‎GUILLAUME DELISLE, (1675-1726).‎

‎Very Good French Original decorated map. Hand-coloured. Oblong elephant folio. (54 x 76 cm). In French. Shows Greece, Archipelago, Isle de Candie, Asia Minor (Western side), and East Mediterranean. Delisle od de l'Isle was a French cartographer known for his popular and accurate maps of Europe and the newly explored Americas. At 27, Delisle was admitted into the French Académie Royale des Sciences, an institution financed by the French state. After that date, he signed his maps with the title of "Géographe de l'Académie". Five years later, he moved to the Quai de l'Horloge in Paris, a true publishing hub where his business prospered. Delisle's progress culminated in 1718 when he received the title of Premier Géographe du Roi. He was appointed to teach geography to the Dauphin, King Louis XIV's son, a task for which he received a salary. Again, his father's reputation as a man of science probably helped the younger Delisle. Historian Mary Sponberg Pedley says, 'once authority was established, a geographer's name might retain enough value to support two or three generations of mapmakers'. Delisle's case, it could be said that his accomplishments surpassed his father's. Up to that point, he had drawn maps not only of European countries, such as Italy, Spain, Germany, Great Britain, Poland, and regions such as the Duchy of Burgundy, but he had also contributed to the empire's claims to recently explored continents of Africa and the Americas. Like many cartographers of his day, Delisle did not travel with the explorers. He drew maps mostly in his office, relying on a variety of data. The quality of his maps depended on a solid network to provide him first-hand information. Given his family's and his own reputation, Delisle had access to fairly recent accounts of travellers who were returning from the New World, which gave him an advantage over his competitors. Being a member of the Académie, he also kept current with recent discoveries, especially in astronomy and measurement. When he could not confirm the accuracy of a source, he would indicate it clearly on his maps. For instance, his Carte de la Louisiane shows a river that the baron of Lahontan claimed he discovered. As no one else could validate it, Delisle noted a warning to the viewer that it might not exist. (Source: Wikipedia). Tooley, p.43.‎

‎Nuovo Atlante di Hierapolis di Frigia VII. Cartografia archaeologica della citta e delle necropoli.‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (35 x 25 cm). In Italian. 293 p., color ills.

‎Istanbul: Mill Romanlar Ktbhanesi Aded: 2 / Ikbl Ktbhanesi Sahibi Hseyin Matbaa-yi Amed / Orhaniye Matbaasi 1928. 4th Edition . Leather. Very Good. 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall. Contemporary 1/3 leather bdg. made as original illustrated covers saved inside. Foolscap 8vo. 18 x 12 cm. In Ottoman script. 221 p.; 291 p. Fourth Edition both. lms bir kadinin evrk-i metrkesi. Gzide Sabri Aygn was a Turkish female writer known for her romance novels which were published in multiple editions and several languages. Gzife Sabri was born to Salih resat a civil servant at the Ottoman Justice Ministry and his spouse Nigar in Findikli quarter of Istanbul then Ottoman Empire in 1886. She had two sisters Fatma Aliye and Emine Semiye. She grew up in amlica neighborhood of Istanbul. In later years she had to leave Istanbul and move to Anatolia with her family as her father was exiled resulted from his opposition to the despotism of Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II reigned 1876-1909. At a young age she was married to Ahmet Sabri Aygn the first notary of Beyoglu. She was educated at home by special tutors. She was interested in literature inspired by her teacher Hodja Tahir Effendi a dictionary writer. She started to write in her very young age. However her teachers proposed her to better deal with the religious matters instead of poetry. Contrary to the pressures of her literature teacher she wrote her first novel Mnevver in her youth years in 1899. She wrote the novel in remembrance of her friend who died from tuberculosis. It was serialized in the newspaper Hanimlara Mahsus "For Ladies" and won well recognition. In 1901 two years later the novel was published as book and was also translated into Serbian language. Her husband felt discomfort by his wife's prominence. As her teachers' reaction was not enough her husband also objected to her writing. However her enthusiasm could not deter her from writing. It is understood that her husband tried to prevent her writing as he did not allow her to write already at the wedding. She was forced to continue writing at night or secretly. After a short time her husband died. The unexpected death of her husband left deep traces in her. Gzide Sabri became a female writer who remained lifelong unhappy having a sad life in the literature history. During this time the Servet-i Fnun "Wealth of Knowledge" movement formed by Recaizade Mahmud Ekrem 1847-1914 and his students left its mark on the literature. Gzide Sabri was one of the authors who did not join the movement and remained on their own line. She is considered as one of the first female novelist among the Turkish writers with widespread fame even though she was not involved in the new literary movement. She published her works in the Servet-i Fnun and other journals of the "National Literature" without being a member of any literary community. Her novels which were written in the early years of the Second Constitutional Era 1908-1918 and the Republican era from 1922 and were subject of feeling dream blind love and broken hearts were very popular and had multiple editions and were repeatedly filmed. Her second novel lms Bir Kadinin Evrak-i Metrkesi "Derelict Documents of a Dead For Woman" was a bestseller. It was first published in 1901 reprinted several times and was filmed twice in 1956 and then in 1969. The novel was translated into Armenian language. She authored romance novels for simple readers. She is considered as the author writing the first examples of the so-called mass-market romance novels and pioneer of the broken-hearts novels in her country. Her 1930-novel Hicran Gecesi "Night of Sorrow" is about the forbidden love of a bad woman. This book takes the romance novel one step forward in forbidden impossible love story. Her novels which take place in Istanbul attracted interest of readers outside of big cities like Istanbul and Izmir as well. first book: zege 16077 zege has 4th edition however page number: 221.; TBTK 5323.; Second one: zege 15317.; TBTK 5320. <br/> <br/> (Mill Romanlar Ktbhanesi, Aded: 2) / Ikbl Ktbhanesi Sahibi Hseyin, Matbaa-yi Amed&ic hardcover‎

