‎[IMPORTANT AUTOGRAPH LETTER BY OTTOMAN PRINCE] Autograph letter signed 'Yusuf Izzeddin' to 'Birâder Efendi' who was his brother prince of the Ottoman dynasty.‎

‎YUSUF NÂBÎ (URFALI), (1642-1712).‎

‎[A BRILLIANT TRAVEL ACCOUNT OF MECCA AND MEDINA AND VOYAGE TO HEJAZ] Tuhfetü'l-haramayn. [i.e. A gift to Haramayn; Mecca and Medina].‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) In contemporary fine black 1/3 leather bdg. Decorated gilt to spine. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 112 p. Extremely rare first edition of this Nabi's first-hand account of Mecca, Medina and the Hejaz during his pilgrimage in the late 17th century. This is the most celebrated literary pilgrimage narrative written in Ottoman Turkish. Nabi (1642-1712) was one of the prominent Ottoman poets and is considered a foremost exponent of the didactic trend (hikem-i tarz) in Ottoman Turkish literature. Nabi, whose given name was Yusuf, was born in Urfa (then known as Ruha) in 1052/1642. In 1082/1671 he took part in the Ottoman military campaign in Poland, in the retinue of Müsahib Pasha, (1640-1686). Having spent thirteen years in Istanbul, Nabi desired to go on a pilgrimage to Mecca. He was personally ready to undertake a journey to the Hijaz and to set down an eloquent account of his journey, the experience of his lifetime. Accordingly, having achieved a position of good standing with his patrons, Müsahib Mustafa Pasha and Mehmed IV, Nabi revived his longstanding desire to perform the hajj. In 1089/1678, at around 37 years of age, he set out in a small private caravan from Istanbul, passing through Konya, Urfa, Damascus, Jerusalem and Cairo, where he joined the main Egyptian pilgrimage caravan. The work, which is one of the most successful examples of Ottoman insa (artistic prose), includes historical, sociological, geographical and autobiographical information. In his preliminary remarks, Nabi indicates that he had received governmental help for his journey. He relates that he first obtained leave for the hajj from his patron Musahib Mustafa Pasha, and then submitted a qasida to Mehmed IV, describing the sacred places. The sultan provided Nabi a letter of recommendation addressed to Abdurrahman Pasha (d. 1691), governor of Egypt, ordering him to enable Nabi to make a comfortable journey. Nabi traveled in a small private caravan, since the caravan extended its route to Nabi's homeland, Urfa, and spent about fifty days there. It appears that he generally followed the usual route of the pilgrimage caravan from Istanbul to Damascus, passing through Scutari, Kartal, Gebze, Hersek, Iznik, Eskisehir, Seyitgazi, Aksehir, Ilgin, Ladik, Konia, Eregli, Adana, Misis bridge, Payas, Antioche, Aleppo (with a long detour to Urfa (Edessa) and back to Aleppo via Aintab), Hama, Hims and the Kuteyfe strait. He was fascinated with the splendid architecture of the buildings, the bazaars and the mosques built side by side by Kurdish and Circassian rulers and the Nile when he arrived in Cairo. Nabi gives a general description of the city of Cairo, the Nile, the two reservoirs of the city, parklands, the Ahram hills and the immediate neighborhood of the city. In Mecca, Nabi visited the sacred sites enthusiastically and performed the hajj on 77 January 1679. He gives a moving account of his experience as a pious emotional pilgrim. It appears that Nabi stayed in Mecca for more than twenty days. Immediately after 1 Muharrem 1090/12 February 1679, he set out for Medina, presumably in the Damascus caravan. While in Medina, Nabi served at the tomb of the Prophet by lighting the candles since his name was on the honorary list of attendants who were determined by the central government to serve the sanctuaries in Mecca and Medina. Nabi regards these services as a testimony to the legitimacy of Ottoman rule. He summarizes his journey of return from Medina to Damascus and to Istanbul in a few general words. Over the course of time, different societes have caused their lifestyles, traditions, and tastes to be reflected in the development of an extremely rich architectural heritage. This richness has been supported by the geographical position of Anatolia and by its own inherent diversity and exquisite natural assets and has also been the foundation of a historical accumulation stretching from the days when mankind first sought to consciously order its life down to the present day".‎

‎YÜZBASI HARPUTLU SARACZÂDE ISHAK HAKKI.‎

‎[FIRST OTTOMAN GUIDE TO PALAEOKASTRON] Balikesir rehberi.‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original bdg. Demy 8vo. (22 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script. 74 p., one folded page. Özege 1623. First and Only Edition. Ex-library stamps of Balikesir Halkevi [i.e. Balikesir Public House]. Yüzbasi [i.e. Captain] Harputlu Saraczâde Ishak Hakki Bey was an officer who participated in the War of Independence (1919-1922) on the Balikesir front. He prepared a guide that explained the city in detail during the period he was in and around Balikesir in the 1920s. Balikesir is a city in Turkey and is the capital city of Balikesir Province. It was the capital of Karasi between 1341-1922. Close to modern Balikesir was the Roman town of Hadrianutherae, founded, as its name commemorates, by the emperor Hadrian. Hadrian came to the region in A.D. 124, as a result of a successful bear hunting he had established a city called his name here. It is estimated that the city consisted of the castle, the homestead, the stud, and a few homes. It is thought that the small town was where the current stadium is present. Members of the Roman and Pre-Byzantine dynasty had used this castle as a vacation area and for hunting. During the Byzantine period, the small town which had become increasingly neglected was known as Palaeokastron meaning Old Castle. Also, when the Turkmens came from Middle Asia to Mysia, they called it Balukiser because of the remains of the castle, as Hisar is the Turkish word for castle. In 1345, Balikesir city was annexed by the Ottomans. In 1898 an earthquake destroyed much of the city. The number of buildings that were not destroyed in the 1898 earthquake was only 51.[7] In 1914, Turkish students marched through the streets of the city singing a song of hatred against the Greeks. In April 1916, the Christian refugees of the villages in the vicinity of Balikesser underwent persecution from the Turks. They were refused bread on payment. The women were told that they should become Muslim so as not to die of hunger. At the beginning of June, many young Greeks were forced by the authorities to convert to Islam at Government headquarters. On 30 June 1920, Balikesir city was conquered by the invading Greeks but on 6 September 1922, the Turkish army took back the city. During the Turkish War of Independence, Balikesir was the main center of the militias in Western Anatolia against the Greeks. Balikesir's former name was Karasi because Balikesir city was founded by Karasi Beg in the 13th century as using the remains of the small town. 1297 is considered as the date of establishment of the city which was one of the few to be founded by the Turks in Anatolia. The Karasids was a Turkic principality in Mysia. Since the 13th century, Balikesir city has been the administrative center of the Mysia region. This guide to this city and it's around includes six chapters titled introduction, geographic structure, social structure, economic structure, education, municipality, and foundations. This is the earliest Turkish guide to Balikesir includes interesting and comprehensive information in detail about the topography, geography, and demography of the region. Hegira: 1341 = Roumî 1339 = Gregorian 1920. Özege 1623.; Not in OCLC. First Edition. Very scarce.‎
