The Islands were named for the consort of King George III by Philip Carteret the British naval officer and explorer who participated in two of the Royal Navy's circumnavigation expeditions in 1764–66 and 1766–69. His ship the Swallow gave her name to the Bay and Carteret's commanding officer on the first of his voyages John Byron to the Harbour depicted in this most attractive early chart. . Three photographic prints each approx 11 x 20 cms and three black and white engravings together 33.5 x 20.4 cms all captioned printed on two conjoined newspaper leaves pp 645-648 41 x 28.5 cms the associated articles: "Samoa in War-Time" in full with a cameo portrait of the Chief Justice of Samoa and "The Philippine Revolt." partial with a small sketch map of Malolos printed on the verso central fold a few small edge tears and faint toning but in good condition. Malcolm Ross the author and photographer of "Samoa in War-time" was a New Zealand freelance journalist and war correspondent for the New Zealand press as well as the Melbourne Age. In 1899 he spent three months in Samoa covering the clashes for the leadership of the colony that followed the death of Malietoa Laupepa the incumbent chief at the time. <br>Unusual late 19th Century coverage of Samoa especially by a New Zealand photojournalist. <br> <br>The second spread with the incomplete accompanying article by Joh F. Bass a "Special Correspondent of "Harper's Weekly" on "The Philippine Revolt" has an unsurprising pro-American tone: the armed conflict between the First Philippine Republic and the United States 1899-1902 was clearly viewed by the United States as an insurrection rather than as a continuation of the struggle for independence by Filipino nationalists that had begun in 1896 with the Philippine Revolution. . This extraordinary archive of eight photo albums filled with over 1700 photographs documents the engineering and military career of Col. Boyd Yaden. The albums begin with his service in the 55th Coastal Artillery in Hawaii from 1926-1928 followed by his work as an engineer for the Federal Public Works Administration in Wrangell Petersburg Sitka Juneau Anchorage and Seward Alaska on construction projects in the 1930s including laying public sewers building power plants railroad trestles and logging camps. Two of the most significant albums document his Executive Officer Commands and post as Division Engineer for the Air Transport Command while building and surveying airfields in California Canada and Alaska during World War II filled with 100s of well-documented construction and aerial photographs. In addition Yaden prepared a career resume album filled with commendation documents work reference information and photographs documenting his many projects.

With 484 original photographs many with annotations on versos some mounted with glue others with corners some loose a few missing sized from 1 x 2 in. up to 8 x 10 in. Limp textured brown calf post-binder rounded corners sewn at gutter margin with brown silk braid some edgewear rubbing weakening to many leaves at gutter margin an excellent archive filled with bright images strong contrast. This immense photo album archive assembled by Lt. Colonel Boyd Yaden 1906-1980 incorporates eight albums. The first of these albums document his career serving with the Provisional Co. No. 2 1st Battalion 55th Coastal Artillery of the U.S. Army serving the batteries at Fort Kamehameha Fort Kam. The 55th CA was equipped with 155 mm. Grande Puissance Filloux guns typically mounted atop concrete Panama Mounts which enabled the pieces to traverse 360 degrees as well as 75 mm. field pieces. These remarkable images show the artillery gun crews test firing the 155 mm. guns loading shells night firing camp drills inspections athletics expanding the tracks for the 41st Coast Artillery Locomotive at Fort Kamehameha and more. Of special interest are three photos documenting the first Navy Pacific Flight by Commander John Rodgers in the PN-9 Seaplane from San Pablo CA non-stop to Honolulu HI which ran out of gas and landed in the Pacific Ocean. The crew fashioned sails from wing fabric and later leeboards to steer the flying boat and finally came within 15 miles of Kauai where it was discovered by the USS R-4 submarine. The second & third albums chronicle Boyd Yaden’s life with his wife Myrtle Yaden 1901-1988 moving from Klamath Falls OR to Alaskan Resident Engineer and Inspector for the Public Works Administration overseeing the installation of the sewer system in Petersburg Alaska with several photos showing street scenes digging up of streets to lay pipe earthmoving equipment steam shovels and finally the finished streets with bustling economic activity. In addition there are photos of building railroad trestles bridges and logging operations on Wrangell Island Alaska with photos showing the construction logging sites totem poles and then his work as supervising engineer for the Public Works Administration during the Depression building a power plant near Anchorage AK followed by the project of rebuilding the power plant in Seward AK with photos showing the phases of construction. The third album includes photos of the couple on the steamship SS Hazel B No. 2 hunting & fishing in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest the Pioneers Home in Sitka as well as documenting trips to visit relatives in Seattle North Dakota and New York. Two very large photo albums are devoted to Colonel Yaden’s activities as Division Engineer for United States Army Corps of Engineers and later for the Air Transport Command in Alaska and Western Canada. The albums open with an extensive group of photos of Hammer Field near Fresno California now Fresno Yosemite International Airport with images showing the laying