‎Summary This volume aims at filling a major gap in international literature concerning the knowledge of the Latin language and literature by Post-Byzantine scholars from the fifteenth to the nineteenth centuries. Most of them, immigrants to the West after the Fall of Byzantium, harmoniously integrated into their host countries, practiced and perfected their knowledge of the Latin language and literature, excelled in arts and letters and, in many cases, managed to obtain civil, political and clerical offices. They wrote original poetic and prose works in Latin, for literary, scholarly and/or political purposes. They also translated Greek texts into Latin, and vice versa. The contributors to this volume explore the multifaceted aspects of the knowledge of the Latin language and literature by these scholars. Among the many issues addressed in the volume are: the reasons that urged Post-Byzantine scholars to compose Latin works and disseminate Ancient Greek works to the West and Latin texts to the East, their audience, the fate of their projects, and their relations among them and with Western scholars. In the contents of the volume one can find well known Post-Byzantine scholars such as Bessarion or Isidore of Kiev, as well as lesser known authors like Ioannis Gemistos, Nikolaos Sekoundinos and others. ‎Summary Income integration based on the peasants' engagement in non-agrarian sectors is a prominent and widespread feature in the history of the European countryside. While listing a multitude of activities outside the narrow scope of farm management aimed at self-consumption, prevailing interpretations emphasize how survival was the goal of peasant economies and societies. ‎Summary In the essays collected in this volume, leading scholars from Croatia, the Czech Republic, and Poland, as well musicologists from Western Europe, take on the challenge of fulfilling a historiographical and cultural gap in music history by restoring the place of the countries of Central Europe that, as Milan Kundera put it succinctly, 'vanished from the map of the West'. The opportunity to consider 'other' renaissances enlarges the historiographical perspectives of Renaissance musicology, going beyond the traditional focus on the Franco-Flemish or Franco-Italian axis, and opens new scenarios on unexplored Renaissance music. What was it that happened on a cultural and musical level on the Dalmatian coast - influenced by the economic boost of a powerful Venice? The same question emerges when considering Habsburg Prague and its renewed, central role in the European political theatre, and as a reaffirmed capital that inaugurated a period of economic and cultural renaissance for the Bohemian Kingdom. How did the secularization process evolve in these territories, caught between the religion wars following the Counter-Reformation in the West, and the Turkish threat on the East? What peculiar features does the musical production of these territories reveal? The preference accorded to the expression Renaissance Music is not to be intended as a shortcut. The intention of the contributing scholars is to focus on, and to handle independently, the endogenous cultural production without considering it only as a phenomenon of importation or as the mere imitation of an existing model. In this way, borders reveal a dialectical function in the context of musical Humanism, revealing here, maybe for the first time, an authentic European dimension. EDITION ORIGINALE RARE de la biographie de celui qui s'illustra contre les Turcs dans la défense de Rhodes en 1480, Pierre d'AUBUSSON ( 1423-1503 ) entra à 13 ans au service de l'empereur SIGISMOND, en guerre avec le sultan AMURAT II. A son retour de Hongrie, il servit LOUIS XI. Puis il entra dans l'ordre des chevaliers de Rhodes. En 1480, 100 000 soldats turcs débarquèrent sur l'île, mais l'armée de MAHOMET II dut se retirer après de très lourdes pertes. Le pape décerna à d'AUBUSSON les titres de défenseur de la chrétienté et de bouclier de l'Eglise puis fut nommé cardinal en 1489. [Cioranescu, 17e s., n° 15265]. Reliure anciennement restaurée, rousseurs éparses et mouillures claires. Bon exemplaire.‎
