‎Rare première édition italienne de ce célèbre traité de navigation, premier ouvrage scientifique consacré au sujet. L'historien et hydrographe, Pierre de Médine naquit en 1493, sans doute à Séville, et mourut probablement en 1567. Humaniste et savant, il publia cinq livres, dont trois au moins en Andalousie : Libro de grandezas y cosas memorables de España, Libro de la Verdad (Séville, 1549), Arte de navegar (Valladolid, 1545), Cronica breve de España (Séville, 1548), Tabula hispaniae geographica (Séville, 1560), Cronica de los duques de Medina (1561). LArt de naviguer connut un immense succès en Europe, comme en témoignent ses nombreuses traductions. La présente est due à Vincenzo Paletino da Corzula, traduite de loriginal espagnol. Dès les premiers mots du « proème », Pierre de Médine, en 1545, et son traducteur, en 1554, répètent une leçon quUlysse, et Gilgamesh avant lui, enseignaient déjà aux enfants du Croissant fertile et quaucune École Navale ne manque, aujourdhui, denseigner à ses novices dès leur prime amarinage : « il faut tout savoir avant dappareiller ». Oui, tout, du monde et des hommes, des pratiques et théories. Lencyclopédie est le commencement de la philosophie, la moindre de ses politesses, comme le début de la navigation. Du dynamisme de ses erres, celle-ci relie les pays du monde comme les régions de la connaissance. Habiter, construire, naviguer, penser supposent la même communication. LArt de naviguer doit donc se lire, dabord, comme le modèle réduit du savoir contemporain, comme une traduction, en langage de mer, dune sorte dInstauratio magna, dans le style de Francis Bacon, dont le frontispice se souvenait encore, en 1628, de la caravelle cinglant vers le Nouveau Monde. (body of the book particularly fresh). Contemp. vellum. Rare first Italian edition of this famous navigation treatise, first scientific work devoted to the subject. The historian and hydrograph, Peter of Medina was born in 1493, probably in Seville, and probably died in 1567. Humanist and scholar, he published five books, including at least three in Andalusia: Libro de grandezas y cosas memorable de España, Libro of Verdad (Seville, 1549), Arte de navegar (Valladolid, 1545), Cronica breve de España (Seville, 1548), Tabula hispaniae geographica (Seville, 1560), Cronica de los Medina (1561). The Art of Navigation had a huge success in Europe, as evidenced by its many translations. The Art of use must be read first, as the model of contemporary knowledge, such as translation, in maritime language, a sort of Instauratio magna, in the style of Francis Bacon, whose frontispiece still remembered in 1628, the caravel sailing towards the New World. The present edition is due to Vincenzo Paletino da Corzula, translated from the Spanish original. The book is illustrated 82 diagrams and wood-cut figures specifying the type of navigation recommended, according to the winds, the Sun, the North Star or the Moon. ), including the great woodcut of the ships on the title and early book 2, and a full-page map of Europe, Africa and the New World. Les lithogr. originales montrent le bateau ‘Le Verban’; une très jolie grande vue dépl. ‘Grand Hôtel du Bateau à Vapeur à Magadino... de la plus grande beauté, dont les alentours sont justement appelés le Paradis de la Suisse italienne’ (Lith. des Frères Eglin à Lucerne) et ‘Le Colosse de St. Charles Borromée sur le Mont d’Arona’. Un petit supplément à partir de la page 100 de M. Pierre Miani de Venise, Mécanicien du Bateau à Vapeur LE VERBAN après dix ans environ d’expérience, a pour titre: Navigation sur le Lac Majeur en temps de Brouillards. La modeste somme demandée pour ce petit souvenir de Navigation sur le Lac, a certainement contribué à ce que la brochure soit négligée, oubliée et jetée aux vieux papier après usage.
