‎New English Paperback. 4to. (27 x 20 cm). Proceedings in English and Turkish. 227 p., color and b/w ills. Cultural encounters in Anatolia in the Medieval period: The Italians in Anatolia in 12th - 15th centuries. Symposium Proceedings.= Orta Çag'da Anadolu'da kültürel karsilasmalar: 12-15. yüzyillarda Anadolu'da Italyanlar. Sempozyum bildirileri. Starting from Spring 2014, VEKAM organizes an international symposium once a year on Cultural Encounters in Anatolia in the Medieval Period. After the Georgian Empire and the Ilkhanids this year's theme is on "Italians in Anatolia during 12th and 15th Centuries" (Istanbul excluded). The symposium held on May 13th, 2016 at the premises of VEKAM in Ankara/ Turkey. "The Mongol victory over the Seljuks in 1243, the Mongol sack of Baghdad in 1258, which led to the commercial rise of Tabriz, and the rapprochement between Cilician Armenia and the Mongols resulted in a shift of the trade route across Anatolia. Ayas in Cilician Armenia replaced Antalya as its Mediterranean outlet. Mongol rule also furthered trade between Tabriz and the Black Sea port of Trebizond. It is along these itineraries that Italian merchants travelled to and from Mongol territories, as illustrated by the journeys of the father and uncle of Marco Polo and of Marco himself in the second half of the 13th Century. At Ayas on the shore of Cilicia Venice received trading privileges in 1261, well after Genoa's first treaty with the Armenian kingdom (1201). The Venetian element in Ayas' foreign merchant community grew with the general increase in the intensity of trade and with the inception of the state galley run or incanto. But international trading activity at Ayas, and the use of the tracks to Sivas, seems to have been cut short by the Mamluks' acquisition of the port in 1337...".‎

‎Apologies for the past: Two cases from Turkey.‎

‎New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 156 p. Apologies for the past: Two cases from Turkey. This book explores the issue of collective apology, and its potential to function as a symbolic form of restitution that publicly addresses and acknowledges the grievances faced by victimized groups. It explores two cases of collective apology in Turkey, "I Apologize" online signature campaign in 2008, and an apology speech carried out by a state official on the Dersim massacre in 2011. Both events raised significant public debate in Turkish society. Taking these two recent cases of collective apology and looking at them through the lens of existing scholarship on collective apology, this thesis explores the answers to a set of questions; on the format, wording and enactment of the apologies and their dealing with the issues of responsibility, and reconciliation.‎

‎Death in Istanbul: Death and its rituals in Ottoman Islamic culture.‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 23 cm). In English. 299, [1] p., color and b/w ills. Death in Istanbul: Death and its rituals in Ottoman Islamic culture. The idea of an exhibition/catalogue on death may not sound very pleasant. After all, it is only natural to experience some discomfort, displeasure, anxiety, even disgust in the face of a phenomenon that may summon painful memories and provoke fears about the future. Yet, there is no denying that death, once tamed as an abstract notion or concept, can become a powerful tool for social analysis. It can thus become a fascinating area of study, likely to reveal much about the culture, mentalities and social structure of a given society. This is what this exhibition and its catalogue hope to attain. Their objective is to try to pinpoint, through hopefully representative examples, the ways in which death has been perceived by the Muslim population of Ottoman Istanbul throughout five centuries of existence, and to understand the role it may have played in the life of the Imperial capital." To maintain a certain consistency, this publication has been limited to the period from 1453 to 1922 and deals uniquely with the culture and mentalities of the Muslim population within the boundaries of the Ottoman capital, Istanbul. Underlying the work is the notion of change in Ottoman death culture over this five-century period with a particular emphasis on the significant transformations which occurred in the 19th century. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach to balance the varying viewpoints on death contributed by ethnography, urban history, anthropology, political history and philology, this work is designed as a collection of case studies regrouped under a number of general headings, including amongst others, Death and the City, Empire and Death, the Birth of the Ottoman Tombstone, Suicide, Dealing with Death, Women, Aspects of Modernity, and State, Nation and Death.‎

‎New New Turkish Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Turkish. [xix], 271 p., 51 numerous plates of Ottoman documents and 15 color and b/w photographic plates. Donanma-yi Osmanî Muavenet-i Milliye Cemiyeti. The declaration of the Second Constitutional Monarchy on July 23, 1908 brought a great deal of vitality to social life. As instinctive necessity of the freedom regime, societies and associations have been established all over the country and these societies have become an integral part of social life. One of the societies established during this period is the Navy-Osmaniye Muavenet-i Milliye Cemiyeti. Founded in Istanbul on 19 July, 1909 in order to provide financial support to the Ottoman Navy, this Society became legitimate by acquiring legitimacy through the "Law of Societies" issued on August 16, 1909. The Society, founded by volunteers, was eventually supported by the state, established close relations with the Union and Progress, and gained qualifications as a semi-official organization. Having completed its organisation process within the country in a short period of time, the Society carried out many cultural, social and economic activities that would generate income. One of the most important sources of income of The Society which had a share in the purchase of many war ships with these activities was the 'Agricultural Activities'. The Naval Society, which regarded it as a national duty to free the nation by lifting the troubles of the war years, and to meet the essential needs of the Turkish army and the farmers, initiated an agricultural campaign in the country. In this study the historical reasons that made the the foundation of the Ottoman Naval Society an obligation and its establishment were included.‎

