Montreal: Canadian Pacific Railway 1912. Descriptive timetable of the western Canadian tour from Toronto to Vancouver and back by rail and steamship by the new Governor-General of Canada H.R.H. Prince Arthur William Patrick Albert first Duke of Connaught and Strathearn 1850-1942. The royal party consisted of the Duke and Duchess Princess Patricia two ladies in waiting Lt.-Col. H.C.Lowther Capt. T.H.Rivers 2 aides-decamp Major E.S.Worthington medical officer and Mr. W.R.Baker representing the CPR. The work is illustrated by photographic based views of the countryside and cities of western Canada. This would appear to be one of a limited number of copies specially bound for presentation. No records have been located. Prince Arthur Arthur William Patrick Albert first Duke of Connaught and Strathearn was posted to Canada on military duty in 1869-70 serving during the Red River Rebellion and the Fenian Raid of 1870. In 1911 he was appointed Governor-General of Canada a position he held until 1916. Not in Peel or Edwards and Lort. London: Canadian Pacific Ocean Services 1930. Folding deck plan of the transatlantic steamer Empress of France showing cabins their furnishings noting other passenger and a few crew spaces; with b/w photos of the ship's cabins & amenities on the reverse. This is a general depiction of the ship not associated with any particular planned cruise. Built in 1913 for the Allan Line and christened the SS Alsatian the ship served the trans-Atlantic trade until her conversion into an armed merchant cruiser in World War One; after the war she was acquired by the CP refitted and renamed Empress of France in 1919. After a global circumnavigation in 1923 she was converted from coal to oil fuel. She continued to serve mostly the Southampton UK to Quebec route and was reconfigured twice with the configuation shown in this plan done in 1927. In 1928 & '29 she sailed in the Pacific returning to Atlantic service about the time this plan was produced. Her final voyage was in 1931 after which she was laid up in the Clyde and scrapped in 1934. The plan notes her 27600 tons displacement geared turbine quadruple screws gross register of 18400 tons length of 600 feet breadth 72 feet speed 19½ knots; space for 281 first class 368 tourist third cabin and 368 third class passengers with color key to their cabins & facilities. On its other side are nine b/w photos showing the ship drawing room bedroom of a suite smoking & dining rooms lounges. Single sheet folded several times; folded size about 19.5 by 9.5 cm 7¾ by 3¾ inches; unfolded about 75 by 101 cm 29½ by 39¾ inches. Plan in black three colors opposite in b/w only. Montreal: Canadian Pacific Railway 1874. Very Good; laid down on acid-free tissue paper for long-term preservation. Notes: A very important and early working map of Alberta and British Columbia depicting existing and suggested railways.<br>There is a note written in period ink in the lower margin in reference to a contemporary marking of newly suggested routes in black ink:<br><br>"Note -- The Surveys made since the publication of the Report & Maps of 1874 shew the routes colored full black line and thus broken black line to be the best lines for railway construction that have been found to this date Oct 1875. Mr. Smith".<br><br>"Mr. Smith" is believed to be Donald A. Smith a major partner in the yet-to-be incorporated Canadian Pacific Railway Company in 1881. <br><br>The routes marked out in red as printed depict potential lines crossing the Rockies to the west of Edmonton at Yellowhead Pass. Almost none of the suggested routes depicted on this map were eventually used--CPR dismissed the use of Yellowhead Pass for a pass farther south in order to discourage competition from railway lines south of the border. They chose instead Kicking Horse Pass which is depicted on this map. <p>ca. early 1942. Very good. 23 x 31 cm unfolded. Colour illustration on one side and menu and signatures on the other. About 55 ink signatures often with ranks. Faint stain on ship. <br /><br />Major General Arthur Edward Potts 1890-1983 was a Canadian general officer active in both world wars. In July 1940 Potts was promoted to brigadier and took over the command of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Brigade. He led the brigade in Operation Gauntlet the commando raid at Spitsbergen intended to deny Germany the coal mining and shipping infrastructure equipment and stores on the island. "Force 111" consisted of two battalions of the brigade. Afterwards Potts was transferred to the Pacific shores of British Columbia and in 1943 was appointed commander of Military District 2 in Toronto.</p>

Green card stock with original painting and manuscript lettering on front wrapper. 5 more tempera and india ink paintings and border decorations. Wear to spine and slight wear to corners. Slight paint transfer from images to opposite pages and first painting has some smudging in top corner. very good A dummy brochure consisting of 6 paintings: one train one CPR logo and 4 decorative borders that would later include text or photo illustrations. Possibly intended to contain information on Western Canada due to the pine tree and mountain imagery. Front cover illustration is signed by Glidden Second image signed WC27. The only original manuscript template for a CPR brochure we have ever encountered. The front illustration is beautifully done and with internal illustrations having an art deco feel.
