Pacific Railroad Reports
Reports of Exploration and Surveys to Ascertain the Most Practicable and Economic Route for a Railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean in 1853-4 Vol. III
4to original cloth rebacked with original spine strip laid on new endpapers. Illustrated with 20 of 21 color lithographs several steel engraved charts and shell engravings and three color lithographed folding maps. Table of contents list 20 color plates but some copies seem to have twenty-one. Two of the folding maps/charts have been placed in a rear endpaper pocket; one has a neat repair. A little rubbing to cloth and some minor darkening within. Could be missing one plate. Overall very good and nicely restored. One of the great sources of information on the west the Pacific Railroad Reports also contains some great illustrations. This installment Vol. III is no exception. Included are some interesting and colorful pictures of the Mojave Indians and their territory. This report contains intelligence on an expedition near the 35th parallel which took the southern route due west to the Pacific Ocean from Fort Smith Kansas that was conducted by Lieutenant A.W. Whipple and assisted by Lieutenant J.C. Ives. Ives would make his own mark on western expansion a few years later in his travels on the Colorado River. Wagner-Camp 263 Beverly Tucker hardcover

Washington: Printed by Beverley Tucker 1855 -1860. 12 volumes in 13. 4to. 11 4/8 x 9 inches. THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT CONTEMPORARY SOURCE FOR THE GEOGRAPHY OF THE WEST Senate Issue 3rd issue of volume XII. Published by the Federal Government at the instigation of Secretary of War Jefferson Davis and the result of numerous reconnaissance surveys of possible routes for the Pacific Railroad these reports represent the first attempt at a comprehensive systematic geographical exploration of the Western regions of America and made possible the first reasonably accurate topographical maps of the West. Four major routes were surveyed from a northern route terminating at the mouth of the Columbia River to a southern route running through Texas to San Diego. The report is finely illustrated with approximately 540 plates maps and tables depicting scenery native inhabitants fossils archaeology flora and fauna including many hand-colored. Of the eleven official expedition artists the most prominent is the renowned John M. Stanley 1814-1872 most widely known for his portraits of Native Americans and their way of life. PACIFIC RAILROAD. LOUGHBOROUGH John.
The Pacific Telegraph and Railway.
Saint Louis: Charles & Hammond 1849. 8vo. 8 6/8 x 5 4/8 inches. With the RARE 20 pages of preliminary material. Two FINE folding lithographed maps one showing ". the Position of Our Continent." and the other ". showing the Railroads of the United States" by Julius Hutawa some very light spotting. Modern calf backed marbled paper boards. Provenance: With the contemporary ownership inscription of W.H.B. Thomas at the head of the title-page. First edition and RARE. With the extremely important and fine large folding map showing the projected system of railways across the entire continent "to the Pacific and their connections exhibiting the lines of the States and the natural features of the Cuontry sic from Mississippi to the Pacific". The nation debated a suitable route for a Pacific Railroad from about 1845. In the fall of 1849 a Pacific Railroad convention met in St. Louis at which Loughborough defended Thomas H. Benton's plan of a line from St. Louis by way of Pueblo New Mexico to San Francisco with a branch to Oregon with an "examination of all the projects for the construction of these works with a proposition for harmonizing all sections and parties of the Union and rendering these great works truly national in their character" title-page. Loughborough also presented the case for a cross-continent telegraph: "Should the electric Telegraph be constructed forthwith across the continent. the enterprising individuals who stretch the wires will seek out of course the shortest and most practicable route for this great railway; and ere the immense work shall have been begun a broad belt of civilization will span the continent diffusing its whole-some principles and habits among the wild races who roam over the boundless plains of the west and preparing in advance for those who are to construct the railway. This belt will go on widening and widening until the vast pastoral region spread out between the line of the States and the base of the Rocky Mountains will be brought into cultivation and herds and flocks and rural beauty and domestic happiness will diffuse themselves over the whole land." page 47. Benton also argued that the government should build and own the Pacific Railroad and lease it to private operators or that private capitalists should build it aided only by a free right-of-way through public lands. Cowan p. 397; Graff 2536 without the preliminary 20 pp.; Howes L489 "c"; Sabin 42167; Wheat TMW 261. Catalogued by Kate Hunter. Saint Louis: Charles & Hammond, 1849. hardcover