‎New Turkish Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 16 cm). In Turkish. 284 p., color ills. Akdeniz'in en büyük antik tersanesi Dana Adasi. "... The work at and around Dana Island (Pityoussa / Pityussa) yielded very important results with regards to archaeology. There is a modern lighthouse to warn seafarers about the shoal just off shore in the west. This shoal is about 50 cm. below the water surface and not visible in stormy weather, thus posing a great threat for seafarers. To the south-east of the shoal is a recently sunken modern ship at a depth of 25-35 m. covering a wide area at the bottom. Based on numerous wreck remains around the shoal, it is thought that this modern shipwreck currently conceals many other archaeological remains. In the vicinity of the lighthouse are numerous amphorae on the bottom and buried underneath the sand. The most significant find from this region is an iron ram used on ancient warships. Detailed underwater exploration around the island attested wrecks along the east, south and west coasts as well as anchors datable to the Bronze and Iron Ages and the Roman and East Roman periods. The most important outcome is the identification of structural remains under water by the coast on the mainland side of the island. Some of the remains belong to walls fallen because of an earthquake on the land. Some others are beaching sites hewn into rocks in the water (or on land but then submerged as the water levels rose)"... ‎From coexistence to conflict Turkish and Greek relations in an age of Turmoil, (1821-1922).‎

‎New English Paperback. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In English. 285 p. This book analyzes the Turkish and Greek narratives of shared Turkish-Greek history by focusing on the "long nineteenth century", which was a period of turmoil for both societies. The four centuries of Ottoman rule over the Greek community, the Greek rebellion/war of independence, emergence of an independent Greek state, Ottoman reforms with regard to millet system, joint efforts of some Turkish and Greek communities for the re-promulgation of the Ottoman Constitution, increasing tensions between the Committee of Union and Progress and the Greek community and finally the transformation from coexistence to conflict during and after the World War I are covered briefly with the conflicting lenses of Turkish and Greek historiography. The book also attracts attention to Greek claims for a Greek Genocide by the Ottoman/Turkish authorities during and after the World War I and questions whether inter-communal clashes in Western and Northern Anatolia in this period can be considered as genocide in accordance with international law.‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original three autograph letters. 1+1+1 p. 'Ismail Pirge Biçak, Destere ve Tarak Imal ve Satis Yeri' letterhead. Signed by Ismail Pirge, who was the most important Turkish knife and pocketknife craftsman and manufacturer in Bursa city, third of six generations. They are two kind request letters. Written to Osman Bey. Dated 1948. In Ottoman script. One is written by a pencil, another is by a fountain pen with a black ink. Between the years 1877-1878 the Ottoman - Russian War (93 Harbi) after the Turks from the Balkans migrated to Anatolia, there was also a knife master Ismail Bey. In 1879, he started to work in Yahya Usta's shop (Yesilyayla Biçakçisi) in Okçular Çarsisi (one of famous bazaar which means 'Archery Bazaar' in Bursa city which still has touristic crafts) and started to produce knives and agricultural tools. When he died at a young age in 1885, his son Mehmet (Pirge) continued to do the affairs of Ismail Usta. The art of knives was thus passed on from father to son. ‎Very Good English Original color photograph, hand-colored. 4to. (26 x 20 cm). A portrait. Signed and inscribed as 'To my dear uncle and mother, Fatma Sultana, New York, August 1940'. Sabia Sultan was born on 2 April 1894 in her father's palace in Ortaköy. Her mother was Nazikeda Kadin, daughter of Hasan Marshan and Fatma Horecan Aredba. She was the third daughter born to her father and mother. She had two sisters, Fenire Sultan, six years elder than her, and Ulviye Sultan, one year elder than her. When her father asecended the throne in 1918, Sabiha was still unmarried, but had several admirers. Those who knew her always said that she was not like the other women of the Ottoman family. "Sabiha Sultan was different", said the Turkish poet Yahya Kemal. Her first suiter is thought to be Rauf Orbay. He was followed by Mahmud Kemal Pasha. Another was Fuad Bey of the Babanzade clan. Captain Safvet Arikan, Lieutinant Suphi Bey from Damascus were other suitors, but none of them were accepted. Her betrothal to Ahmad Shah Qajar, the last ruling member of the Qajar dynasty and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was forfeited in favor of her second cousin Sehzade Ömer Faruk thus missing her chance of becoming the first "First Lady" of the nascent Turkish Republic. Sabiha and Sehzade Ömer Faruk, the son of Abdulmejid II, the last Caliph of the Ottoman Caliphate and Sehsuvar Hanim, were in love with each other. When Abdulmejid asked Sabiha's hand in marriage for his son, Mehmed flatly refused as there was no such thing as a marriage between cousins. Sehsuvar Hanim, the prince's mother called on Nazikeda, and succeeded in convincing her. The marriage took place on 5 December 1919, in the pavilion of the sacred relics, Topkapi Palace. The marriage was performed by Seyhülislam Hayrizade Ibrahim Efendi. Sabiha Sultan's deputy was Baskatip Ali Fuad Bey, and Ömer Faruk's deputy was Ömer Yaver Pasha. The wedding reception took place four months later on 29 April 1920 at the Yildiz Palace. The couple were given the Nisantasi Palace as their residence. Fatma Neslisah Osmanoglu was a granddaughter of the last Ottoman Caliph Abdulmejid II and his first wife, Sehsuvar Hanim and granddaughter of the last Ottoman Sultan Mehmed VI and his first wife, Nazikeda Kadin. She was the daughter of Sehzade Ömer Faruk (1898-1969/1971) and his first wife and cousin Sabiha Sultan (1894-1971). Extremely rare.‎

