Proof plate 'Village of the Friendly Indians at the entrance of Bute's Canal' with the printed edition
1798. Very good condition. Scarce copper engraved proof plate for a very early image of Canada's British Columbia coast depicting First Nations people and their village as encountered by Captain George Vancouver. This is a proof for plate IV Volume I of George Vancouver's Voyage 'A Voyage of Discovery to the North Pacific Ocean and Round the World; in which the Coast of North-west America has been Carefully Examined and Accurately Surveyed .'. <br /> <br /> Vancouver's voyage was intended to ensure Britain's hold on territory on the Northwest coast of North America and to search for the Northwest Passage. Vancouver who began his career sailing under Capt. Cook explored the mouth of the Columbia River Vancouver Island and Puget Sound. <br /> <br /> There were no commissioned artists on the voyage; Thomas Heddington 1776-1860 was one of four gifted crewmen who made drawings of the new territory. A midshipman on the ship Chatham Heddington's view shows a tree covered hill with the village at the top with wooden fish drying structures on the slope and with First Nation people in canoe on the water. Bute's Canal is now known as Bute's Inlet about 125 miles from Vancouver on the southwest coast of British Columbia. <br /> <br /> Vancouver describes the scene depicted here: ". fires of the natives had been observed on entering this canal; which I distinguished by the name of 'Bute's Canal'. Here was found an Indian village situated on the face of a steep rock containing about one hundred and fifty of the natives some few of whom had visited our party on their way up the canal and now many came off in the most civil and friendly manner with a plentiful supply of fresh herrings and other fish which they bartered in a fair and honest way for nails". <br /> <br /> The drawings were later revised by William Alexander to illustrate Vancouver's Voyage. The original ink and wash sketch for this proof plate sold in Vancouver in 2012 for $55000 Heffel Fine Art Auction House May 17 2012.<br /> <br /> The proof plate printed on tissue paper laid on to India paper. Image size 13 1/2 x 10 1/2". Full paper size 17 1/4 x 12". Two faint diagonal creases upper left side.<br /> <br /> with the printed edition of the print titled 'Village of the Friendly Indians at the entrance of Bute's Canal'. "W. Alexander del: from a Sketch taken on the Spot by T. Heddington" and "J. Landseer sculp" printed below the image. London published May 1st 1798 by R. Edwards New Bond Street J. Edwards Pall Mall & G. Third edition “30000†of this nicely executed souvenir book issued in the same size as the popular “Boudoir†albumen souvenir photos for the Northern Pacific as its route opened through the Northern United States railroad lands for development across the West and expanding upon the much smaller original 1888 “Northern Pacific Tour.†These lithographs were created by hand-drawn images from photographs and printed using the Glaser/Frey lithographic process using five or more stones to lay down a series of separate shades offering a varnished look. The NP RR souvenir view book includes images of Dakota wheat fields Custer Battlefield monument Crow Indians at Yellowstone Montana cattle roundups and gold mining along the Columbia River with birds-eye views of Butte & Helena MT Spokane WA and salmon fishwheel as well as early birds-eye view of Portland OR. Views of Alaska include Sitka Juneau Totem Poles on Wrangel Island and the glaciers. The piece concludes with birds-eye view of San Francisco. W.C. A very large engraved chart printed on two sheets combined printed surface 1268 × 1015 mm overall total size 1280 × 1048 mm mounted on the original blue backing paper with the publisher's title-label on the verso. Chips and short tears to the margins in a few places clear of the printed surface; a few small light stains and other minor signs of age and handling; in very good condition with faint pencil annotations tracking a voyage to Hangzhou in September 1888. A very large and detailed blueback chart of the western rim of the Pacific Ocean including the East China Sea Philippine Sea and parts of the coastlines of Japan Korea China Taiwan the Philippines and New Guinea. It features eight inset charts: Guajan Island; Borodino Island; Umata Bay; Farralon de Medinilla; Rota; Alamagan; Guguan; and Rosario Island. Collection of a Women’s Army Corps Technician Concerning VE Day Reassignment to the Pacific Theater and Processions for Roosevelt and Eisenhower with Lyrical Descriptions of Paris on V-E Day
