Pacific Airway - An Aviation History: Air Pilot Navigator Volume Two (2)
282 pages. Index. References. Dozens of black and white reproductions of archival photos in text. "During WWII the RCAF developed five flying boat stations between Victoria and Prince Rupert for the defense of the Pacific Coast. It would be well into 1943 before airfields were built on the west coast in both Alaska and British Columbia suitable for serving the needs of military aircraft. It would be these airfields, developed in a time of intense need, that would evolve into the future airfields that exist along the entire Pacific Coast today. This, then, is the story of both these airfields and the air harbours that preceded them." - from Preface. This copy was presented by a daughter to her father and contains her lengthy and heartfelt gift greetings to him inside the front cover. Few other markings to contents. Average wear. A sound copy. Weiss, Mike
NO GO ON JACKSON STREET
N.Y.: Charles Scribner's Sons 1987. 1st edition April 1987 so stated. Advance uncorrected proof fine in wraps. author's fictional debut featuring former newspaperman turned cabbie Ben Henry. "Edgar-winning nonfiction author Weiss Double Play" makes a snappy fiction debut here. Ben Henry 40-ish ex-reporter and San Francisco cabdriver is asked for help by Yollo foster son of Ben's best friend. It seems someone has set the young man up to take the rap for the murder of San Francisco's top columnist. Yollo an outlandishly fey drug dealer isn't one of Ben's favorite people but the former newspaperman is intrigued by the murder and begins sleuthing. Ben sees Yollo shot to death and soon becomes embroiled in a tangled web of murder drugs hidden family ties and multigenerational revenge. The colorful characters include the columnist's beautiful daughter a powerful and malevolent newspaper publisher and his gay son. The solution won't surprise veteran mystery readers but Weiss keeps things moving and Ben Henry is nicely hard-boiled without being trite. Especially refreshing is his affectionately skeptical view of San Francisco: "More like Cincinnati than it could ever admit to itself a vain little popinjay of a town that called itself everybody's favorite." -- PUBLISHERS WEEKLY. First Edition. Printed Wrapper. Fine. Uncorrected Proof. Charles Scribner's Sons Paperback
