[Utah Series In Turkish And Islamic Studies ] In 1915, the Ottoman government, then run by the Young Turks, deported most of its Armenian citizens from their eastern Anatolian lands. According to reliable estimates, close to forty percent of the prewar population perished, many in brutal massacres. Armenians call it the first genocide of the twentieth century. Turks speak of an instance of intercommunal warfare and wartime relocation made necessary by the treasonous conduct of their Armenian minority. The voluminous literature on this tragic episode of World War I is characterized by acrimony and distortion in which both sides have simplified a complex historical reality and have resorted to partisan special pleading. The Armenian Massacres in Ottoman Turkey examines the rich historical evidence without political preconceptions. Relying on archival materials as well as eye-witness testimony, Guenter Lewy avoids the sterile "was-it-genocide-or-not" debate and presents a detailed account of what actually happened. These rules and boundaries have enabled the formation of common expressions in religion and in Sufi intellection in particular and in poetry by the influence of Persian literature and they have made it traditional in time. In this context in classical Turkish poetry whose male poets are predominant in quality and quantity patriarchal rhetoric presents an outlook that its frame has been established by common tropes metaphors poetic themes and in short by similar imaginations and ideas. The divans of Lady Mihri died after 1512 Lady Leyla died in 1848 and Lady Seref 1809-1861 have different aesthetic understandings in that context. Layl� Hanim was one of the few Turkish women poets who made a collection of her poems. Lived in Istanbul and died in 1848. Her family was close to the Ottoman Sultanate and Leyl� Hanim witnessed the reign of Mahmud II 1808-1839 and Abd�lmecid I 1839-1861. She is the daughter of Moraliz�de H�mid Efendi. Her mother Had�ce Hanim is the sister of Ke�eciz�de Izzet Molla a notable bureucrat and poet of the times. She has three brothers At�ullah Mehmed Efendi Nurullah Mehmed Efendi and H�lid Efendi who died at a young age. She had financial problems after her father's death and she expressed those in her poems. Some of her poems in the divan mention that her father and brother H�lid Efendi have lived in Bursa for a while. She is educated by Ke�eciz�de Izzet Molla she is quick-witted. She experienced a short marriage which lasted about a week; after the divorce she devoted herself to poetry. Her grave is in Galata Mevlev�hanesi. Born in 1850 in Istanbul to a family of Ottoman aristocrats of Cretan Turkish origins, she was the daughter of Ismail Hakki Pasha, (often called Hekim Ismail Pasha (Ismail Pasha the Doctor). She spent her childhood in the Dolmabahçe Palace, where she took private lessons in French, and later in ancient Greek and theology, when her father was the Ottoman governor of Crete. She married Giritli Sirri Pasha, a high-ranked Ottoman administrator of Cretan origin and a poet of his own right. In line with her husband's appointments, she traveled across Anatolia and the Balkans. She settled in Istanbul after the death of her husband in 1895, and kept in close relations with the Ottoman Palace. In 1873, she mothered a son named Vedat, who became a notable architect. As of 1895, she dedicated herself to poetry and music, in both the Turkish and European schools. She took piano lessons and hosted people of art and science in her mansion. She composed more than fifty songs, the texts of which were written by her contemporary romantic poets. Her songs are strong in technique, emotional and closely faithful to the traditions of Ottoman classical music.

I am sure you will always wish that we had spent more time together and you will probably read it again and again. Undoubtedly you will wish that I was beside you but sadly, we have both been deprived of that joy, my angel. I want to assure you that although I'm reluctantly being dragged away from you my heart will continue to beat with yours. Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Paperback. Foolscap 8vo. (18 x 12 cm). In Ottoman script. 38 p., 1 b/w portrait of Byron. A heavy tear on the back cover. The Prisoner of Chillon is a 392-line narrative poem by Lord Byron. Written in 1816, it chronicles the imprisonment of a Genevois monk, François Bonivard, from 1532 to 1536. After almost 100 years later, this poem was translated into the Ottoman Turkish by Abdullah Cevdet firstly printed in Geneva. Abdullah Cevdet, (1869-1932), was a leading Ottoman/Turkish free-thinker, materialist, and Westernizer. He was born in the town of Arapgir in Ma?muret?ül-Azîz Province of the Ottoman Empire and grew up in a pious, lower-middle-class Muslim household, where he received a strict religious education. His father's stubborn refusal of smallpox vaccination left him pockmarked for life and contributed to his eventual gravitation towards scientism. Abdullah Cevdet graduated from the Military Middle School in Ma'muret'ül-Azîz in 1885, and then entered the Kuleli Military Medical Preparatory School in Istanbul. Three years later, he enrolled in the Royal Military Medical Academy. At this time, he was still very religious; one of his early poetry books from this period includes a glowing "Na't-i Serif," a eulogy for the Prophet Mu?ammad. However, like many other cadets, Abdullah Cevdet's views underwent a drastic transformation in the academy, where he became an ardent scientistic thinker and materialist. Here he produced his first translations from major works of German Vulgärmaterialismus, such as Ludwig Büchner's Kraft und Stoff and Aus Natur und Wissenschaft. He continued to translate from European writers up until his death, including Vittorio Alfieri, Émile Boutmy, Lord (or George Gordon) Byron, Jean-Marie Guyau, Baron (or Paul-Henri Dietrich) d'Holbach, Friedrich von Schiller, William Shakespeare, and François-Marie Arouet (Voltaire). One of his most important contributions to Ottoman and Turkish intellectual debate was the translation of Gustave Le Bon's writings into Turkish and the introduction of his elitist ideas to the Ottoman elite. Abdullah Cevdet also continued to write poetry throughout his life. Although the poems he wrote in the academy bore strong Parnassian influences, his later work was increasingly Symbolist in nature.