‎GÖNÜL DÖNMEZ-COLIN‎

‎Women, Islam, and Cinema‎

‎Illustrated edition. 208 pages. 6.75x4.75x0.50 inches. "This is the first book to examine the troubled relationships between women, Islam and cinema. Film critic and author Gönül Dönmez-Colin explores the role of women as spectators, images and image constructors in the cinemas of the countries where Islam is the predominant religion, focusing on Iran and Turkey from the Middle East, drawing parallels from Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, the two Central Asian Republics of the former Soviet Union, and Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Indonesia, the prominently Muslim Asian countries with a challenging film industry. Some of the relevant films made in India by and for Muslim Indians are also explored. Dönmez-Colin examines prevalent cinematic archetypes, including the naïve country girl who is deceived and dishonoured, or the devious seductress who destroys the sanctity of marriage, and looks well at controversial elements such as screen rape, which, feminist film critics claim, caters to male voyeurism. She also discusses recurring themes, such as the myths of femininity, the endorsement of polygamy and the obsession with male children, as well as the most common stereotypes, depicting women as mothers, wives and daughters. Given the diversity of cultures, rather than viewing national cinemas as aspects of a single development, the author focuses on individual histories, traditions and social and economic circumstances as points of reference, which are examined in the context of social and political evolution and the status of women within Islam. Women in Islamic Cinema is a much-needed and timely work that will appeal to the curious reader as well as to the student of film." Publisher's description.‎

‎Die Karaz. Keramik von Tepecik in Ostanatolien.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (27,5 x 19,5 cm). In German. 502 p. B/w ills.

‎Ottoman ceramics embracing the Mediterranean and their reflections to the present.= Akdenizle kucaklasan Osmanli seramikleri ve günümüze ulasan yansimalari.‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 23 cm). In English and Turkish. [10], 142, [1] p., color ills. Ottoman ceramics embracing the Mediterranean and their reflections to the present.= Akdenizle kucaklasan Osmanli seramikleri ve günümüze ulasan yansimalari. In the considerably long time span from the 16th century to the beginning of the 20th century, when the Iznik, Kutahya and Canakkale ceramics were in production, the Ottoman Empire spread across three continents, and her galleons, galleys and lighters carried her flag on trade missions and voyages on the open seas such as the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, the Black Sea and the Indian Ocean in addition to the Mediterranean. Various types of imaginary ships in the Ottoman ceramics bringing to life the dreams of the masters regarding the far-away lands seem to be capturing an image only. The most important feature of the vessels, usually depicted without details, is their sails of various types, which led them to the open seas.‎
