In Asia and the Pacific, Australia is incompletely mapped and still connected to New Guinea and only the western coastline of New Zealand is shown. Remnants of Terres Australes are still shown and in the Arctic there is a Northwest Passage linking Hudson's Bay with D. d'Anian,hand-coloured in outline.Jacques Chiquet (1673 - 1721) was an French cartographer. He only published two works; a small atlas, called Le Nouveau et Curieux Atlas Geographique et Historique and an atlas of France called Noveau Atlas Francais. Both were published in 1719. Chiquet died shortly after publishing these atlases consequently his works are rare. According to its title, this atlas was intended for the entertainment of emperors, kings, and princes! ‎Gentilhomme des mers imprégné de L'esprit des Lumières, Lapérouse est l'une des plus grandes figures de la marine française. Il participa à la guerre d'indépendance américaine et fut chargé par Louis XVI d'effectuer avec deux navires, "La Boussole" et "L'Astrolabe", un grand voyage où étaient prévues, entre autres, la reconnaissance des côtes de l'Alaska et une nouvelle exploration du Pacifique. Le 1er août 1785, les deux navires quittent Brest, ils se dirigent vers le cap Horn, abordent, huit mois plus tard, L'île de Pâques puis explorent Les îles Hawaï, Les côtes de l'Alaska, celles de la Californie, sillonnent les mers de Chine et du Japon, se dirigent, en novembre 1787, vers les îles Samoa où une partie de l'expédition est massacrée par les indigènes. Accablé par cette tragédie, Lapérouse fait lever l'ancre en direction de l'Australie et fait escale à "Botany Bay" (Sydney), alors occupé par les Anglais. Dans une précédente lettre adressée en France Le 7 février 1788, il précise qu'il souhaite visiter les îles Tonga, la Nouvelle-Calédonie, les îles Salomon, la Nouvelle-Guinée, l'Australie. Ce sera toutefois son dernier message puisque l'expédition disparaît peu après. Plusieurs recherches seront entreprises pour retrouver des traces des navires et tenter en vain de percer le mystère de ces disparitions. Quarante ans plus tard, Dumont d'Urville retrouvera des structures de l'épave de "L'Astrolabe". D'autres expéditions se succéderont jusqu'à nos jours avec une fascination croissante. En 1964, l'amiral de Brossard situera avec précision le lieu du naufrage de "La Boussole". Mais y eut-il des survivants ? Et dans ce cas, quelle fut leur fin ? Quel bilan peut-on faire des découvertes du gentilhomme des mers ? C'est à toutes ces questions que l'auteur se propose de répondre, dans un livre haletant qui fait revivre l'esprit de la marine royale et l'attrait pour l'inconnu qui motiva cet homme au destin exceptionnel et mystérieux.
