Winnecke, C.
Mr. C. Winnecke's Last Explorations in the Northern Territory, South Australia.
8vo. 4 pages, plus a folding colour map which measures 11.5 inches x 8 inches and shows details of Winnecke's survey work in Central Australia from August to December 1883. This is a complete issue of the Royal Geographical Society, published October 1884, in excellent condition, containing the above narrative, and historically valuable map. Item is in original condition, with blue wrappers, as issued, complete with all the ads. A succinct and informative account accompanies the map, revealing that this territory, near the western Queensland boundary, was previously unknown, indicated only as a vast blank space on maps. Winnecke quickly found the task of exploring and surveying the region was most onerous, yet persevered to success - the map here being the first of the area. The text makes specific reference to notes in Winnecke's diary, in one instance being forced to dig a deep well, due to the extreme scarcity of water for the camels. As well as charting the land, Winnecke names peaks, collects plenty of flora, and observes fauna. Still in the midst of exploring while this account was published, Surveyor-General G. W. Goyder of the Australia colony submits the paper for dispatching, thus published here.

Winslow, Don
CALIFORNIA FIRE AND LIFE SHAMUS AWARD WINNER
New York: Alfred A Knopf Inc 1999. 1st edition so stated. Fine in pictorial laminated boards with dust jacket not price clipped in protective mylar cover. A SHAMUS AWARD WINNER and a DILYS AWARD NOMINEE. " ack Wade is "basically a Dalmatian": when a fire happens he's there. Jack who works to live and lives to surf was a sheriff's department fire investigator until he got caught planting evidence in a warehouse arson to protect a witness and is now the top claims adjuster for California Fire and Life. That means sifting around in the ashes of other people's lives -- or in this case deaths. When Pamela Vale passes out drunk and accidentally burns down the west wing of her Dana Point mansion along with half a million dollars of her husband's antique furniture Jack thinks maybe it wasn't an accident. There's no smoke in her lungs and the smoke from the fire should have been yellow or orange not the reported blood red plus the dog was outside. "People will never burn the pooch" Jack knows and he begins to search through the remains. Winslow The Death and Life of Bobby Z who himself worked more than 15 years with L.A. arson investigators follows Jack through the burned char of the Vale house where in the novel's most compelling scene he tracks down the history of the fire and reads its secrets. Pitted against him is a formidable adversary: Pamela's estranged husband Daziatnik Valeshin now known as Nicky Vale who has survived a Russian prison camp to make himself over into the model of a perfect Southern California gentleman. Jack's investigation is packed with extras -- Russian organized crime faked freeway accidents a $50 million insurance scam. But Southern California is captured perfectly in all its hyperbolic splendor its overdeveloped beachfronts its sudden mysterious blazes and freeway chills. If the plot contains a few too many contrivances and coincidences Winslow's knowledge of his subject and his territory and the narrative's rapid pace keep the entertainment value at steady flame. . Women's History World War II Women's Army Corps VE Day Pacific Theater Bremer Mary J.; Miller June; Melotte John
Collection of a Women’s Army Corps Technician Concerning VE Day Reassignment to the Pacific Theater and Processions for Roosevelt and Eisenhower with Lyrical Descriptions of Paris on V-E Day
Paris France; and Washington D.C. 1945. Six 8 x 10 inch and smaller typed pages; one 4 x 5 inch card with two tickets; one twenty-six page 4 x 5.5 inch pamphlet; one six page 6 x 8.5 inch pamphlet; six 2.5 x 3.5 photographs and two 3 x 4.5 inch photographs. Of the printed matter most is affixed to paper some small tears and folds; overall excellent; photographs near fine. Mary J. Bremer 1917–2019 was a Technician fourth grade from Grant Township Nebraska. Her correspondents here include June Miller 1920–deceased an aviation cadet from Michigan and John Melotte 1919–deceased an artilleryman from Philadelphia. Bremer and Miller were members of the Women’s Army Corps WAC. Established in May of 1942 as the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps the WAC converted to active duty in July of 1943. The women of WAC known as Wacs served in noncombatant roles across the various theaters of World War II.

Offered here is a small archive of Bremer’s documents and photographs relating to WAC: a few letters including a description of Paris the day after the Nazi surrender; two pamphlets including the War Department pamphlet Two down and One to go –; and a collection of photographs of Eisenhower’s victory parade and Roosevelt’s funeral procession.

On April 12 1945 President Roosevelt died of a stroke in Warm Springs Georgia. His body was returned to Washington two days later and a military procession escorted it from the train station to the White House. Two photographs of the funeral procession are included in the archive. One showing a woman at the start of a section of the parade is identified verso as “WACs led by Capt. Machenâ€.

The following month the Nazis surrendered. Bremer’s friend June Miller was stationed in Paris at the time. She wrote to Bremer the next day describing the celebration:
“It began the night before when we stood on the roof and watched the flares go off all over the city--just like the 4th of July; the Sacred Couer was blazing with lights and it looked like a miniature fairy-land. Last night all the famous old buildings including the Arc d’Triumph was all lit up the fountains in the parks at Concord in front of the Trocadero--they were all going and the kids were wading and splashing around having the time of their life. It was really something to see--something the French had been waiting a long time for. “Fini le guerre†they kept saying--the end of the war!â€

Miller also claims to have witnessed a bomber flying a celebratory loop through the Eiffel Tower:

“When we came out of the Trocadéro the fountains were on and what a sight that is. Looking down over the water that looks like a miniature waterfall to the Eiffel Tower at the bottom of a small hill. And if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes I would never have believed that I saw a small bomber come through the bottom but that’s just what it did--and just did clear it too. The planes seemed to be going as wild as the people on the ground--they were so thick up there that pretty soon we thought surely something would happen.â€
In June Dwight Eisenhower returned from Europe and a homecoming parade was held for him in Washington D.C. Six photographs of this parade are included in the archive including a shot of his plane arriving at the airport and one where he is visible standing in the back of a Jeep.

