‎Ottoman costumes. From textile to identity.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (22 x 15 cm). In English. 336 p., color and b/w ills. The study of clothes and dressing has great potential for social and cultural history. Typically Ottoman urbanites situated their fellow men after a glance at the clothing worn by the latter. As to the women, such conclusions were more difficult to draw, as all females were to be modestly covered up and ideally almost invisible. Yet in practice, at least from the eighteenth century onwards, it was often possible, at least in Istanbul, to distinguish fashionable from soberly pious women. To be aware of people's modes of dressing thus was part of knowing one's way around in Ottoman society. But clothes were not only part of the informal social order, enforced, as far as the individual was concerned, by relatives and neighbours. In addition the Ottoman state took a major interest in regulating the public appearance of its subjects; thus the adherents of the empire's varying religions were to be immediately distinguishable through their clothing. At the same time, particularly but not exclusively in the nineteenth century, the unification of costume among public officials and military men was another state concern. Official regulation of costume, enforced or merely attempted, thus should be studied as part of the public image of Ottoman society, as it existed in the heads of bureaucrats and also of the sultan himself. From a moderately wealthy Ottoman subject's point of view, clothes formed an essential part of the presentation of self. This becomes clear once photography had become popular in these circles during the later nineteenth century. As people could usually choose what clothes they wore when having their pictures taken, these images can be taken as statements concerning official position, wealth, modernity or elegance. Moreover clothes might refer to cultural relations with the outside world that the wearer was involved in, perhaps in real life but at least in his/her imagination. Conversely Polish gentlemen of the seventeenth century developed a preference for kaftans visibly inspired by Ottoman prototypes. These were meant to project a synthetic identity described as 'Sarmatian', but certainly also to advertise the fact that its wearers possessed connections to Istanbul. Given the power and wealth of the sultans' court, features of Ottoman dress also were imitated among other European aristocrats, including King Henry VIII. of England. Thus apart from everything else, the history of Ottoman clothing possesses numerous intercultural dimensions, that the contributors to this volume have attempted to explore.‎

‎Animals and people in the Ottoman Empire.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 475 p., 30 color plts. Similarly to members of other pre-industrial - and industrial - societies, the subjects of the Ottoman sultans depended on the animals they raised and whether they liked it or not, certain non-domestic animals sharing their home environments had a profound impact on their lives as well. Numerous topics await discussion: quite apart from milk, yoghurt and cheese, honey was in great demand, as it was one of the principal sweeteners in a world where sweet foods were popular yet cane sugar was scarce and expensive. Bee-keeping was therefore a common activity in Anatolian, Balkan and Syrian villages. For clothing and the outfitting of dwellings, animals also were indispensable: the wool from local sheep served to make cloaks and vests of different qualities, to say nothing of the kelims and carpets that made the reputation of towns like Usak or Gordes in western Anatolia. Animals were also the principal source of motor energy: in many places horses drove the mills where the inhabitants ground their flour. Most importantly, animals were indispensable to peasants as oxen drew the plough. Throughout Anatolia moreover, ox-drawn carts were common; and in eighteenth- and nineteenth century Istanbul, women often went to the picnic grounds surrounding the city in such conveyances, gaily decorated for the occasion. In a less peaceful vein, before the late 1700s most gunpowder was also a product of horse-driven mills. Well-to-do travellers, but also the Ottoman court and army made extensive use of horses. The sultans' rapid conquest of south-eastern and a sizeable chunk of central Europe would have been impossible without the famous cavalry of sipahis. Fine horses were a source of prestige, and expensive: to celebrate these prized possessions their owners often spent a great deal of money on saddles, saddlecloth and bridles. Ottoman dignitaries also typically went hunting on horseback; and in this case they made extensive use of different birds of prey, some taken as nestlings and others captured when fully grown. While much of our documentation concerns the royal hunt, provincial dignitaries and doubtless a number of peasants too participated in this kind of chase whenever they got the chance. Yet in spite of the enormous impact of the animal world on human life, with respect to Ottoman territories, the number of scholars dealing with the topic remains quite limited. Thus our volume, which will focus on the relationship between people and animals is part of a pioneering effort, and other work on this fascinating topic will certainly follow.‎

The Directorate of Istanbul Archaeological Museums was appointed to lead the archaeological excavations at Uskudar, Sirkeci, Sultanahmet and Yenikapi station constructions of Marmaray and Metro Projects, among the most important transportation projects of Turkey. Our largest area of excavation is at Yenikapi on the Marmara coast, the area known as Langa, which housed the harbour of Byzantine Istanbul. Excavations at Theodosian Harbour brought to light, to date, a total of 31 shipwrecks of various sizes and types. Archaeological work on shipwrecks requires an entirely different expertise; therefore, our Museum has authorised Istanbul University's Department of Restoration and Conservation with the documentation, lifting, conservation-restoration works as well as preparing the shipwrecks for display at the museum. The team started the work with a big staff and has already completed the lifting of and has taken into conservation eleven shipwrecks in conformity with the international norms and standards. The book in your hands explicitly presents the work conducted by the IU team employing the latest technology available, their scientific approach and the care and importance they pay to the work. ‎Proceedings of the International Symposium on Islamic Civilisation in Southern Africa, 31 August - 3 September 2006.‎

‎New English Original bdg. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English, Turkish and Arabic. 476 p. Proceedings of the International Symposium on Islamic Civilisation in Southern Africa, 31 August - 3 September 2006. This book resulted from the symposium on "Islamic Civilisation in Southern Africa" which was held in Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa, on 31 August-3 September 2006. It was co-organised by IRCICA, Awqaf Foundation of South Africa (Awqaf SA) and the University of Johannesburg. The symposium was a landmark event, first to be co-organised by the OIC and IRCICA in the region. It aimed, among others, to increase knowledge on the history and heritage of Islam in the OIC Member States and their neighbours in the region, and to promote dialogue amongst Muslim peoples in the region and with peoples of other faiths and cultures. After the opening addresses, the book contains the keynote article by Mahomed Haroon, titled "Southern African Muslim Communities in Context and Scholarship". Then come six articles under the section title Historical Background, five articles under Challenge of Racism and Response in Politics, seven articles under Spiritual Culture and Learning, and seven articles under Miscellany. The papers have been edited and prepared for publication by Mahomed Haroon and Suleman Essop Dangor, specialists of Islamic culture in Africa.‎

It is a system targeting to raise perfect men. S¿fism invites man to know himself. Man is a being comprising body ad soul. Similar to foods not being ignored for the body for a healthy life, food for the soul should also not be ignored. Sufism relates to man both for his spiritual world and material aspect".‎
