‎FORBES, Henry O.‎

‎Notes on the Cocos or Keeling Islands.‎

‎8 pages. Plus a fold-out colour map, measuring approximately 8.25 x 9 inches (21 x 23cm). Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. This is a fascinating expedition report on the Malay Archipelago, specifically the Cocos or Keeling Islands, accompanied by a visually appealing and valuable fold out colour map for illustration. Charles Darwin formulated a theory of the origin of coral reefs, This report mentions Darwin's theories and observations frequently, and is an excellent example of how early and how widely Darwin's work and theories were accepted by all his peers regardless of the apparent controversy he stirred up.‎

‎FORREST, Captain Thomas‎

‎A Voyage to New Guinea and the Moluccas, from Balambangan: including An Account of Magindano, Soloo, and other Islands; performed in the Tartar Galley, belonging to the Honourable East India Company, During the Years 1774, 1775, and 1776.‎

‎4to [29 x 24.5 cm]; [ii], xxiii, [i, errata], 388, 13, [i, directions] pp, engraved frontis portrait, plus 32 engraved plates, maps and charts including 20 folding. orig full tree calf, rebacked with orig gilt decorated spine, gilt title lettering on orig red spine leather label, wear at corners & spine ends, armorial bookplate of Robert Austen, marbled endpapers, interior clean, crisp & fine with only slight foxing. Taylor 401. Cox i, 301. Hill p. 108: 'Forrest sailed from Balembangan, in the 'Tartar', a native prahu of about ten tons burden, with two English officers and eighteen Malays, towards the Moluccas. He pushed further east than any of his company predecessors, eventually reaching Geelvink Bay in New Guinea. The voyage was one of examination and enquiry . . . the tact with which he conducted his intercourse with the natives, and the amount of work done in a small boat, deservedly won him credit as a navigator'. They explored the Gilolo Passage between New Guinea and the Moluccas, then sailed to Mindanao, examining the Sulu Archipelago, Mandiolo, Batchian and Waygiou, and reaching the Malay peninsula A vocabulary of the Magindano tongue is added at the end of the book. There is much on the native people, their customs, manners, activities. The book is famous for its fine engraved plates and maps.‎

1 Volume 4°, full cloth, label on spine with title and date, complete of plates, maps are missing, little foxing, waterstains on plates (Tome 2). The first journey was made to the mouth of the Coppermine River, largely overland and with the aid of canoes. The coast east of the mouth was surveyed. It is one of the most terrible journeys on record, may of the party dying from cold, hunger, or murder. The distance travelled was some 5,500 miles, and Franklin's narrative at once became a classic of travel literature. Franklin's second overland expedition made its departure from Fort Franklin on the Great Bear Lake. He traced the North American coast from the Mackenzie River, while John Richardson's partly explored the coast between the mouths of the Mackenzie and the Coppermine. The two expeditions together added 1,200 miles of coast line to the knowledge of the American continent, and Franklin received several honours and became a popular hero. The views of the Arctic scenery in this work are noted for their beauty", the plates were engraved by Finden, from drawings by Hood and Back. Sabin 25624‎