Miller notes in her letter from Paris that “you wondered what was coming next; where we would go from here ‘cause in a sense there is still a war very definitely going onâ€. In fact John Melotte who seems to be Miller’s partner writes to Bremer that he “May be slated for that place they call the CBI but don’t tell June please. She does not want me to even mention the place in my letters so I let well enough alone†July 15 1945. Hostilities would continue in the CBI—the China-Burma-India theater—until September of that year.
The process by which soldiers were selected to be sent to the Asia-Pacific theater is laid out in the War Department pamphlet Two down and One to go –. The pamphlet reminds them that there are still “a couple of big jobs ahead†the primary one being to “crush†or “smash†the “Japs†and the second one being to occupy and police “conquered lands . until the peril of future aggression is gone.†It is a visually striking piece with illustrations in a bold black and red color palette; its cover is a reproduction of a caricature of Hitler Mussolini and Hirohito by Polish-Jewish artist Arthur Szyk.

Also included in the archive are a card from a friend with tickets to an American League baseball game; a humorous poem congratulating Wacs Ruth O.B. and Lenore I. Nier on new work assignments; and a Christmas 1945 WAC pamphlet with a dinner menu and list of WAC officers. The pamphlet assures the Wacs with a note from Colonel Kenton Cooley “Before another Christmas you all will have returned to civilian life and each of you will take with you my appreciation and my sincere admiration for a great job well done.â€
Of interest to scholars of women’s history especially in the military; and of the events leading up to the end of the Second World War. unknown

L.A. TIMES
N.Y.: Harper Collins 1993. First edition with complete number line beginning with 1. Page edges beginning to age tone else fine in fine dust jacket not price clipped in protective mylar cover. "Prolific crime writer Woods is back in form with a propulsive thriller featuring a movie mogul embroiled in multiple murders. . Here with the help of a dynamic protagonist whose ambitions fuel a wild ride and an explosive ending. Vincente Michaele Callabrese works as a shake-down artist for the mob in New York City's Little Italy but moviegoing is his passion. Early in the story he changes his name to Michael Vincent and makes a break for L.A. where with the help of powerful studio head Leo Goldman he fufills his dream of becoming a big-time producer. Vincent's cosa nostra connections keep in touch particularly old pal Tommy Provenzano whose rise to power in New York parallels Vincent's in Hollywood. Eventually Vincent's desire to bring a gentle turn-of-the-century novel to the screen leads him to employ the sorts of techniques and friends that served him in his mafia days. Cinematic triumph follows but so does trouble. After so much absorbing Hollywood intrigue the mob-style violence of the novel's last chapters seems almost anti-climactic. Readers will have few complaints however having been eminently entertained by the abundant suspense Woods creates as he depicts this licentious adulterous and violent milieu . First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. Book. Harper Collins Hardcover

Cassie must evaluate part-Native American Homer Johnson who stands accused of kidnapping Anerd Woods the owner of Jackpot's a used auto-parts lot in a seemingly cut-and-dried case. To her surprise Cassie discovers Homer to be a complex young man a basically gentle soul enamored of Anerd's daughter who with her boyfriend has been jailed as an accomplice. Before she gets very far however Homer is released on bail; when the used auto-parts king goes missing Homer is charged with his murder. Balancing the care of the 80-year-old great-aunt in whose house she lives and the pursuit of two eligible bachelors gutsy charming Cassie eventually works her way through Homer's defenses to find out why he acts the way he does--and who really killed Anerd. WORLD WAR II - PACIFIC THEATRE.
American photograph album showing the war against Japan.
Manila: 1940s. A graphic album showing fighting in the Philippines the Marshall Islands Papua New Guinea Guam the Solomon Islands and Palau. The compiler chose to include violent images displaying the brutality of the campaign. The album opens with portrait shots of individual Marines or groups along with photographs of American encampments and ships. The scenes then turn more distressing with images of dead locals including children lying on the beach or next to tanks. The photographs were taken across the Pacific theatre: one shows an American soldier holding a flame-thrower on Kwajalein Atoll another shows a beach landing at Luzon and a third shows a Marine posing next to a sign in Bougainville. Most were taken in the final years of the conflict including at Guadalcanal and Peleliu. There are also shots of the end of the war one showing a Japanese soldier surrendering with a white flag and another showing Japanese prisoners of war in a camp in Guam. The final photograph is the most famous "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima" showing six Marines raising the US flag on Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima. This photograph won the 1945 Pulitzer Prize for Photography. The majority of the photographs are commercial with a few opening portrait shots of the unidentified compiler. Oblong folio 286 x 390 mm. With 55 gelatin silver photographs one lacking approximately 90 x 130 mm landscape or portrait corner-mounted with tape recto and verso on 7 leaves remainder blank. With 2 additional gelatin silver photographs loosely inserted. Contemporary brown sheep commercial album tied through punched holes with brown cord front board stamped with central armourial panel in blind gilt and black. Boards chipped at extremities especially front board bottom left corner rear board rubbed leaves nicked at fore edge photographs moderately toned and creased some slightly torn and abraded: a good example. hardcover
