GREEN, W.S.
Recent Explorations in the Southern Alps of New Zealand.
8vo. 14 pages, plus a remarkable folding colour map. This is a complete issue of the Royal Geographical Society, published February 1884, in excellent condition, containing the above narrative, and historically valuable map. Item is in original condition, with blue wrappers, as issued, complete with all the ads. The color map map highlights the Great Tasman Glacier of Mount Cook, and its tributaries, also shows glaciers and summits which were named for Hooker, Freshfield, Haast, Darwin, Whymper, Francis Joseph, Malte Brun and Hochstetter. A recollection of mountaineering adventure and splendour, Green describes the perils and milestones of the first ever European ascent to reach the summit of Zew Zealand's highest peak - Aoraki (Mount Cook)! Three different approaches were taken, first by the ridge on the south side, unsuccessful though lending to spectacular photographic views, the second attempt being a delightful challenge, 17 hours of arduous climbing along the northern arête later named the Hochsetter Ridge. Finally, via the Ball, Freshfield, and Linda glaciers, the climbers reached their highest point of the peak on third attempt, and, being depleted of provisions, began the return to base camp to record their observations. William Spotswood Green (1847-1919) was an Irish reverend, climber and naturalist, specializing in marine biology. He was a member of the English Alpine Club and became a mountain climber, especially known in Canada and New Zealand. Together with Swiss hotelier Emil Boss and the Swiss mountain guide Ulrich Kaufmann, on 2 March 1882, William S. Green made the first recorded European attempt to reach the summit of Aoraki (Mount Cook) which is the highest mountain in New Zealand, reaching 3,754 metres. Ascending via the Tasman and Linda Glaciers, they arrived within 50 metres of the true summit before being forced back by inclement conditions. In the late 1880s he partook in a survey expedition in the Rocky Mountains of British Columbia. In 1883, the author published a full account titled, "The High alps of New Zealand, or a Trip to the Glaciers of the Antipodes with an Ascent of Mount Cook." (London, Macmillan and Co.)

GREGORY OSIPOVICH BIENSTOCK, (1885-1954).
Pasifik için mücadele. I. ve II. kisim. [= The struggle for the Pasific]. Translated to Turkish by Kur. Yzb. H[amza] Gürgüç.
Very Good Turkish Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Turkish. 200 p., 9 numerous plans. Pasifik için mücadele. I. ve II. kisim. [= The struggle for the Pasific]. Translated to Turkish by Kur. Yzb. H[amza] Gürgüç. First Turkish Edition. Rare. Not in OCLC. According to the foreword, this translation were made by its French Edition. First Edition in English, 1936. Bienstock was trained as a lawyer. He was a Bolshevik during 1904-07 and then adhered to the Mensheviks, becoming one of the 'liquidators' in that faction. During the First World War, he and other Russian socialists, including his wife Judith Grinfeld and fellow Menshevik David Dallin, worked in the Institute for the Study of the Social Consequences of the War in Copenhagen that was run by Alexander Helfand (Parvus). He returned to Russia in 1917, and worked with the future Bolshevik economist Yuri Larin. He left the Soviet republic in 1918, but returned to live in Odessa in 1921-22, and was then arrested and deported from Soviet territory. He was a contributor to the Mensheviks' paper, the Sotsialistichesky Vestnik under the name G Osipov. Bienstock settled in Germany, and became active in the German Social Democratic Party in Berlin. Somewhat oddly, whilst he stood on the right wing of the Mensheviks, he adhered to the left wing of the SPD, joined the Zukunft grouping, and at one point sought a personal meeting with Trotsky. He also held a keen interest in mysticism and eastern religion, as can be seen in at least one of the six essays reproduced below. Bienstock wrote several books and pamphlets, including Deutschland und die Weltwirtschaft (Dietz, Berlin, 1931), Volk und Sozialdemokratie. Die innen- und aussenpolitischen Erfolge der Sozialdemokratischen Partei Deutschlands (Dietz, Berlin, 1932), Deutschland und Frankreich. Eine Europäische Auseinandersetzung (Werk und Wirtschaft, Berlin, 1932), Kampf um die Macht. Zur neuen Politik der Sozialdemocratie (Laubsche, Berlin, 1932), Zwischen den Weltkriegen (Zentralstelle fur das Bildungswesen, Prague, 1934, Europa und die Weltpolitik Die Zonen der Kriegsgefahr (Graphia, Karlsbad, 1936), The Struggle For The Pacific (Allen and Unwin, London, 1937 [.]. Turkish translator, Hamza Gürgüç was a Turkish soldier. After graduating from the Military Academy in 1933, he served in different positions with different ranks in the Turkish Armed Forces. He participated in the Dersim Operation in 1937. He was promoted to Brigadier General in 1961 and to Major General in 1965. (Source: Maxists Official Website).

GROVER, J. C.
Some Geographical Aspects of the British Solomon Islands in the Western Pacific.
20 pages with several in-text sketch maps and diagrams, plus a fold-out sketch map and a few photographic plates. Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. The author provides a detailed geological profile of the Solomons, from the Santa Cruz Group, Rennell, Bellona, the Shortlands, the Central islands, Western San Cristoval, and including also outlying coral islands. Featuring also Gaudalcanal and the Savo Volcano. Scientific observations were gained during his six years of prolific work. He remarks that Choiseul and the New Georgia Group were still 'largely unexplored', and expected to remain as such for another two years. John Grover was born in Sydney, Australia in 1920. He served in the Middle East and New Guinea during World War II with the Royal Australian Engineers of the AIF. He then followed a distinguished career in the earth sciences and mining industry in the South West Pacific, Australia and Africa. He received a Royal Society and Nuffield Grant in 1967 and managed the major U.N. Development Project in Ethiopia in 1975-77. His two books "The Struggle For Power" and "The Struggle For Cargo" are widely regarded as classics in the anti-uranium/nuclear and anti-mining movements. An Ambitious Undertaking for a Thorough Scientific Survey of the Solomon Islands.
