ADEN; YEMEN.
RAF Khormaksar / JARIC operational documents relating to punitive expeditions against dissident Bedouin tribes in the Aden Protectorate and the Yemen Frontier War 1955-59.
Aden & Yemen: 1950s. Into the remote places" - policing tribal disturbances in the Arabian Peninsula from the air Fascinating archive of rare documents and maps concerning Royal Air Force punitive operations against dissident Bedouin tribes in the Aden Protectorate and against Yemen around the time of the Suez Crisis an extension of imperial policing by the RAF advanced by Churchill in the 1920s "the function of two tensions" the demobilisation of British forces following the Great War and the "new responsibilities in the Middle East and Africa" Longoria p. 10. In 1839 Britain claimed Aden as a naval base along its East India route and its importance grew with the opening of the Suez Canal. Treaties were made with local tribes offering protection for loyalty. As the Aden Protectorate grew its ground forces became stretched. Thus in 1928 the RAF were deployed to police more remote areas an economical and flexible solution and 35 air strips were constructed giving access to government military and intelligence personnel. The main operational base was RAF Khormaksar Station its motto "Into the Remote Places" from where they began to deal with the threat from Yemen which after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire was supporting the Protectorate's dissident tribes and seeking to gain territory. RAF 8 Squadron flew deep into Yemen dropping leaflets demanding the withdrawal of Imam Yahya's troops conducted reconnaissance and struck targets in a demonstration of strength and reach. This was partially successful resulting in the Anglo-Yemen Treaty of Friendship 1934. The RAF then focused on responding to raids along trade routes punitive expeditions to honour treaty obligations or enforce the payment of taxes surveying and the delivery of mail and aid. By the mid-1950s Khormaksar was the RAF's busiest base. Britain suffered its first serious reverse in 1954-55 at the hands of the Ahl Shams or Shamsi tribe and was forced to abandon its fort at Robat. In 1956 the Suez Crisis stirred unrest in western Aden with Yemeni troops massing on the border. British prestige had taken a serious hit and with the loss of Suez and Palestine Aden's importance grew: "In the aftermath of the Suez humiliation Yemen became the frontline of the war against radical nationalism in the Middle East" Spencer Mawby British Policy in Aden and the Protectorates 1955-67: Last Outpost of a Middle East Empire 2005 p. 46. During 1955-57 the British responded with air attacks and provoked tribal disturbances in Yemen. They were further stretched when the Sultan of Oman called for support in 1957. In 1958-59 the British escalated the frontier war into Yemen seeking to end arms supplies to dissidents. During 1959-62 Yemen's support for dissidents declined and Britain transformed the Protectorates into a self-governing Federation with Aden Colony joining in 1963. The items offered here relate to this highly volatile period 1955-59. The Joint Air Reconnaissance Intelligence Centre JARIC produced maps essential to these operations. It was a low-profile unit originating out of covert MI6 work before the Second World War and started life as the Photographic Development Unit MI4 in 1940 regularised as the Joint Air Photographic Intelligence Centre in 1947 and renamed JARIC in 1953 when it began using radar scope photography. Its personnel were drawn from the three branches of the armed services and the Civil Service. Headquartered at RAF Brampton from 1956 it had offices for the Middle East at Cyprus until 1975 with a Detachment at Aden and Far East. Its photos were taken from high flying Canberra PR9 and Victor bombers adapted to carry huge amounts of film which JARIC processed on an industrial scale. The archive comprises: 1 Secret instructions - Air Liaison Officer's copy 1956 ii 12 JARIC ME Aden Detachment maps some annotated and used in action 1955-57 iii Aden Protectorate Provisional Sketch Map Sheet No. 2 - Ahwar 1947 / 1955 / Frontier War annotations c. 1956 1959 iv Middle East Air Force RAF memo for trialling new oxygen masks 1955 v 3 RAF pilot log cards 1 of which filled in c. 1955 vi Wall shield: Royal Air Force Station Khormaksar motto: "Into the Remote Places" n. d. post 1952 Further details are available on request. A rare opportunity to acquire a fine collection of material relating to this crucial period of British involvement in the Middle East; far from being a grouping of sterile material this is an archive of real immediacy bearing all the hallmarks of active service. Small archive of maps memos and other documentation as detailed above. General signs of handling commensurate with active service use but overall very good. Major Michael A. Longoria "A Historical View of Air Policing Doctrine: Lessons from the British Experience Between the Wars 1919-1939" School of Advanced Airpower Studies May 1992. unknown
