East India Inland Steam Navigation Company
Report of a Committee Appointed by a General Meeting to Enquire into the Prospects of a Company Established in London for Navigating the Rivers in the East Indies by Steam Boats
London: Smith Elder and Co 1839. Softcover. Good. First edition. Octavo. Disbound. 49pp. folding map. Lacking wrappers; title page and folding map detached from sewing; good. A scarce report establishes an early point for the English empire's interest in establishing a steam boat line in India and the methods by which they proposed to go about doing so. Commercial manufacturers and various merchants from Manchester Liverpool and India were enlisted to support the proposal and the report outlines navigational routes estimations of cost and the enthusiasm of changing maritime trading methods up and down the Ganges. The idea for an East India Inland Steam Navigation Company apparently began percolating in 1837 and this report fits nicely within the small pantheon of material devoted to this literature. Not in OCLC. One copy found at the British Library. Smith, Elder and Co paperback

The logbook of the Ottoman navy: Ships, legends, sailors.= Osmanli donanmasinin seyir defteri: Gemiler, efsaneler, denizciler.
New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 229 p., color and b/w ills. The logbook of the Ottoman navy: Ships, legends, sailors.= Osmanli donanmasinin seyir defteri: Gemiler, efsaneler, denizciler. Ottoman Principality was introduced to the dark sea of the Middle Ages early in the 14 th century. The battles with the Venetians and the Genoese, conquests in Rumelia, and the establishment of the first shipyards all occurred during this period. As the conquest of Istanbul marked the end of the period of transition from Principality to Empire, the foundations of a strong navy that would unite the Mediterranean and the Black Sea over a political geography were laid. The power of the corsairs diminished by the end of the Renaissance; Barbaros Hayreddîn Pasha personified the golden age of Ottoman sea power. The discovery of the New World had instigated a revolution in the maritime world. Traditional Venetian galleys gave way to Spanish galleons and manpower was replaced by wind power. The Ottoman navy assumed a pioneering role in the process of modernization that extended from the 18 th to the 20 th century. Naval education in the Western sense, the implementation of new technologies and the organization of a modern fleet were all consequences of this period. Advancing from the galley to the battlecruiser, Ottoman sea power had the final say in the affairs of the Empire. "The Logbook of the Ottoman Navy: Ships, Legends, Sailors" exhibition intertwines three distinct, yet integrated mythologies of the sea. The imprint of the ships in Ottoman seafaring history, the battles they were engaged in and the heroes who became legendary in these battles assume their places on the stage of civilization in all their historic magnitude. At the center of the construct lies the extraordinary adventure of the transition from traditional to modern seafaring methods. The quest for power, the demolished thrones and man's identification of his fate with the sea is perhaps the oldest story behind this adventure. The cornerstones of a long history that extends from the legacy of a 16 th century Ottoman galley to the battlecruiser, Yavuz, is brought to light through the memories of seamen.

Strategic approaches for maritime industries in Poland and Turkey.
New English Paperback. Small 4to. (27 x 19 cm). In English. [x], 228 p. Strategic approaches for maritime industries in Poland and Turkey. Maritime industry, one of the most international fields, inevitably desires global co-operations. Aware of this fact Dokuz Eylul University School of Maritime Business and Management and University of Gdansk Institute of Maritime Transport and Seaborne Trade have collaborated and this book is one of the fruitful results of this collaboration. This joint publication constitutes various studies and researches of the staff members from the two institutions and it provides a strategic point of view for the Polish and Turkish maritime industries. The overall aim is to contribute to the international safety and quality approaches, competitiveness and performance development in the maritime field. The histories of Poland and Turkey present numerous examples of constructive co-operations and this work is the first as a joint publication of the academicians from the two countries. The global feature of the maritime industry has provided a strong base for this opportunity and the study is presented to the attention of the maritime community with the belief of enhancing the international inheritance.

Ellsberg Commander Edward
HELL ON ICE. The Saga of the "Jeannette"
New York: Dodd Mead & Company 1938. Pages: xi 421. 1 map in the text 1 tailpiece illustration. Full tree-calf leather framed in gilt with gilt-stamped crest of Upper Canada College to front cover ornate gilt-stamping to the panelled spine black leather spine labels. Bright gilt to all edges marbled endpapers. A prize book with presentation sheet mounted to front pastedown endpaper and dated "October 21st 1938" otherwise there are no signatures marks etc. Light rubbing to the joints else a fine copy. Very handsome on the shelf! A dramatic fictionalized account of the fateful 1879 Jeannette expedition to the North Pole as told through the eyes of chief engineer George Wallace Melville. First published in 1938 the vivid tale was adapted as a radio broadcast by Orson Welles for the Mercury Theater who famously went on to produce 'War of the Worlds'. Commander Ellsberg discovered in the half-surpressed logs of the hapless expedition a story of incredible excitement and variety -- a tale of men locked two years in the Arctic pack of sudden disaster of desperate flight across the cruel ice of a wild small boat passage over the storm swept Arctic seas to the barren frozen tundra of Siberia. But more than that he saw in those events human heroism and courage in the face of such hardships as have never been recorded before nor since. He saw men who had been ordinary sailors and officers transformed by extraordinary occurences -- some into gallant leaders a few into shirkers and mutineers others into lunatics some into reckless martyrs one at least into a hero whom all men can be proud. FIRST EDITION. Full-Leather. Very Good. Octavo. Dodd, Mead & Company Hardcover

In mechanics he never advanced a proposition which he had not previously tested in practice nor published an invention without first proving its effects by a model. He was skilled in the science of music the theory of sounds and the ancient and modern scales; but he never attained any excellence as a performer. He died on 20 May 1782 at his native village.