Paris France; and Washington D.C. 1945. Six 8 x 10 inch and smaller typed pages; one 4 x 5 inch card with two tickets; one twenty-six page 4 x 5.5 inch pamphlet; one six page 6 x 8.5 inch pamphlet; six 2.5 x 3.5 photographs and two 3 x 4.5 inch photographs. Of the printed matter most is affixed to paper some small tears and folds; overall excellent; photographs near fine. Mary J. Bremer 1917–2019 was a Technician fourth grade from Grant Township Nebraska. Her correspondents here include June Miller 1920–deceased an aviation cadet from Michigan and John Melotte 1919–deceased an artilleryman from Philadelphia. Bremer and Miller were members of the Women’s Army Corps WAC. Established in May of 1942 as the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps the WAC converted to active duty in July of 1943. The women of WAC known as Wacs served in noncombatant roles across the various theaters of World War II.<br /> <br /> Offered here is a small archive of Bremer’s documents and photographs relating to WAC: a few letters including a description of Paris the day after the Nazi surrender; two pamphlets including the War Department pamphlet Two down and One to go –; and a collection of photographs of Eisenhower’s victory parade and Roosevelt’s funeral procession.<br /> <br /> On April 12 1945 President Roosevelt died of a stroke in Warm Springs Georgia. His body was returned to Washington two days later and a military procession escorted it from the train station to the White House. Two photographs of the funeral procession are included in the archive. One showing a woman at the start of a section of the parade is identified verso as “WACs led by Capt. Machenâ€.<br /> <br /> The following month the Nazis surrendered. Bremer’s friend June Miller was stationed in Paris at the time. She wrote to Bremer the next day describing the celebration:<br /> “It began the night before when we stood on the roof and watched the flares go off all over the city--just like the 4th of July; the Sacred Couer was blazing with lights and it looked like a miniature fairy-land. Last night all the famous old buildings including the Arc d’Triumph was all lit up the fountains in the parks at Concord in front of the Trocadero--they were all going and the kids were wading and splashing around having the time of their life. It was really something to see--something the French had been waiting a long time for. “Fini le guerre†they kept saying--the end of the war!â€<br /> <br /> Miller also claims to have witnessed a bomber flying a celebratory loop through the Eiffel Tower:<br /> <br /> “When we came out of the Trocadéro the fountains were on and what a sight that is. Looking down over the water that looks like a miniature waterfall to the Eiffel Tower at the bottom of a small hill. And if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes I would never have believed that I saw a small bomber come through the bottom but that’s just what it did--and just did clear it too. The planes seemed to be going as wild as the people on the ground--they were so thick up there that pretty soon we thought surely something would happen.â€<br /> In June Dwight Eisenhower returned from Europe and a homecoming parade was held for him in Washington D.C. Six photographs of this parade are included in the archive including a shot of his plane arriving at the airport and one where he is visible standing in the back of a Jeep.<br /> <br /> Miller notes in her letter from Paris that “you wondered what was coming next; where we would go from here ‘cause in a sense there is still a war very definitely going onâ€. In fact John Melotte who seems to be Miller’s partner writes to Bremer that he “May be slated for that place they call the CBI but don’t tell June please. She does not want me to even mention the place in my letters so I let well enough alone†July 15 1945. Hostilities would continue in the CBI—the China-Burma-India theater—until September of that year.<br /> The process by which soldiers were selected to be sent to the Asia-Pacific theater is laid out in the War Department pamphlet Two down and One to go –. The pamphlet reminds them that there are still “a couple of big jobs ahead†the primary one being to “crush†or “smash†the “Japs†and the second one being to occupy and police “conquered lands . until the peril of future aggression is gone.†It is a visually striking piece with illustrations in a bold black and red color palette; its cover is a reproduction of a caricature of Hitler Mussolini and Hirohito by Polish-Jewish artist Arthur Szyk.<br /> <br /> Also included in the archive are a card from a friend with tickets to an American League baseball game; a humorous poem congratulating Wacs Ruth O.B. and Lenore I. Nier on new work assignments; and a Christmas 1945 WAC pamphlet with a dinner menu and list of WAC officers. The pamphlet assures the Wacs with a note from Colonel Kenton Cooley “Before another Christmas you all will have returned to civilian life and each of you will take with you my appreciation and my sincere admiration for a great job well done.â€<br /> Of interest to scholars of women’s history especially in the military; and of the events leading up to the end of the Second World War. unknown

