Matilde Serao è stata una scrittrice e giornalista italiana, protagonista del rinnovamento della letteratura e del giornalismo italiano negli anni cruciali tra Ottocento e Novecento. Oltre ad aver lavorato intensamente come giornalista, fu autrice di settanta fra romanzi e raccolte di racconti, la maggior parte di impronta verista. Elegante e solida legatura in mezzo marocchino rosso moderno con titolo oro, fregi al dorso a nervi. Maestosa opera riccamente illustrata da 96 acquatinte colorate da mano coeva. Bell'esemplare in prima edizione di questa raccolta di opere di Mayer. L'artista italiano Luigi Mayer venne incaricato da Sir Robert Ainslie di realizzare dipinti ed incisioni delle località dell'Impero Ottomano. Dal suo soggiorno a Costantinopoli in qualità di ambasciatore Sir Robert portò diversi disegni originali che servirono a Mayer per queste incisioni spettacolari ed esotiche della Palestina dell'Egitto e di Costantinopoli. Nato in Germania, Luigi Mayer studiò a Roma presso la bottega di Piranesi . Nel 1792 Mayer fu assunto quale assistente artistico di un giovane inglese (Sir Ainsle) che stava compiendo un tour in Oriente. Il 20 settembre 1775 Ainslie fu designato quale successore di John Murray come ambasciatore britannico alla Porta Ottomana e lo stesso giorno fu nominato Pari d'Inghilterra. Nel maggio del 1776 partì alla volta di Costantinopoli. Il nuovo sultano 'Abd-ul-hamid, che succedette nel 1774, auspicava dei rapporti più stretti con l'Inghilterra, sia commerciali che politici ed instaurò con Ainslie un'ottima amicizia che gli permise di adattarsi felicemente alla vita di Costantinopoli affezionandosi ai costumi della popolazione. . Between the Jews, Christians and all others who claim Jerusalem as their history holy city, the Turkish rule was longest in the history of the Holyland. First Seljukids, Artuqids and Zangids, and after that Mamluks from (1250 to 1516) and lastly Ottoman Turks ruled (from 1516 to 1917) in Jerusalem and surroundings. But despite this long rule, the Turkish heritage and contribution to Jerusalem is often overlooked or underestimated in the literature. In this book there are 122 inscriptions from Jerusalem and other parts of Ottoman Palestine mostly published for the first time. All the inscriptions are accompanied by recent photos on paper and CD-Rom, so that one can check the inscriptions and the authors interpretation and reading. There are also detailed maps of the location of the inscriptions.

Reliure demi maroquin, 5 faux nerfs, fente de 4 cm en pied de mors du second plat, une fente de 1 cm au niveau de la coiffe inférieure, très légères traces d'épidermure sur les mors, percaline sur les plats un peu frottée sur les coins, in-4°, intérieur en bonne condition, rousseurs assez éparses, p. de faux titre, p. de titre, double planche formant frontispice, 463 p. errata. Sur la première garde, intéressant suivi de cet exemplaire au u troisième quart du vingtième siècle commençant par un ex-dono de Pierre de Vogüé (un cousin de l'auteur) à un prêtre de la paroisse de Saint Séverin puis son entrée dans la bibliothèque du marquis de Godefroy de Ménilglaise puis de son don à un vicaire de la paroisse de Sainte Clotilde.
