‎Les Français du Levant dans la tourmente de la Révolution, (1789-1814). Les echelles de la Mer Egée.‎

‎New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English.

‎New Turkish Original bdg. HC. Reprint Edition of 1900. Folio. (32 x 25 cm). In Turkish and Ottoman script. 110 p., 56 unnumbered plates. Tebrîknâme-i Millî: Cülus-i Meyamin Me'nus-i Hilâfetpenah-i A'zâmin Yirmi Besinci Devr-i Sene-i Kudsîsi. Preface by Vahdettin Engin. Trasncription by Durmus Kandira. Sultan II. Abdulhamid's expenditures on his personal budget from September 1, 1876 to September 1, 1900 were published in book form by Tahir Bey, monuments which were restored, the state policies and activities of the period were presented in the name of the Ottoman subjects. The Sultan Abdülhamid gives many important clues about the policies towards the understanding of the Ottoman Sultan and the Islamic Caliphate when he examined many of the new and valuable information about Sultan Abdülhamid II and the unique visual materials of the revolution.‎

‎MADELINE C. ZILFI.‎

‎Osmanli Imparatorlugu'nda kölelik ve kadinlar, (1700-1840). [= Women and slavery in the late Ottoman Empire]. Translated by Ebru Kiliç.‎

‎New Turkish Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). Edition in Turkish. [xvii], [1], 389 p., b/w ills. Osmanli Imparatorlugu'nda kölelik ve kadinlar, (1700-1840). [= Women and slavery in the late Ottoman Empire]. Translated by Ebru Kiliç. Turkish Eition of Zilfi's 'Women and slavery in the late Ottoman Empire'. Madeline C. Zilfi's latest book examines gender politics through slavery and social regulation in the Ottoman Empire. In a challenge to prevailing notions, her research shows that throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries female slavery was not only central to Ottoman practice, but a critical component of imperial governance and elite social reproduction. As Zilfi illustrates through her graphic accounts of the humiliations and sufferings endured by these women at the hands of their owners, Ottoman slavery was often as cruel as its Western counterpart. The book focuses on the experience of slavery in the Ottoman capital of Istanbul, also using comparative data from Egypt and North Africa to illustrate the regional diversity and local dynamics that were the hallmarks of slavery in the Middle East during the early modern era. This is an articulate and informed account that sets more general debates on women and slavery in the Ottoman context.‎

Jerusalem in photographs from past to present.= Fotograflarla dünden bugüne Kudüs. Photographs (old); IRCICA archives. Photographs (new); Khaled Zaghari. Project managers; Halit Eren, Sefer Turan. This album was published within the framework of the 40th anniversary commemoration of the OIC, which has the problem of al-Quds and Palestine as its foremost cause. Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, Secretary General of the OIC, wrote the Foreword. As he mentions, preservation of the multicultural character of the city with due respect of the populations and the shrines of each faith is an indispensable part of any acceptable solution of the problem. This character is well reflected in the authentic photographs in the album. Due to its special importance, al-Quds/Jerusalem was visited and described by many travelers. Then, the region became the first place of interest of the pioneer photographers. The Ottoman Palace was among the first in the world to acquire photographs of the region. The Yildiz photograph collection which was formed during the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II contains a large number of them. The album contains the reproductions of 405 photographs gathered from IRCICA's archive comprising the Yildiz Photograph Albums and several other collections. A very heavy volume. Extra shipping fee will be able to request.‎

‎Al-Farabi: A civilization philosopher.‎

‎New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In English. 108 p. Al-Farabi: A civilization philosopher. Al-Farabi's philosophical thinking was nourished in the heritage of the Arabic Aristotelian teachings of 10th-century Baghdad. His great service to Islam was to take the Greek heritage, as it had become known to the Arabs, and show how it could be used to answer questions with which Muslims were struggling. To al-Farabi, philosophy had come to an end in other parts of the world but had a chance for new life in Islam. Islam as a religion, however, was of itself not sufficient for the needs of a philosopher. He saw human reason as being superior to revelation. Religion provided truth in a symbolic form to non-philosophers, who were not able to apprehend it in its purer forms. The major part of al-Farabi's writings were directed to the problem of the correct ordering of the state. Just as God rules the universe, so should the philosopher, as the most perfect kind of man, rule the state; he thus relates the political upheavals of his time to the divorce of the philosopher from government.‎

‎Spolia reincarnated: Afterlives of objects, materials, and spaces in Anatolia from antiquity to the Ottoman era. 10th International ANAMED Annual Symposium.‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). In English. 392 p., ills. Spolia reincarnated: Afterlives of objects, materials, and spaces in Anatolia from antiquity to the Ottoman era. 10th International ANAMED Annual Symposium. At the cutting edge of spolia studies, the collected essays in this volume explore diverse forms and types of reuse in Anatolia over centuries through a cross-cultural lens. Gathered from the joining of disciplines archaeology, art history, and the history of architecture and landscapean exceptional array of examples is presented, including architectural elements and decoration, sculpture and statuary, space and buildings, and textiles and other objects. Most significantly, this ground-breaking work reveals how objects, materials, and spaces attained new meanings in their afterlives through various modes of reuse. The scholarly contributions published here stem from the Tenth International ANAMED Annual Symposium "Spolia Reincarnated: Second Life of Spaces, Materials, Objects in Anatolia from Antiquity to the Ottoman Period" held at Istanbul's Koç University Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations (ANAMED) in December 2015. This unique conference marked ANAMED's tenth anniversary and brought together many prominent scholars and former research center fellows, including the volume's editors.‎

‎Classic construction details of Ottoman monumental architecture.= Osmanli anit mimarisinde klasik yapi detaylari.‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (29 x 20 cm). In English and Turkish. 269 p., b/w plates. Classic construction details of Ottoman monumental architecture.= Osmanli anit mimarisinde klasik yapi detaylari. Enlarged Sixth Edition. A whole is made up of details. In traditional architecture a detail is developed over time through trial and error. When it is believed to have been ?perfected', however, it need no longer change. Close inspection will reveal that most traditional details of the same type have many similarities, even when produced in diffe-rent regions at different times. This is one of the most characte-ristic aspects of traditional architecture, and is the exact opposite of our understanding of architecture today. One must strive to understand the working principle of a detail-how and why it has evolved to function so well, and, often, so beautifully. An architect capable of this understanding has mastered that detail and its utility, and can help its further evolution in the context of contemporary conditions of construction. This book, which is the outcome of 60 years of professional experience, is useful primarily for architects, preservationists and students in these fields. Yet this book can also address a much greater audience because it is the first to compile Ottoman classical details in a single volume. Furthermore, some of the buildings which these details are part of have fallen into ruins and others have lost their authenticity due to faulty interventions. These may be the only records of their details. If this book can attract attention to these beautiful details and further an understanding of their working principles it would have accomplished its purpose. Perfection lies in the details.‎
