The second volume has two maps, one plate, and two plans (All are folded and huge sizes). The first map is one of the most attractive views of Jerusalem titled 'Novæ Ierosolymæ et Locorvm Circvmiacentivm Accvrata Imago'. Other is depicting attractively 'Montis Calvariæ' [i.e. Calvary, or Golgotha] which was, according to the canonical Gospels, a site immediately outside Jerusalem's walls where Jesus was crucified, as well as Bethlehem and Resurrection Temple's plans. Quaresmio was a writer and Orientalist of the seventeenth century. His father was the noble Alberto Quaresmi and his mother Laura Papa. At an early age, he was enrolled among the Franciscan Observantines at Mantua. For many years he held the chairs of philosophy, theology, and canon law, and became successively guardian, custos, and minister of his province. His long apostolate in the East and the magnificent works he has left us have secured Quaresmius worldwide fame, especially among earlier historians, Biblical scholars, and Orientalists. On 3 March 1616, he went to Jerusalem, where he became Guardian and Vice-Commissary Apostolic of Aleppo in Syria (1616-8), and Superior and Commissary Apostolic of the East (1618-9). During this period he was twice imprisoned by the Turks. In 1620 he returned to Europe, but in 1625 was back in Jerusalem, whence the following year he addressed from the Holy Sepulchre an appeal to Philip IV of Spain, inviting him to reconquer the Holy Land, and at the same time dedicating to him his work, "Hierosolymæ afflictæ". Between 1616 and 1626 he wrote his classical work, "Elucidatio terræ Sanctæ", adjudged by the learned a monumental contribution to history, geography, archæology, Biblical and moral science. During 1627-9 he was at Aleppo as papal commissary and as vicar-patriarch for the Chaldeans and Maronites of Syria and Mesopotamia. In 1629 he went to Italy to render an account to the Holy See of the state of the Eastern Churches; he then returned to the East, but how long he remained is not known. Meanwhile, he journeyed through Egypt and Sinai, the Holy Land, Syria, Mesopotamia, Cyprus, Rodi, Constantinople, and a large part of Asia Minor; he also visited Germany, France, Belgium, and Holland. In 1637 he was a guardian of S. Angelo (Milan), wherein 1643 he completed his other great work on the Passion of Christ. Original 1/3 black leather bdg. Six raised bands to spine. Marbled endpapers. Gilt title on spine and volume numbers. Folio. (38 x 28 cm). In Latin. 2 volumes set: (xxviii, [8], 761 p.; 893 p., 6 engraved maps and plans (5 folded)).

In appendice “Lettera agli ebrei italiani”. Autori: Franco Fortini. Curatori: Centro studi Franco Fortini.

