YAKUP KORKMAZ.
The Messiah and women: A biblical view on women and the good news for them.
New English Paperback. 12mo. (17 x 11 cm). In English. 136 p., b/w ills. The Messiah and women: A biblical view on women and the good news for them. This resource entitled is also found in the Turkish language under the title Isa Mesih ve Kadin: Kutsal Kitab'in Kadina Bakisi ve Onlar Icin Olan Iyi Haberi. This book is to be used for distribution among Muslim background women so that they may hear the gospel of Jesus Christ from a world-view and paradigms that are familiar to them. The Bible and the gospel address each paradigm that a Muslim woman has concerns and fears about such as issues of cleanliness/purity, honor/shame, guilt/righteousness and power (spiritual forces). The last chapter deals with the biology and theology of having children and the value of boys and girls according to the Bible. There is great ignorance in many cultures regarding this subject as it is generally believed that the woman determines the sex of the child, and it is always the woman's fault if they cannot bear a child, especially a male child. Some of the ideas may seem strange to a person with a western world-view who grew up mainly with a guilt/righteousness paradigm when thinking of the gospel's application. This book will give the western background Christian a fuller understanding of of the gospel's application to each paradigm and how relevant the Bible is to every culture and situation. This resource will also help the evangelist to Muslims better share the gospel's message to their Muslim friend in a more culturally appropriate way. This book answers the following questions and many more: Are women lacking in religion? Are men really created superior to women in intelligence and faith? Are boys more valuable than girls? Did you know that one of God's names is love? Did you know that even before God created the world He thought of you and planned to save you? Did you know that God wants to come to your home and your heart and to be your guest? Did you know that you are also invited to the feast of God which He has prepared? Is honor important for God? Have we dishonored God or dirtied His honor? What did God sacrifice for you? Did you know that the purity and holiness of the Messiah is contagious and that the person who touches Him is purified from the inside and the outside? In the Tevrat and Zebur do you know who the promised seed is? Does the Evil-Eye have any effect and how can we be protected from it? How can we enter into the Kingdom of God? Endorsements: In Jesus Christ and Women Yakup Korkmaz succinctly tells what the Bible has to say about the importance of women to God. There is a great tendency in all of the world since the Fall of mankind for men to be completely irresponsible regarding the treatment women. This has led to horrible abuses and suffering of women in most of the world, particularly in those places where the Good News of the sacrificial love of Jesus Christ is not widely known. The author gives the answer to this problem. It is the love of Jesus Christ who elevates and exalts the role of women, and gives men the ability to love them sacrificially. I commend this book to anyone seeking the truth of God about this important subject. Dr. Paul S. Sagan Senior Pastor Covenant Presbyterian Church Fayetteville, Arkansas...

YASAR NEZIHE [BÜKÜLMEZ], (1882-1971).
[TURKISH FEMALE POET OF THE FIRST TURKISH POEM FOR "MAY 1"] Feryadlarim [i.e. My screechs]. Biographical introduction by Rifat Necdet [Evrimer].
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Contemporary green cloth bdg. Slight scratches on faded cloth, with slight foxing on pages. Overall a good copy. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 238, [2] p., 1 b/w portrait of Nezihe, ills. First and only edition of this exceedingly rare first book including a "May 1" poem, written by a Turkish female poet Yazar Nezihe. Nezihe was considered as one of the female poets in the Ottoman Period. She is known as a writer of the first Turkish poem for International Workers' Day on May 1. Yasar Nezihe differed from other female poets of the period in the sense of her life story and a contrary literary identity. Throughout her lifetime, she wrote poems about her penurious and challenging childhood as well as her love life and marriages. Being known as the first female poet whose works were published in Aydinlik Dergisi (i.e. Enlightenment Journal), Yasar Nezihe also became prominent for supporting labor unrests and her activist identity. She was recognized as a socialist poet who gave voice to poverty in her poems. She wrote the poem named "Gazete Sahiplerine" (i.e. To Newspaper Owners) addressing the executives with the intent of supporting laborers who were on strike because of the disagreement between newspaper owners and Mürettipler Cemiyeti (i.e. Typesetters Society). (Source: Wikipedia). This is her second poetry book. Being the first female poet wrote in Aydinlik Dergisi, Yasar Nezihe Bükülmez was accused of being a communist because of her writings, her membership of Osmanli Amele Cemiyeti [The Ottoman Workers' Society], and support for labor unrests and was arrested. Book has a biographical introductory text by Rifat Necdet Evrimer, (1898-1971) who was a Turkish/Ottoman poet, educator, and biographer in which is important being the earliest male gaze in its period. Özege 5645.; TBTK 6996.; Five copies in OCLC: 25346925 (Four copies) and 1030875484 (One copy).