One double-atlas folio colour map sized 38 x 41.75 in. colour lithograph on thick paper stock fold creases as issued minor age toning some minor edgewear slight weakening to fold creases at corners still a VG bright copy. First edition thus of this nicely executed map issued possibly printed by the Army Service Forces Orientation map series sometime during the Second Sino-Japanese War and possibly just prior to U.S. entry into World War II indicating much of the Pacific was still dominated by the Japanese Empire - Taiwan with Formosa Seoul Korea still indicated as Keijo Chosen as well as Port Arthur still indicated as Ryojun now Lushun China. The map features latitude and longitude lines but no coordinates with the Northeastern corner depicting the Aleutian Islands of Attu and Agattu Northwestern Corner Nepal & Tibet Southwestern corner ocean and Java & Sumatra while the Southeastern corner caputres the Coral Sea and tip of Australia coloured blue with white and brown. This has some similarities to the “waterproof†maps issued. No legend or printing information supplied. Printed colour map 40.3 x 53.6 cm; 46.5 x 60 cm sheet inset map of the North Pacific back cover from a section of the Chicago Daily Tribune newspaper pages 21-34 January 28 1942; central fold edgewear and browning with a few minor tears not affecting the map in very good condition. Based on a Rand McNally map and issued less than two months after the bombing of Pearl Harbour by the Japanese. The Tribune briskly got to work issuing maps for readers showing the beginnings of the war with Japan. Later maps were also published for sale separately but remarkably few have survived. The map shows "the nearness of our Aleutian Island chain west of Alaska to the islands of Japan. At Dutch Harbor and other points in the Aleutians are actual and potential sea and air bases lying on the shortest route from northwestern United States to Japan." The inset map at lower right situates the areas in the larger map in respect to the countries bordering the North Pacific Ocean. <br> <br>Included with the map is the complete newspaper section from which it is the final full page. Covering sport and the market with half a dozen popular comic strips including "Dick Tracy" and "Little Orphan Annie" it shows a domestic United States a world away from what had been seen as a European War. <br> <br>". the historic Chicago Tribune was an innovator in color inks and printing but also a pioneer in bringing colorful art in the form of illustrations photographs cartoons and advertisements to the average person in an everyday medium." see The Janet A. Dutch Harbor -- Japanese Target in the North Pacific.
Chicago.: Chicago Daily Tribune. Friday June 51942. Printed colour map on a single newspaper leaf 37.5 x 53.2 cm; 44.7 x 59.8 cm sheet inset legend marginal browning and at the folds some undulation of paper and tide mark along lower section but in remarkably bright very good condition. Strategic map published in the Chicago Daily Tribune "The World's Greatest Newspaper" on June 5th 1942 two days after the Japanese attack on Dutch Harbor the site of the US army and navy bases in the Aleutians and as it transpired at the outset of the Battle of MIdway. The owner and proprietor of the Tribune Robert McCormick was staunchly against the United States entering the war and had firm views once it had occurred that American resources should not be used defending the British Empire. Famously the Tribune published the "Victory Program" Roosevelt’s military plan to prepare the United States for possible entry into World War II and was subject to prosecution for an alleged violation of the Espionage Act relating to the newspaper’s front-page account of the Battle of Midway 4-7 June 1942. It became an important test case for the limits of free speech and censorship during war-time. <br> <br>The Legend shows territorial Control of Ocean Areas marking Japanese Naval and Air bases as of 1941 and "according to latest reports" those established in the first six months of 1942. Also shown are pre-war sovereignties as at the bombing of Pearl Harbour on December 7th 1941. The Anson Archipelago is shown but a question mark "indicates islands etc. whose existence or give position is doubtful…". . Chicago Daily Tribune. unknown