FREDERICH SIEGMUNG GEORG FREIHERR KRESS von KRESSENSTEIN, (Baron), (1870-1948).
Türklerle beraber Süveys Kanalina. Translated by Mazhar Besim Özalpsan.
Very Good Turkish Modern cloth bdg. 4to. (27 x 20 m). In Turkish. 201 p., 7 military plans in the end-pocket (no missing). Türklerle beraber Süveys Kanalina. Translated by Mazhar Besim Özalpsan. Scarce First Edition. Only one copy located in OCLC: 69392693 (Bogaziçi University Library). Kress von Kressenstein was a German general from Nuremberg. He was a member of the group of German officers who assisted in the direction of the Ottoman Army during World War I. Kress von Kressenstein was part of the military mission of Otto Liman von Sanders to the Ottoman Empire, which arrived shortly before World War I broke out. Kress came from a patrician family in Nuremberg. His father, Georg Kress von Kressenstein (1840-1911), was a high court judge. Kress von Kressenstein joined the Bavarian army as an ensign in the artillery in 1888. In Palestine during the WW 1, Kress joined Djemal Pasha's army in Palestine as a military engineer and was later chief of staff. Djemal Pasha was given the job by the Turkish leader Enver Pasha of capturing or disabling the Suez Canal. This effort is called the First Suez Offensive, and it occurred in January 1915. Kress von Kressenstein was responsible for creating special boats for crossing the canal (pontoons) as well as organizing the crossing of the Sinai desert. While the desert was crossed with little loss of life, the British were aware of their approach and their attack on the Suez came as no surprise to the defenders. The Ottoman forces were repulsed easily and after two days of fighting, they retreated. Kress von Kressenstein's special pontoons were never used. More than a year passed when the Ottomans tried a second attack on the Suez. With Djemal Pasha directing affairs from his base in Damascus, Kress von Kressenstein led a larger Ottoman army across the Sinai desert, again. This attack ran into a strong British defensive fortification at Romani, 40 kilometres (25 mi) east of the canal. The Ottoman army prepared a major set-piece assault on Romani, scheduled for 3 August 1916. The attack was beaten off and again the Ottomans retreated back to their bases in Palestine. The British responded with an attack of their own. They captured some small Ottoman forts in the Sinai, built a railroad and water pipe across the desert and then launched an assault on the Ottoman fort at Gaza. Kress von Kressenstein was in charge of the Ottoman defences along with General Tala Bey. In the First Battle of Gaza (March 1917), the British were defeated, largely due to their own errors. In the Second Battle of Gaza in April 1917, the British were defeated again, the credit for this victory largely going to Kress von Kressenstein. The British removed their unsuccessful generals and replaced them with General Allenby. The Ottomans also replaced their top leadership, bringing in the former Chief of the German General Staff, General von Falkenhayn. Kress von Kressenstein was kept on as commander of the Ottoman 8th Army defending Gaza and he was also awarded Prussia's highest order, the Pour le Mérite. In November 1917, the British under General Allenby breached the Ottoman defensive positions at the Battle of Beersheba and the Third Battle of Gaza. Kress von Kressenstein was able to withdraw his defeated troops in fairly good order to new defensive positions in the north. In the middle of 1918, with the Ottoman-German alliance breaking down, Kress von Kressenstein was sent with a small German force to Georgia (Caucasus), that was protected by Germany after its independence. He helped to frustrate the Red Army's invasion of Georgian region Abkhazia. (Source: Wikipedia). This is the first and only Turkish translation of his memoirs in Palestine during World War 1.

Friedlaender, Israel
ZIONISM AND RELIGIOUS JUDAISM
1st Separate Edition. Original Wrappers. 12mo. 5 pages ; 16 cm. Printed as a tri-fold pamphlet with text on every page but the cover. Reprinted from the New York Evening Post (December 12, 1917) by the Zionist Organization of America. Published the year after the FAZ was renamed and Zionist Organization of America is printed on the title page. In 1909 Friedlander became the founding president of Young Judaea, an amalgam of several Zionist youth groups. In 1912, together with Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan, a professor of homiletics and philosophy of religion at the Jewish Theological Seminary, he guided young Jewish adults in combating assimilation into secular American society or Reform circles. These efforts resulted in a popular lecture series, which were a predecessor of the Young Israel movement to combat the wave of assimilation by Jews
.He was part of the Governing Board of the Intercollegiate Menorah Society, the Executive Committee of Bureau of Education of the Jewish Community of New York City and the Executive Committee of the Federation of American Zionists. He was known for his ardent support of Zionism. In 1918, Friedlander was invited to travel to Mandate Palestine as the Jewish representative of a Red Cross relief mission. In January 1920, Friedlander traveled to Poland as part of a four-member commission of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee to distribute $35 million to starving Jews in Poland and Ukraine. The US State Department gave its permission for the trip, but would not issue passports or afford any protection to the commission members. On July 5, Friedlander and Rabbi Bernard Cantor were murdered by soldiers of the Red Cavalry near Kamenetz-Podolsk, Ukraine (Wikipedia, 2018). OCLC lists just 4 holdings worldwide 4 (Harvard, Smith, HUC, UVa) , none in New York. Very light soiling to front wrapper. Overall Very Good Condition. (ZION-10-30A)