T. stand für die Hinwendung Graubündens zur Schweiz und die Aufgabe der Bündner Ansprüche auf das Veltlin; er hatte massgebenden Anteil an der Kantonsverfassung von 1814/20. [L'Arlesienne]. Prep. by Kemal Emin [Bara], (1876-1957). Yeni Sahne Külliyati: 1. L'Arlésienne is a short story, written by Alphonse Daudet and first published in his collection Letters From My Windmill (Lettres de mon moulin) in 1869. On a commission from Léon Carvalho, the author transformed the story in 1872 into a play in three acts and five tableaux with music and chorus. Georges Bizet wrote incidental music for the play's first production on 1 October 1872, at the Vaudeville Theatre (now the Gaumont). The play was not successful and closed after only 21 performances. The music score was later used for two suites of the same name, the first established by Bizet himself in November 1872, the second after Bizet's 1875 death, by Ernest Guiraud. Another play was originally scheduled for the night of 1 October 1872, but it was withdrawn by the censors at the last minute and L'Arlésienne was substituted. Many of the patrons were less than happy with this change. Daudet's play formed the basis of the Italian opera L'arlesiana (1897), text by Leopoldo Marenco, music by Francesco Cilea. ‎ZIYA GÖKALP, (1876-1924), (Turkish sociologist, writer, poet, and political activist).‎

‎Altin isik.‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) In modern very aesthetic full leather bdg. Demy 8vo. (22 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script. 197, [2], [1] p. Altin isik. Ziya Gökalp, whose real name is Mehmet Ziya was born on March 23,1876 in Diyarbair. Ziya Gökalp started his education in Diyarbakir, and moved to Istanbul in 1895 to attend the school for veterinary medicine. During this stage of his life, he met important political figures of the era such as Ibrahim Temo and Ishak Sukûti. He was much influenced by the Young Turks movement and joined the political reform movement Ittihat ve Terakki (Committee of Union and Progress). He was arrested in 1898 because of his dissident activities and spent a year in prison. After his release, he was sent to exile to Diyarbakir where he worked on a minor governmental assignments. After the declaration of the second constitutional monarchy, he established a branch of Ittihat ve Terakki in Diyarbakir, and became its representative. He published the Peyman newspaper. In 1909, he attended the Ittihat ve Terakki Congress held in Thessalonica as the Diyarbakir delegate. The next year, he was elected member to the central administrative council of this organization in Thessalonica. He taught sociology courses in Ittihat Terakki's school, which he had helped establish in 1910. In the mean time, he also published the Genç Kalemler periodical. In 1912, he was elected as a representative of Ergani Maden to the Meclis-i Mebusan (Parliament), and he moved to Istanbul. He was also one of the founders of the association Türk Ocagi (The Turkish Hearth). He wrote about nationalism and Turkish nationalism in the publication of this association Turk Yurdu, and in many other publications such as Halka Dogru, Islam Mecmuasi, Milli Tetebbular Mecmuasi, Iktisadiyat Mecmuasi, Içtimaiyat Mecmuasi and Yeni Mecmua. In the mean time, he taught sociology at the Darülfünun-u Osmani (Istanbul University). During the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, Ziya Gökalp sought to fashion a new national identity. In essence, his philosophy consisted of the effort of synthesizing the ethical and cultural values native to Turkish society, and certain values borrowed from the west. He summarized this approach as 'becoming Turkish, Muslim, and modern', and he took the cultural component from Turkish nationalism, and the ethical component from Islam. Gokalp defended that the constructive element of international culture were national cultures and he gave priority to folk literature over court literature. He believed in the importance of positive sciences, which had made the technological and scientific development of the West possible and considered religion as an auxiliary element on the way to reach religious and social unity. His social model was influenced by Emile Durkheim's theoretical concept of 'solidarism'. He opted for this model because unlike liberalism, which was based on the individual, and Marxism, which was based on class struggle, solidarism considered vocational organizations as the essential social unit. He wrote countless articles explaining his social and political views, and he systematized the concept of Turkish nationalism. He played an important role in the establishment and the development of Turkish national literature.
