Small octavo. Pp. 77, (3). Set in Gothic type; bit thumb-soiled in places. Bound in the original printed stiff wrappers, incorporating publisher's and other announcements, one of which is illustrated. In a very good condition. ~ First and only edition. Selig Schachnowitz (1874-1952), noted neo-Orthodox journalist and writer. In 1908, at the invitation of Agudat Israel in Germany, he became editor of Der Israelit, a post he held for 30 years until the journal was closed down by the Nazis in 1938. He escaped to Switzerland, taking up residence in Zurich, where he continued his public and literary work until his death. Following a visit to Israel in 1931, he wrote "Zwischen Ruinen und Aufbau in Erez-Israel", which praised agricultural settlement and expressed strong reservations about the lack of religious observance in the new Israel. He was a prolific writer and although his various publicistic works were of a religious propagandist nature, many were of a high literary standard and attracted numerous readers. For a review of Schachnowitz's travelogue in Palestine, see Wolf Kaise: "Palästina, Erez Israel" (Doctoral Thesis, Berlin, 1988).

Program manual for the celebration of Hamishah Asar B'Shevat; with a history of the origin and meaning of the holiday, its significance for American Jews, observing the holiday in a group, the trees of Israel, and games, crafts and projects for the classroom. Contains a one page bibliography at rear. "[I]n 1948 the Zionist dream of an independent State of Israel miraculously came to pass, and one of the first things the settlers did when they came back to their land was to plant trees and develop moshavim (collective farms) . Reforesting the land by planting trees during Tu B'Shevat eventually became national custom. Today Israeli schoolchildren plant trees in special ceremonies (neti'at etzim) . And people living the Disapora often donate money to plant trees in Israel through the services of the Jewish National Fund. Hans-Joachim Schoeps (1909-1980) was a German Jewish professor and scholar of religious history who taught at the University of Erlangen. Most of his writings deal with primitive Christianity, and he in effect sought to bringing Judaism closer to Christianity (interesting, in that respect, was his belief, in and around 1933, that it was possible for German Jews to come to terms with National Socialism.) Wrappers scuffed, with slight sun damage. Some pages still uncut from printing. Otherwise, good condition (GER-41-35)
