-e Rostam consists of five different tombs belonging to the Achaemenian Kings Darius 1 2 and 3 as well as King Artaxerxes and King Xerxes. The tombs are known locally as the 'Persian crosses' because of the shape of the facades. The entrance to the tombs is at the center of each cross which opens onto to a small chamber where the king lay in a sarcophagus. There are seven enormous relief's chiselled into the mountain depicting scenes of victorious battles and royal life. 17" x 21.5." Several small tears on blank margin not affecting image area or text. Two original folds. Overall in verygood condition. unknown

1864. Two original antique steel costume engravings of a Persian Iran Royal Officer and Noble woman printed in 1864. Overall size: 9" x 12.5." The plate illustrations are brightly colored and intricately detailed characterization of the traditional costumes of a Persian Royal Officer and Noble woman. In the engraving of the Royal Officer titled "Khatchadour D'hohannes: Officier du Prince Royal de Perse" his attire entails a vibrant green coat with gold trimmings which covers a gold-colored ensemble with a purple sash that stores his dagger. In the engraving of the Persian Woman titled "Dame Persane" she is depicted in traditional costume as imagined by Europeans in the 1800's. The woman is shown leaning against a banister wearing an embroidered white satin gown with a pink silk and fur trimmed coat and a feathered headdress. General age related toning. Photo album of 123 black & white photos of Iran during the 1940's. The album has 17 leaves of 38 pasted photographs accompanied by 8 loose photos. Sizes vary but most approximately 3.5"x2.5". This is a fascinating album of striking images of daily life in Iran captured by American soldiers during the 1940's. It is rare to find an album with so many local photographs of the region and people. Some of the images include architectural structures the ruins of Dezful the Ancient Dezful bridge sweeping mountain landscapes a camel caravan local Persians outside and inside their homes in traditional dress street views and bazars from Dezful & Andimeshk locals bathing and taking the train and battleships docked in the Persian Gulf. The 1921 magazine has over 100 pages with illustrative photos on almost every page showing the traditional life in the Qajar era including water salesmen and tribesmen warriors on horseback. The 1943 magazine shows Iran during the war years and has already advanced significantly compared to images in the 1920s. The 1951 1968 and 1975 magazines show Iran during Mohammed Reza Shah's attempt to modernize the country. These have color images of the bazaar and landscapes as well as people of Iran.