YAVUZ SELIM KARAKISLA.
Women, war and work in the Ottoman Empire: Society for the employment of Ottoman Muslim women, (1916-1923).
New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 15 cm). In English. 582 p. World War I deeply altered the lives of Muslim Ottoman women. The Ottoman Army consisted only of Muslim men and war caused the death of one and a half million Muslim Ottoman men. The heavy losses of the Ottoman army meant that every day more and more dependants lost their breadwinners. When the breadwinner had gone to war, was wounded or died at the front; the wives, daughters, sisters and mothers they had left behind were faced with two options: to find work and make a living, or to starve to death. On 14 August 1916, the Committee of Union and Progress (Ittihâd ve Terakkî Cemiyeti), the ruling party of the Ottoman Empire, established a new society under the leadership of one of its leading figures: Vice-Commander and Minister of War, Enver Pasa. The Society for the Employment of Ottoman Muslim Women (Kadinlari Çalistirma Cemiyet-i Islâmiyesi) was a Unionist organization created to find employment for Muslim Ottoman women who were in urgent economic need. Within a matter of months, it received more than 14,000 applications and was soon employing 8,194 destitute Ottoman women in its braches and in the related state and military institutions. In time, it would offer jobs to an aggregate number of 20,000 women workers, and became the leading employer of Muslim Ottoman women in the Ottoman Empire. This comprehensive work constitutes both a case study of Muslim Ottoman women during World War I, and a detailed analysis of the foundation, organization and activities of the Society for the Employment of Ottoman Muslim Women, created to find employment for them.

YAVUZ SULTAN SELIM [= Selim I the Steadfast; Pseudonym: Selimî], (9th Ottoman sultan, 88th Islamic Caliph), (1470-1520).
[ROYAL LITERATURE / SULTAN'S POETRY] Bârika. Yavuz Sultan Selim'in es'ariyla tercümeleri. Translation from Persian by Seyh Vasfi. Sultan Yavuz's portrait by [Mikaeloglu] Antranik Efendi, (1850-?).
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Paperback. Foolscap 8vo. (18 x 12,5 cm). In Ottoman script. 1 b/w Selim's portrait engraving, 67 p. Selim I, nicknamed Yavuz, "the Stern" or "the Steadfast", but often rendered in English as "the Grim" (October 10, 1465/1466/1470 - September 22, 1520), was the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1512 to 1520. His reign is notable for the enormous expansion of the Empire, particularly his conquest between 1516-1517 of the entire Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt, which included all of Sham, Hejaz, Tihamah, and Egypt itself. With the heart of the Arab World now under their control, the Ottomans became the dominant power in the region, and in the Islamic world. Upon conquering Egypt, Selim took the title of Caliph of Islam, being the first Ottoman sultan to do so. He was also granted the title of "Khâdim ül Haramain ish Sharifain" (Servant of the Holy Cities of Mecca and Medina), by the Sharif of Mecca in 1517. Selim was also a distinguished poet who wrote both Turkish and Persian verse under the pseudonym =[mahlas] Selimi; collections of his Persian poetry are extant today. In one of his poems, he wrote as 'A carpet is large enough to accommodate two Sufis, but the world is not large enough for two kings'. Sultan Selim, who spoke Arabic and Persian very fluently, wrote Persian poems cursively under the nickname Selimî. Those poems are extant today at the Imperial Archives at The Topkapi Palace Museum. He had Turkish poems as well and his Persian Divân (T.N. poetry book) was printed in 1306 in Istanbul and was published in 1904 by Paul Horn in Berlin by the order of Wilhelm II, the German Emperor. During his eight years of ruling, he didn't have any time to rest, he slept four hours a day and spent the rest of the day writing and reading. Sultan Selim has many powerful poems with deep meaning and artistic style. Translation from Persian by Seyh Vasfi. [Mikaeloglu] Antranik Efendi, (1850-?), was a Turco-Armenian painter who worked for the Ottoman court notably regarded for his sultan portraits during the reigns of Sultan Abdülhamid II (1876-1909), Sultan Mehmed Resad (1908-1918) and Sultan Vahdeddin (1918-1922). During the administration of the last two sultans, in particular, he received a number of orders from the palace and while Abdülhamid II was on the throne in the 1890s he sketched gravures for Servet-i Fûnun (Wealth of Sciences) journal. A vast body of these gravures depicts leading names of the age -Egypt's Khedive Tevfik Pasha, Abbas Pasha, Sultan Abdülaziz, etc. and portraits illustrating the photographs of preceding sultans as well as architectural drawings such as Süleymaniye Mosque and Ayasofya-Santa Sophia. Another record testifying to the fact that Antranik Efendi received commissions during the reign of Sultan Mehmed Resad and worked for the royal family is a 1916-dated document in Dolmabahçe Palace Museum Archive. Hegira: 1308 = Gregorian: 1891. Özege 1679. First and only edition. Extremely rare.

YAVUZ TATIS (From the Collection of).
Epigraphica Lydien, Mysien, Türkei der Sammlung Yavuz Tatis. Prep. by Georg Petzl, Elmar Schwertheim.
New German Original bdg. 4to. (31 x 23 cm). In German. 212 p., ills.
