16 pages. Plus a large fold-out colour map, measuring approximately 8.75 x 23 inches (22 x 59cm). Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. This early report was written at the time of great interest in New Guinea as the southern part was annexed by Britain in 1884. A Major Early New Guinea missionary work on the south east region of the island. With detailed accounts of indigenous peoples culture, topography, including records of cannibalism, customs, weapons, ornaments, etc. Chalmer's joined the mission in 1877 and in his time penetrated further inland than any other European. His first post was to Rarotonga in the Cook Islands in 1866, where "the community had been under the influence of Christian missions for decades. For years he had 'longed to get amongst real heathen and savages' and so rejoiced when he was assigned to work in New Guinea. He arrived in Port Moresby in October 1877." Chalmers travelled extensively, in some areas he travelled further inland than any other white men in his time. His main missionary activities were centred on the South-Eastern end of the country at South Cape, where he helped to build up a mission station among the Suau people." After a furlough in 1886/87 Chalmers returned to New Guinea to continue his missionary work but was killed near Goaribari Island in 1901.

This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. A primary source account of the first peaceful expedition into tribal regions of central Papua New Guinea, by a distinguished patrol officer who was native to the island himself, and who would later become a director in District Services and Native Affairs, as well as senior commissioner of the new Land Titles Commission. On this journey, the officer and expedition leader established good relations with indigenous tribes as he learned much about their communal lives. He further settled a new post, and provided a geographical survey which facilitated the first accurate map of the region. From April-December 1936 Ivan Champion led a major Bamu-Purari patrol to establish the remote Lake Kutubu patrol post, accompanied by patrol officer C.T.J. Adamson. Champion returned with a manuscript account of the mission, 123 pages in length, a condensed version of which is presented here in this foremost published account. As stated herein, circumstances caused a notable delay in publication. Champion's amicable experiences and collaboration with the indigenous Motuan and Koitabu inhabitants caused immense criticism of a patrol previously made by Jack G. Hides and his violent actions against native tribes, actions which Champion's expedition illustrated were unnecessary. In diary format, the officer describes arduous travel including river crossings and precipice climbing, as well as procuring fresh food, and pleasant interactions with native people, continuously making comparisons with Hides' erroneous reports. He also includes some striking photographic images of the tribes, their dwellings, canoes, and more, as well as a route map which again compares his tracts to those of Hides. Champion has been called "the last great explorer of Papua" and his book, 'Across New Guinea from the Fly to the Sepik' is now a classic in exploration.

This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. This is a fascinating account of a two-year expedition in the New Hebrides, focusing on the twelve months spent on Malekula, the second largest island of the group, being 46 miles long and 26 miles wide, and being densely forested from the shore-belt to the top of the hills. The remainder of the time was spent on four other islands with six weeks on Vanua Lava, Banks Islands. The natives of Malekula were Malenesians and were reported to be quite primitive, still unuaccustomed to caucasians exploring their land. This first-hand account reveals indigenous customs and beliefs, implements and their purpose, and also discusses cannibalism. Two previous surveyers, Mr. McPahail and Mr. Deacon both died of blackwater fever before completing their work on the island. Their untimely deaths made it difficult for Miss Cheesman to later enlist native guides to accompany her, as they believed that death was always due to supernaural interference. Unwittingly, Cheesman earned a reputation of being some kind of super-bush-devil and was indeed able to achieve her objectives.

Engaging descriptions of eminent entomologist and author Lucy Evelyn Cheesman's journey to Vanimo, then north to Humboldt Bay (Tepati) and the Cyclops Mountains, with further excursions to hill villages in the boundary mountains of Papua New Guinea, from where she intended to collect twenty thousand insects for the South Australian Museum. Vivid anecdotal descriptions of encounters with the Tepati people; the people of Molol and Wanimo; incidents with crocodiles; life of the indigenous people in the villages near Vanimo; Vanimo itself and the efforts of the local mission there run by Father Hittenberger and Brother Michael. Cheesman devotes a lot of text to the 'forest people and hunters' of Krissa, recounting their ritual 'kill-song' connected with the pig hunt and their frightening beliefs in the mysterious 'sangumen' or sorcerer. Notable geographical detail includes descriptions of the Oinake Massif and Mount Oinake with its breath-taking cliffs of vivid colour, contrasts of bright green madreporic shrubs against dramatic purple shadows and stark white limestone.

Significant for its early account of biodiversity in the now protected "Coral Triangle" of the Pacific, Cheesman's succinct and well illustrated primary source reveals highlights of an entire year of entomological research on little-known islands of the Pacific, just north of the Dampier Strait, in Papua New Guinea, on behalf of the Natural History division of the British Museum. The splendid coral reefs of Mayalibit Bay, limestone mountains and formations, a wealth of exotic vegetation, mangrove swamps, fauna and reptilia are but a few features examined. On the volcanic Mount Nok she set up camp, where she interacted with native inhabitants of small villages, remarking on their language, education, and on previous feuds with "Bush Tribes.' On Japen island she first establishes camp on Mt. Baduri, from where she collects samples and observes birds. before relocating to two other locations. In the tropical forests for six months, many samples were acquired, and a remarkable storm was documented.

