‎Paul Lucas est un voyageur en Orient du début du XVIIIe siècle. « Antiquaire » du roi, il est envoyé à plusieurs reprises en Égypte, dabord pour en ramener des antiques et des médailles puis pour décrire les temples de la Haute Égypte dont lexistence vient tout juste dêtre révélée au monde européen. Il est surtout connu pour avoir rédigé (ou avoir fait rédiger) trois récits de voyage en Orient - et particulièrement en Égypte -, qui connurent en leur temps un véritable succès éditorial. Or la haute fantaisie de ces récits, et tout particulièrement du premier, a donné au voyageur une solide réputation de menteur. Cette première relation a aveuglé les critiques qui nont pas alors su voir que Paul Lucas est non seulement le premier véritable explorateur de la Basse Égypte, où il découvre et décrit le premier le temple de lIseum, mais aussi un pionnier de lexploration et de la description du Fayoum. En plus de ses découvertes, Paul Lucas est le premier à rapporter dauthentiques croquis des temples réalisés sur place et cest peut-être lun des voyageurs les plus à lécoute des rumeurs locales, notamment celles concernant les monuments pharaoniques. Certes Lucas enjolive, déforme, invente même, mais plutôt que de tout rejeter en bloc, cest à nous, comme lorsque nous lisons Hérodote, de tirer un apport scientifique de sa gangue de fantaisie. .............Première édition RARE du troisième voyage de Lucas effectué entre 1714 et 1717. Ma mentre si parla di guerra e di terrorismo e si cercano possibili soluzioni, poca importanza viene data alle altre dimensioni strategiche del problema, dimenticando, in quanto offuscati da queste direttrici principali, gli aspetti della vita quotidiana di coloro che in quel contesto vivono. A fascinating publication, published by the Zionist Information Office of the Jewish National Fund, and printed in Tel Aviv. Not a traditional traveller's guide to the Holy Places, it is an invitation to visit the Zionist community in Palestine. It includes background information for visits in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and its region, Haifa, Valley of Yisrael, Nazareth, Afula, Beth Shean, as well as some newly established villages. The appendix brings a financial report of the Fund's activities. The cover states the publisher's price of 3 Piaster - 60 Pfennig.‎

‎This collective work presents the preliminary results of excavations undertaken by the Canadian archaeological mission to Tell ?Acharneh, Syria in 1998, 1999, and 2002, as well as the results of a study season of excavated materials carried out in the Hama Museum in 2004. Field reports on each annual campaign, prepared by the director of the mission, describe the architectural remains according to their chronological and stratigraphic position at the site. Those reports are completed with specialized studies, written by different experts, of various categories of artifacts recovered over the course of excavations, such as pottery, coins and chipped stone artifacts. The archaeological studies are preceded by articles pertaining to epigraphic sources which make reference to Tunip, a city which is frequently documented in ancient texts and which corresponds most probably to the site of Tell ?Acharneh. Historical documents of the Middle Ages, during which time Tell ?Acharneh became designated by the toponym Tal Ibn Macher, are also discussed in this volume. Cet ouvrage collectif presente les resultats preliminaires des campagnes de fouilles qui ont ete menees par la mission archeologique canadienne en Syrie sur le site de Tell ?Acharneh en 1998, 2001 et 2002, ainsi que de la saison d?etude du materiel archeologique, issu de ces fouilles, qui eut lieu en 2004 au Musee de Hama. ‎This volume is the progress report of three further seasons of excavations at Tell Beydar (Syria, 1995-1997). The excavations at the central acropolis of the the IIIrd Millennium tell revealed most important Early Jezirah III and IV official buildings, including an official block (EJ III) and a series of temples (EJ III-IV). Deep soundings (fields G and I) brought much informations about the early levels of the Kranzhugel. The E field granary is fully published and adds considerable knowledge about the debated question of storage facilities in Upper Mesopotamia. The discovery of several levels of inner fortification walls proved the strategical importance of this town in the third Millennium. A considerable amount of stratified evidence is presented and helped in setting up the periodization of this urban centre, the ancient name of which was probably Nabada. Evidence from the hellenistic levels from the Upper Town enlightens the stratigraphy of this poorly known period in Upper Mesopotamia. Subartu IX includes a preliminary report of excavations at Beydar III, a Late Chalcolithic settlement.‎

THIS COPY FORMED PART OF THE BRACKENBURY BEQUEST TO THE STAFF COLLEGE, CAMBERLEY. It bears the fine engraved armorial Brackenbury bookplate on front paste-down, the Camberley stamp (cancelled) together with several date stamps on half-title, and 'not to be retained' label on front board. Published in the official series 'History of the Great War', based on official documents by direction of the historical section of the Committee of Imperial Defence. This first (of two) volumes covers the commands of Maxwell and Murray, and deals with the defence of Suez, the advance across Sinai into Southern Palestine and First and Second Gaza. It also includes the campaign against the Senussi, minor operations in the Sudan and against the Sultan of Darfur, and the outbreak of the Arab Revolt (aided by Lawrence). Co-compiler Cyril Falls is the author of the standard WWI bibliography 'War Books' (1930). The separate portfolio of maps is not present with this copy. Scarce in this original edition. ‎First edition. This first volume contains 24 letters to British men of high rank on a wide variety of ethnographical matters, many of which are of medical character. The author was an Irish physician; in these letters he made observations on e.g. opium eaters, the state of medicine at Constantinople (a consultation, medical priest, wounded artillery man, amulets, vapour bath, etc.), harems, ceremonies, law, the plague at Alexandria, malaria, filth of Turkish towns, religion, audience with the sultan, medical advice to western travellers in the Middle East, and many many other most interesting aspects.In his preface he describes the difficulty he encountered , when his fate had been "... to have been taken for a spy in Syria, to have endangered my life in Candia, for refusing to administer poison, to have been shot in Canea twice, and once on the Nile by Turkish soldiers, to have been accused of changing the fragments of a broken statue into gold at Thebes, to have been charged with sorcery in Nubia, and to have been captive with Greek pirates, for wearing a long beard, when taken in a vessel bearing Turkish property ...".
