That Lonely Game: Melville, Mardi and the Almanac
Book is in excellent condition, in green cloth covers, large graphic in black on front cover, gilt lettering at spine. Many b&w illustrations on heavy cream colored paper, top page ends colored. Binding is solid and square, covers have sharp corners, exterior shows no blemishes, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. Dust jacket shows the slightest signs of shelf wear only, is price clipped, no tears. Previous owner's name or sticker in front section of the book. From the flyleaf "Irked by the derogatory reaction of British critics who doubted that such books as Typee and Omoo could have been written by a common American sailor, Melville created Mardi -- on the surface, the record of an odyssey through imagined South Sea world. For the first time, Moore unravels the puzzle Melville created in Mardi, designed to dupe his elitist British readers, by exploring Melville's knowledge of astronomy, nautical navigation, astrology, and game theories. Hennig Cohen's foreword defends the traditional approach to reading Mardi and argues that Moore's heretical interpretation is interesting but narrow in scope. Moore then invites the reader to 'play Mardi'--to engage in games of wit, elaborate metaphor, and arcane learning-- to reveal the full meaning of the novel. The game may be plated most successfully by using the astronomy and astrology of Melville's time, but a knowledge of the Tarot and Ganjifa cards and of the usual Western decks of playing cards will add depth to your understanding. Mardi fulfills Melville's calim to originality and stands unique as a masterpiece of synthesis. Moore demonstrates a circular pattern in which metaphors intertwine and shows how Melville's use of The American Alamanac and his metaphor of time provides unity. She theorizes that Melville was a highly concious artist, capable of manipulating intricate strands of imagery, metaphor, and symbol through a detailed and precise method. Moreover, an elaborate system of puns gives his work an unsuspected economy even where it seems excessively and unnecessarily wordy. Though Mardi fails, perhaps from tediousness and overmanipulation, Melville followed through with the artistic implications in his later and greater books. Moore feels he had a highly developed concept of the errant or deceitful narrator and hoped to force his readers into an intense riddle-solving approach to Mardi."

Interesting association copy for this belonged to the noted writer HAROLD BELL WRIGHT 1872-1944 one of the most popular novelists of the early 20th century author of such bestsellers as "The Shepherd of the Hills" 1907 "The Calling of Dan Matthews" 1909 and "The Winning of Barbara Worth" 1911 -- whose descendants parted with much of HBW's personal library in December 2005. Wright was a serious long-time boating enthusiast a fanatical follower of all things nautical whose hobby was designing and building from scratch his own sailboats. After the world's first scientific underwater excavation took place at Cape Gelidonya in Turkey, in 1960, a group of distinguished scientists pioneered by George Bass shed light on an important part of history by making great efforts in excavations in Turkish waters. And the unsung heroes of the period are sponge divers, who showed the location of these shipwrecks to the archaeologist. We know that particularly the sponge divers of Bodrum were the ones who informed the archaeologists on the shipwrecks that are presently known and excavated. This book represents, a snapshot of the lives of these unsung heroes. Mustafa Kapkin being one of the first underwater photographers of Turkey, experienced their way of living and passed it down in its simplest form. Mustafa Kapkin is not just an underwater photography artist, but he also adores his country and the cultural heritage of this land. He is a remarkable person who guided Peter Throckmorton in our country in 1958, introduced him to Bodrum and its sponge divers, and then made an effort to introduce the underwater shipwrecks to the world.

Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original manuscript autograph letter/document signed/sealed by Mustafa Zeki Pasha who was Tophâne-i Âmire müsiri [i.e. Grandmaster and Commander of Artillery / Brigadier and Ministry of Military Schools], sent to Mazhar Pasha who was the commander of naval forces located in Chios Island (Sakiz Adasi) in the Archipelago, for the fortification to Chios fortress and around, and preparation an exploration report and a map. 34x21 cm. In Ottoman script. Folded. 1 p. It's written in a beautiful and legible riq'a script. Including 23 lines. Full. Zeki Pasha was one of the most trusted Ottoman generals and statesmen of Sultan Abdulhamid II. He served as Tophane Counselor for 18 years during the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II. In 1899, Italian architect Alexandre Vallaury built the 'Tophane Müsiri Zeki Pasa Mansion (Yali)', one of the most valuable estates of Istanbul, on his behalf. In 1908, he fell out of favor with the declaration of the Second Constitutional Monarchy by Union and Progress Society (Ittihad ve Terakki Cemiyeti) and was deported first to Büyükada and then to Rhodes.
