L'auteur Joseph Deschamps du Manoir, né à Granville le 28 décembre 1828 et mort à Naples (Italie) le 4 août 1906 , est une personnalité catholique de la Manche. Il est ordonné prêtre en 1858 et nommé vicaire à Notre-Dame-des-Champs d'Avranches. C'est un érudit, passionné de recherches en histoire et archéologie et dont l'art de l'écriture est vite remarqué. À partir de 1860, il fait partie du comité du Journal d'Avranches et y invite Oscar Havard à ses débuts. Il est membre titulaire de la Société d'archéologie d'Avranches, Mortain et Granville dès 1864 [6] et en deviendra correspondant depuis Naples. Il adhère à de nombreuses sociétés savantes et autres académies, comme la Société des Arcades à Rome et, peu avant sa mort, à la nouvelle société littéraire et historique fondée par Raoul Fougeray du Coudrey. Entre 1891 et 1897, il contribue à La revue des Provinces de l'Ouest basée à Rennes, de 1884 à 1903 à la Revue de l'Avranchin, dans quelques journaux français et des journaux italiens. En 1875, il s'installe à Naples où il vit plus de trente ans. Les 165 du premier volume sont le récit d'un voyage qui part d'Avranche et va jusqu'au havre en passant par le Mont-Saint-Michel, Saint-Malo, Rennes, Alençon, Granville Jersey, Chausey, dans le second volume la première partie concerne le sanctuaire de Mugnano et Sainte Philomène puis le P.-D. Huet Evèque d'Avranches. Rare, absent du CCFR pour la première partie (Seul une réimpression récente est à disposition). Livraison a domicile (La Poste) ou en Mondial Relay sur simple demande."