of foundations training crash of a B-24 Bomber June 27 1942 the theaters bowling alley Sub Exchange NCO Club tennis courts recreational facilities swimming pool sandstorms and more. In addition Yaden oversaw the mineral and strategic materials facilities in Trona CA with images of the nearby Ruth Mine loading operations onto trucks and railcars. In 1943 Yaden began an engineering and photographic survey of the Western Canadian air bases for the ATC and has included large photos of Calgary Air Base aerial views of Edmonton Air Base and the Edmonton Air Base Edmonton Airport Wing Hangars under construction the Edmonton Satellite Airport aerial views and detailed photos of the Namao Airbase Alberta along with others such as the Grand Prairie Airbase Dawson Creek Fort Neslon Airbase Watson Lake Y.T. Whitehorse Y.T. and the ATC engineering post including the sawmill lumber racks and construction equipment in Canada. The last half of the fifth album is devoted to airfields and airbases in Alaska including the Northway Airfield showing aircraft landing hangars under construction engineering and structural detail photos Tanacross Airport AK Ladd Field and a whole series of large aerial views of the Galena Flood. Yaden also oversaw Airfield site surveys in Port Clarence Nome Point Spencer Imuruk Basin even including a dog sled team and Native American guide in the depths of winter. In addition The final two albums are devoted to the life and activities of Myrtle A. “Madison†Yaden 1901-1988 who taught school in Whitefish Montana then moved to Mullan Idaho the Puget Sound region during the 1920s and later Klamath Falls where she would meet Boyd Yaden. This album includes photos of the gold dredges in Mullan Idaho near Wallace North Dakota Agricultural College band members Montana High School basketball champions football teams hijinks with fellow students and teachers the YWCA Camp on Bainbridge Island treks to Seattle Poulsbo and other areas around the Sound. Boyd Yaden was the nephew of Oregon Pioneer George Nurse who founded Linkville attended the Univ. of Oregon served with the 55th Coast Artillery in Hawaii joined Battery D 249th Coast Artillery of the Oregon National Guard was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant became a licensed civil engineer in Klamath Falls worked in Alaska Canada California and Oregon where he became an engineering expert on building and working on permafrost in the Arctic and later worked with the Flood Control Agency in Phoenix AZ before returning to Klamath Falls OR as basin engineer. Promotional poster from Pacific Northern Airlines advertising their service to Alaska that features a montage of illustrations depicting skiers a carved and painted totem a fisherman in action and a bear on its hind legs.<br /> <br /> In 1932 Arthur G. Woodley founded Woodley Airways flying routes across Alaska. In 1945 Woodley changed the name to Pacific Northern Airways and moved the company headquarters to Seattle. In 1951 Pacific Northern Airways was able to start running regular flights between Seattle and Anchorage and continued to operate these and its routes within Alaska until it was taken over by Western Airlines in 1967. One double atlas folio colour lithograph map sized 28 x 40.5 professionally mounted on archival linen sized 32 x 45 in. w/ scale of 1:24000 minor edgewear slight age toning at fore-edges and lower corner still a VG bright copy. First edition of this very uncommon Progressive Era map of Portland Oregon in the years between the Lewis & Clark Centennial Exposition and World War I. The map depicts public lands including township range and section grids along with neighborhood and addition place names steam & electric interurban railroads and electric streetcar lines along with parks city limits and radial distances from point in downtown Portland included. Place names included Zion Town the old steel bridge built in 1888 followed by a new Steel bridge which opened later in 1912 the Plank/Old Canyon Road Laurelhurst and others. Of particular interest beyond most maps of Portland during the era this map delineates a significant portion of Vancouver Washington prior to the construction of the Interstate Bridge across Hayden Island as well as inroads into portions of Northwest Portland and Washington County in the Southwest. Fritsche 1877-1928 was an intrepid German-American photo-lithographer architect printer and later photographer who first arrived in New York before coming West to the Pacific Northwest in 1907 where he set up an architecture and engraving firm with his brother Rudolph Fritsche. Wenzel is perhaps best remembered as architect of the historic Henry C. & Wilhemina Bruening House Craftsman bungalow located at 5919 North Williams in Portland’s Humboldt neighborhood erected in 1910. The Kwakiutl continued to potlatch furtively until the ban was rescinded in 1951. Dramatic masks symbolic wall paintings headdresses feast dishes and blankets are among the objects reproduced together with archival and contemporary photographs attesting to the persistence of the potlatch tradition. Artwork features a young boy with his dog and a kite squinting at skyward as four two-engine airplanes fly overhead. Gifford 1859-1936 is considered perhaps Oregon’s most famous photographer and his beautiful images included here depict Rooster Rock sternwheeler at the Dalles Latourelle Falls Cape Horn the Pillars of Hercules Multnomah Falls shot 12 years prior to the historic Benson Footbridge at Multnomah Falls constructed by Robert Lee Ringer in 1914. Other images include the Sternwheeler Regulator Warren’s Salmon Cannery Sternwheeler Bailey Gatzert approaching the Cascade Locks Fish Wheel on the Columbia the Oregon Railway & Navigation Chicago-Portland