‎Bel ouvrage du naturaliste Pierre Belon (1517-1564). Cet ouvrage est le fruit du voyage que l’auteur fit au Levant à partir de 1547. Étant passé par Genève puis Venise, il visita les îles grecques avant d’arriver à Constantinople en août 1547. Il repartit en direction de l’Égypte puis remonta vers la Palestine, visita Jérusalem, traversa Damas, Baalbek, Homs, Hama, Ma’arrat al-Nu’man et séjourna à Alep en décembre 1547. Il retourna à Constantinople en mai 1548 en passant par Antioche, Adana et Bursa. Il composa cet ouvrage à son retour, faisant état de la faune et de la flore mais également des us et coutumes des régions traversées. L’ouvrage parut pour la première fois en 1553 ; il est divisé en 3 livres : le premier porte sur le voyage de Belon jusqu’à Constantinople, dans le second l’auteur raconte son périple en Égypte et en Syrie et le troisième traite de la religion, des us et coutumes des turcs, et du voyage d’Achara en Asie mineure jusqu’à Constantinople. Cette édition comprend un titre particulier pour chaque partie. Elle est illustrée d’un bel encadrement sur le titre, d’un portrait de l’auteur, de nombreuses figures sur bois dont des plantes, des animaux, parmi lesquels une girafe, des oiseaux, des costumes, une vue d’Alexandrie.
