Written 85 years after the Bounty mutineers first landed on Pitcairn this volume offers a somewhat sanitized version of the history of this tiny IslandÑthe world's smallest democratic unit administeredby the British High Commissioner to New Zealand for the British Crown. The 2010 constitution gives authority for the islands to operate as a representative democracy with theUnited Kingdom retaining responsibility for matters such as defence and foreign affairs. The Governor and the Island Council may enact laws for the 'peace order and good government' of Pitcairn. The Island Council customarily appoints a Mayor of Pitcairn as a day-to-day head of the local administration. Anne 'was also deeply concerned for the welfare of her clergy especially those who were in want. The old medieval dues of 'First Fruits and Tenths' which the pope had always collected from the English clergy had been annexed to the crown by Henry VIII and converted into a fixed tax which amounted to some �16000 a year. Anne moved by two of the bishops Burnet and Sharp gave all this money in 1704 to form a fund known as Queen Anne's Bounty from which the stipends of the poorer clergy might be augmented.'