Special leaving Tunnel 2 and the Native American burial ground of Memaloose Island. Gifford first worked in Portland until 1895 then opened a studio in The Dalles and later returned to Portland in 1910 where he continued to operate both studios until about 1920. First edition of this scarce souvenir album intended to promote the history and economic strength of the Pacific Northwest and to extoll the virtues of Portland. The editors have includes 100s of photos and information about Portland buildings persons of interest sporting areas mountain climbing on Mt. Hood natural landmarks logging orchard farming shipping lines on the Columbia and Willamette industries and more. Damp staining to upper corner of first 35 or so pages more pronounced at title and near the front. Spine cocked and with ends chipped chipping along edges of wraps. Pencil annotation to front cover. A very good copy. <br /> <br /> Third edition following the 1841 and 1843 Poughkeepsie printings of this popular text issued as an "Extra" of the New York Tribune. The book is essentially an account of the first overland to Oregon migration of emigrants bound for the territory led by Farnham and known as the "Peoria Party." They left Independence Missouri on May 20th 1839 and as a substantially smaller group arrived in Oregon on September 23 1839 with Marcus Whitman. First edition. 4to 4 viii 412 2 errata cxxii pp with "General History of the Fur Trade" following the Voyages section and errata leaf. Complete with half title often lacking frontis portrait three large folding engraved maps. Fine 1/2 polished calf tooled in blind and lettered in gilt on spine marbled boards endpapers and page edges. Few stains and foxing to prelims most notably at the inner margin of the frontis and title pages. Otherwise scattered light foxing mainly marginal and more pronounced on the final dozen leaves or so. Maps quite nice with typical offsetting from folds some foxing and toning. A very good copy in attractive binding housed in a custom oatmeal cloth Solander box lined with green felt gilt spine label. <br /> <br /> A cornerstone work on early Pacific Northwest exploration being the first account of crossing the continent from ocean to ocean by a white man some dozen years before Lewis and Clark. This text also represents the first published account of the fur trade which was attributed to Roderick Mackenzie. A nice copy in attractive binding. <br /> <br /> Howes M 133. Sabin 43414. Dessiné par Poirson . Ecrit par Beaublé'. Original folds as issued; some minor uneven tanning; in very good condition. An uncommon chart of the Pacific Ocean and Australia showing magnetic variation and dip drawing on observations made in the course of Pacific voyages after 1775 most notably Cook's third voyage. It is most likely from a duodecimo edition of Buffon's 'Histoire naturelle générale et particulière' around the end of the eighteenth century 'PL. III. Tome XVI' and 'Page 58' are printed in the top margin. It is based on a larger chart in four sheets attributed to Jean-Charles de Borda. The engraver Tardieu is one of half a dozen members of the family working as engravers at the period one of whom P.A.F. Tardieu would engrave the charts published in the official account of the Baudin voyage. F. Dufart unknown

4to 11 ½ x8 ¾ original law calf morocco illustrated 4 134 85102 114 2 iv 64 pp. Some scuffing and wear to covers slight gouge to front joint chipping to edges. Two plates detached one with a chipped corner. Overall very good. Organized by the War department under the direction of Jefferson Davis who was Secretary of War at that time a collection of volumes was produced in the quest for the best route for a railroad to the West. Jefferson Davis wrote part of the introduction to this series and outlines the goals of the project. This report is on routes explored in Northern California and Oregon. Specifically the expedition was to look for a railroad route crossing the Sierra Nevada near the source of the Carson River and to see if it was feasible to connect the Sacramento valley with the Oregon Territory. Most of the color plates in this volume are located in the first three parts of the publication which is focused on topography geology and botanical subjects. This volume includes 23 color lithographs of scenery and botanical subjects 2 hand colored plates of birds and 24 steel engraved plates. Wagner-Camp 264a. Beverly Tucker, unknown

4to leather spine and tips with marbled boards 36 Illustrations include 21 tinted/color lithographs one folding diagram two folding maps and a couple of black and white plates 36 14 136 127 175 pp. Binding with some wear at the spine and extremities hinges cracked some pages are a bit loose plates all present but probably not bound in correct order folding maps have a few tears some staining to front endpapers but not into the balance of the text plates and text show some aging foxing and browning but most plates resonably are clean. One of the great sources of information on the west the Pacific Railroad Reports also contains some great illustrations. This installment Vol. III is no exception. Included are some interesting and colorful pictures of the Mojave Indians and their territory. This report contains intelligence on an expedition near the 35th parallel which took the southern route due west to the Pacific Ocean from Fort Smith Kansas that was conducted by Lieutenant A.W. Whipple and assisted by Lieutenant J.C. Ives. Ives would make his own mark on western expansion a few years later in his travels on the Colorado River. The substantial amount of information on various Indain tribes makes this installment an important one. Since many of these volumes are broken for the plates they are getting somewhat scarce.
