The Aire and Calder Navigation. January 14th 1828. The meeting of Parliament being fixed for an early period the proprietors of the Aire and Calder Navigation feel themselves called upon previously to offer to the public a short statement of the measures . they have considered it expedient to adopt.

Inchbolds of Leeds with blue and red highlights unbound and folded as issued. A fine copy. Probably very rare: no copy located. The Aire and Calder Navigation was and is a net work of waterways in Yorkshire promoted by Acts passed in 1699 1774 1820 and 1828. In 1828 another canal development company had attempted by a private Bill to be allowed to make a canal from Wakefield to Ferrybridge in direct opposition to the Aire and Calder. The Bill was thrown out with the proviso that the Aire and Calder Company would urgently provide more capacity on its navigation. With the professional help of the distinguished civil engineer Thomas Telford the Company sets out in the present document its plans for increasing the tonnage capacity of the navigation but various realignments resulting in a reduction of the length of the navigation from Wakefield to Castleford by 4� miles at the same time allowing vessels of seven feet draught. The new line would not it was claimed 'approach the mansion park or pleasure ground of any individual'. The Proprietors of the Aire and Calder moreover strongly objected to the interlopers' proposals in view of their recent expensive development of the Goole Canal and its quays docks and warehouses. n.p.