A few small chips and short closed tears at edges; several short separations and very minor losses along folds. Contemporary agent's ink stamp on cover panel. Tape repair across portion of horizontal fold; one panel with patches of light staining. A scarce colorful promotional for the Rock Island Route as well as its national and international connections with a fascinating stamp of an Australian sales agent. One side of the sheet prints an extensive promotional text and timetables for the various routes and services of the Chicago Rock Island & Pacific Railway. The main side of the sheet prints a map of the United States with state borders shaded in four colors highlighting the principal routes of the Rock Island from Chicago to Minnesota Iowa and Kansas and its connections to points on both the East and West Coasts. An inset map at lower right promotes the Rock Island as part of a transcontinental route between the United Kingdom Ireland and Australia. Most interestingly this copy is stamped on the cover panel with the information of a George. H. Hibbard "Australian Passenger Agent America's Cons'd Trans-continental Railways 6 Bridge Street Sydney N.S.W." Hibbard was evidently the agent in charge of distributing information about the trans-America route in Sydney one of its end points. Several issues of this map were published during the 1880s all scarce. We locate copies of the present 1885 issue at Stanford SMU and the Library of Congress. Geo. F. Cram unknown books

CONDITION: Very good margin chipped at upper right corner a few minor stains. <p>A rare and striking broadside issued by the Chicago Rock Island & Pacific Railway advertising the Rock Island through-express route and promoting the railroad’s numerous destinations connections and amenities.</p> <p>Featuring the eye-catching mix of typefaces and colors that characterized railroad advertising in this era this attractive broadside promotes the numerous midwestern stops and destinations accessible via the Chicago Rock Island & Pacific R’y. At this time two through-express trains for Kansas and Nebraska ran daily in connection with the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe and Union Pacific railroads. As noted here meals were served in palace dining cars for seventy-five cents each and 150 pounds of baggage were allowed on each full ticket and seventy-five pounds on each half ticket free. The line’s various destinations included Iowa City Council Bluffs Denver Salt Lake City and San Francisco as well as “all points in Kansas Nebraska Colorado Arizona New Mexico Utah Montana and California.â€</p> <p>Showing the Rock Island R.R. in bold the inset map spans from Chicago and Lake Michigan in the east to Omaha and Council Bluffs in the west and reaches from St. Paul in the north to St. Louis and Kansas City in the south—with Lake Michigan lying in the upper-right corner. One axis of the line extends from Milwaukee and Racine Wisconsin to Leavenworth Kansas and another stretches from Chicago to Omaha. Various spurs connect to both.</p> <p>The lower section of the broadside features a marvelously detailed illustration of the interior of a palace dining car showing numerous fashionably dressed passengers seated and dining among African American waiters who are shown in the small kitchen and serving food. In the far-right end of the train men are depicted in drawing rooms—reading newspapers and smoking—and various railway operators and ticket-men appear at the ends of the car. Also included is a table of connections with various railroads that could be made in “Union depots.†Through-tickets via this route could be found on sale at all coupon offices in the U.S. and Canada. Those seeking additional information folders maps and times-tables are encouraged to contact any of the ten agents and managers of the Rock Island R.R. listed at the bottom who were based in New York Toronto Philadelphia Chicago etc.</p> <p>Established in 1847 as the Rock Island & LaSalle R.R. the company was reincorporated in 1851 as the Chicago & Rock Island R.R. Co.—its rails during this period reaching to Morris Illinois and later Ottawa. After acquiring the Mississippi & Missouri R.R. in 1866 the company was renamed Chicago Rock Island & Pacific R.R. Co. Expanding between 1873 and 1882 the company built more branch lines that reached into Iowa as well as Kansas City. In 1880 the firm was reorganized under the name Chicago Rock Island and Pacific R’y Co. and by 1883 extended nearly to the southern boundary of Kansas. After Congress granted passage across Indian Territory in 1887 the Rock Island R.R. began developing through Texas to Galveston as well as New Mexico Territory. During the 1920s the railroad enjoyed considerable success. In 1926 the company began constructing a freight line between Amarillo Texas and Liberal Kansas which was finished in 1929 and served to make accessible a country of rich grain. While the railroad industry continued fairly steadily through 1930 between 1931 and 1935 the Depression took a toll on the Rock Island R.R. and went into decline. Good only. <br /> <br /> Promotional broadside for the Chicago Rock Island & Pacific Railroad that operated from roughly 1850-1970 largely in the Midwest. Features a paper-cut illustration that was created on the occasion of the first trip made by steam-powered passenger cars in New York in 1831 before the company's incorporation. This broadside however was not issued until several decades later. The extensive railway inspired the tune "Rock Island Line" covered by country crooners Johnny Cash and Lead Belly. <br /> <br /> No separately cataloged copies in OCLC as of May 2026. "The Western Trail is published by the Chicago Rock Island & Pacific R'Y - The Great Rock Island Route - as a quarterly and issued in the interests of the above named Company. Its endeavor will be to give its readers in considerable detail facts as to emigration securing homes and the industrial interests of the country traversed by THE GREAT ROCK ISLAND ROUTE in the states of Kansas Colorado and Texas and the Indian and Oklahoma Territories and in a general way show the industrial interests in all the states traversed by this line. Copies for a year will be mailed free." ---- Quoted from The Western Trail. Features include the Seven-Six Ranch of W. D. Wagner a few miles from Dalhart Texas that shows a ranch scene with a wonderful view of a windmill in operation. Articles about towns in Indian Territory New Mexico Colorado Oklahoma and Texas with special coverage on Addington Indian Territory Cloudcroft New Mexico Santa Rosa New Mexico and Burlington Colorado the county seat of Kit Carson County. Also some information on growing crops such as rice and broom corn. All in all an interesting newspaper for its day. This item has had detailed work by a master paper conservator as it has been deacidified a few small portions have been mended with Japanese paper and any tears or paper loss have been infilled. It has been housed in a transparent polyester "Mylar" sleeve to protect against dirt and handling. A very good and serviceable copy.
