The recent history of the Rhodes and Kos Turks: The silent cry rising in the Aegean Sea.
New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 171 p., ills. The recent history of the Rhodes and Kos Turks. The silent cry rising in the Aegean Sea. There is a Turkish population of about 6,000 people who live in the Dodecanese Islands, mainly Rhodes and Kos. Current problems of Moslem Turks living in the Dodecanese include expressing their Turkish identity freely, having a voice in the administration of the foundations, reativating the functions of the Muftiate, restarting turkish language and religion courses in schools, reopening mosques to religious services and restoring the civil rights and citizenshipstatus of the Dodecanese Turks who had been previously deprived of Greek citizenship. This book aims to investigate through a historical perspective the past and present social and economic status of the island Turks living in Rhodes, Kos and Turkey as well as recording and preserving legends, folk dances, elegies and life stories that are not recorded by documented historiography. The book will also provide the means for communicating the problems of Rhodes and Kos turks in recent history and at persent to the turkish and international public opinion, but especially to the Greek public opinion. In this respect, it also includes some suggestions for the establishment of a long-lasting friendship in Turkish-Greek relations.

HALID ZIYA USAKLIGIL, (1865-1945).
Saray ve ötesi. Son hatiralar. 3 volumes set.
Very Good Turkish Modern aesthetic cloth bdg. Very good+. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Turkish. [xiv], 1104, [17] p. B/w ills. Halit Ziya Usakligil was born in Istanbul in 1865. He went to primary school and then attended the secondary school Fatih Rustiyesi in the same city. His family moved to Izmir in 1879. He completed his secondary education in Izmir attending the school which now is known as Izmir Atatürk Lisesi. He later attended a Christian school to learn French where he completed his first translation works. Usakligil founded the newspaper Hizmet in 1886. After 1896 his works were published in the Turkish literary journal Servet-i Fünun, known for its adoption of European literary styles. When his novel Kirik Hayatlar (Broken Lives) was censored by the Ottoman Regime in 1901, he stopped publishing novels. Broken Lives could only be published in 1923 after the establishment of modern Turkey. Usakligil's early style is based closely on French Romanticism and most of his novels deal with unfulfilled love. His work is distinguished from contemporary Turkish literature by its more concrete form and creates its own artistic language through the use of Persian and Arabic loanwords. In his later years the writer moved to the village of San Stefano near Istanbul. In 1926, when a new law imposed to give a Turkish name to each community, he suggested to give to the village its present name of Yesilköy (literally: "Green Village"). Memoirs of Usakligil.

Osmanli Imparatorlugu'nun Araplari, (1516-1918). Sosyal ve kültürel bir tarih. [= The Arabs of the Ottoman Empire, 1516-1918: A social and cultural history]. Translated by Feray Coskun.
New Turkish Paperback. Large demy 8vo. (23 x 14 cm). In Turkish. 272 p. Osmanli Imparatorlugu'nun Araplari, (1516-1918). Sosyal ve kültürel bir tarih. Turkish Edition of Masters' 'The Arabs of the Ottoman Empire, 1516-1918: A social and cultural history'. The Ottomans ruled much of the Arab World for four centuries. Bruce Masters's work surveys this period, emphasizing the cultural and social changes that occurred against the backdrop of the political realities that Arabs experienced as subjects of the Ottoman sultans. The persistence of Ottoman rule over a vast area for several centuries required that some Arabs collaborate in the imperial enterprise. Masters highlights the role of two social classes that made the empire successful: the Sunni Muslim religious scholars, the ulama, and the urban notables, the acyan. Both groups identified with the Ottoman sultanate and were its firmest backers, although for different reasons. The ulama legitimated the Ottoman state as a righteous Muslim sultanate, while the acyan emerged as the dominant political and economic class in most Arab cities due to their connections to the regime. Together, the two helped to maintain the empire.

Sürekli Hoard. Mardin, the sage of Mesopotamia, shines a light on history.= Sürekli Definesi. Mezopotamya'nin bilge sehri Mardin'den tarihi aydinlatan isik.
New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (30 x 25 cm). In English and Turkish. [ii], 197, [12] p., color and b/w ills. 1000 copies were printed. Sürekli Hoard. Mardin, the sage of Mesopotamia, shines a light on history.= Sürekli Definesi. Mezopotamya'nin bilge sehri Mardin'den tarihi aydinlatan isik. Mardin, the luminary of Mesopotamia is a mystical city. It is an urban center that always manages to imbue a sense of mystery, both to those who are first time visitors and those who were born and raised here. Its architecture, historical legacy, original identity, natural beauty, and the deep memory and experiences it has accrued throughout its long history all combine to form an'above-ground royal treasury'. The layers of the city are accumulations of each of its memories. The footprints of ancient caravans, the rich legacy of cultures of its array of societies and the cacophony of sounds emanating from its religious ceremonies have created a tumulus-like city, both above and below-ground. It is certain that one and all are stirred by the visible remnants of the city. But this in itself is not all that affects us, for the city's 3000-year long history has also bequeathed us with an immensely rich cultural heritage. It is the accumulation of these lasting values that form Mardin's legacy to mankind. Sürekli Definesi (The lasting treasure trove) describes a human treasure whose valuable exceeds even that of gold. The book integrates both the above and below-ground faces of the treasures of Mardin, and is also important as a rich source of knowledge that sheds light on the city's past.
