NATO [North Atlantic Treaty Organization] Archives
Nuclear Planning Group; 50th Anniversary of the First Meeting of the NPG
North Atlantic Treaty Organization Archives 2017. Presumed First Edition First printing thus. Wraps. Very good. 186 pages. Illustrations some in color. Facsimiles. Format is approximately 8.25 inches by 11.75 inches. Cover shows The First Meeting of the NPG 6-7 April 1967 Washington D.C. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Nuclear Planning Group the NATO Archives presents a selection of declassified and publicly disclosed NATO documents press releases communiqués and photographs to offer a glimpse into the discussions the debates and the public diplomacy that helped structure and pave the was towards that first historic Washington meeting. Presented in chronological order these documents highlight the gradual evolution of the high-level political process away from debates about nuclear sharing based on Allied ownership and control of the nuclear forces and more toward a consultative approach to nuclear policy. The Nuclear Planning Group NPG is NATO's principal body for planning discussing and deciding on matters relating to nuclear policy. The NPG was founded on 14 December 1966 when the Defence Planning Committee in Ministerial Session accepted the recommendation of the Special Committee of Defence Ministers chaired by Robert McNamara of the United States to establish a consultative process on nuclear doctrine within NATO. Ministers implemented these recommendations by creating the Nuclear Defence Affairs Committee which included all NATO members and the NPG which was restricted to nations participating in NATO's integrated military structure and was mandated to carry out detailed work on nuclear issues. In order to facilitate the NPG's work only seven nations sat on the Group at any one time. The United States United Kingdom Italy and West Germany were permanent members while appointments to the other three NPG seats lasted for one year and rotated amongst the eligible nations. This type of radiation is used for medical testing and treatment. It is also used in industrial and manufacturing purposes weapons and weapons development and more. Chemoprevention or chemoprophylaxis refers to the administration of a medication for the purpose of preventing disease or infection. Antibiotics for example may be administered to patients with disorders of immune system function to prevent bacterial infections particularly opportunistic infection. Antibiotics may also be administered to healthy individuals to limit the spread of an epidemic or to patients who have repeated infections such as urinary tract infections to prevent recurrence. In some cases chemoprophylaxis is initiated to prevent the spread of an existing infection in an individual to a new organ system as when intrathecal chemotherapy is administered in patients with malignancy to prevent further infection. All medications have the potential to cause side effects. In general chemoprophylaxis should be initiated only when the benefits of treatment outweigh the risks.
