‎TWO PASTOR'S REGISTERS RECORDING PERSONAL NOTES SERMONS BAPTISMS MARRIAGES AND FUNERALS PERFORMED MOSTLY IN MONTANA IDAHO AND WASHINGTON STATE BETWEEN 1915 AND 1938‎

‎Various places mostly Sand Point Id. and Victor Mt 1915-1938. Two volumes. 2142; 142pp. nearly all filled in in manuscript. Quarto. Original three-quarter leather and pebbled black cloth gilt. Leather rubbed both spines perished boards detached and most leaves of first volume loose hinges of second volume cracked but holding. Internally clean and unmarked. The bindings only fair but text near fine. Two volumes of an unidentified pastor's register for a variety of locations in Idaho Montana and Washington beginning during the First World War and continuing throughout the entire interwar period. In it the unnamed pastor records his sermons the dates and locations they were given their titles the number of people in the congregation and frequently supplies notes about the service weather or other local events. In addition he has recorded extensive lists of baptisms marriages new church members and funerals throughout the entire period providing valuable demographic and genealogical information. On the rear pastedown of the earlier volume the writer has provided a brief history of his service: he began his ministry in 1893 and spent several years preaching in Alabama before moving to a variety of churches across the country including in Tennessee New York and Texas.

The registers begin with a new appointment in Sand Point Idaho in November of 1915. During this period of worldwide tension and struggle the pastor's early entries often allude to the political situation at home or the ongoing war. On November 5 1916 - the day of the 1916 Presidential Election - the topic of his sermon appropriately enough is "Presidents." On December 28 of that year he notes that "Soldiers came home." Since the United States had yet to join in World War I this perhaps refers to new trainees inducted as part of the National Defense Act of 1916 which significantly increased the size of the Army and National Guard. The next year America had joined the war and supplies at home were scarce in the face of international pressures and German submarine patrols. In this environment a sermon was delivered on October 14 1917 titled "Food Conservation." In 1918 he notes a guest lecture by a "Mr. Krikorian" which proved to be "a splendid meeting on the Armenian situation. Collection $409.45." That year saw the beginning of several years of armed conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan exacerbated by meddling from the Soviets Ottomans and the British. Things didn't improve quickly for Sand Point as September of 1918 saw the first hometown death - a "Memorial service for W.D. Martin - Killed in France. First of Co. A to fall." His loss was dearly felt by his community as evidenced by a turnout of 225: much greater than the average congregation of fifty to eighty for that church. We unfortunately are not privy to the speech our record keeper would have made around Armistice Day November 11 1918; he was unable to preach for six weeks due to catching the Spanish Flu. The pandemic was keenly felt even in Idaho where annotations over the next several months note that the "flu scare is on." His topical lectures for the period end on April 13 1919 with an entry titled "Lecture on the League of Nations."

Besides making note of current events in his sermons the preacher at times uses these registers as a journal. Particularly after moving to a new position serving Victor and Stevensville Montana in 1921 he struggles to reckon with the frigid temperatures and seems to have developed an interest in sports often noting local baseball and basketball games. One day in particular his sermon was not well attended because he assumes "many at ball game." Aside from taking notice of "much sickness" during the 1923 measles outbreak current events feature less in the remainder of the register. The Depression doesn't seem to have been strongly felt in his leg of Montana - or at least it is not much reflected in the register except perhaps for slightly decreased congregations in 1930 and 1931 which quickly recovered to record numbers or a 1933 sermon on "Hunger & Thirst." A guest lecturer "Reverend Adams of China" also delivered a speech on that country in 1933 but it is unclear whether or not that was related to the ongoing Uighur uprising or simply a description for a Western audience. The final entry is for a sermon given on Thanksgiving of 1938.

An extensive and detailed record of a pastor's work throughout World War I and the entire interwar period augmented by a remarkable wealth of detail on local baptisms funerals and marriages in Idaho and Montana. hardcover‎

‎Carte des Déclinaisons et Inclinaisons de l'Aiguille Aimantée Rédigée d'après la Table des Observations Magnétiques faites par les Voyageurs depuis l'Année 1775‎

‎Paris: F. Dufart 1790. Very Good. Paris F. Dufart circa 1790. A hand-coloured engraved map printed surface 378× 415 mm sheet size approximately 420 × 540 mm. 'Gravée par Tardieu l'Ainé . Dessiné par Poirson . Ecrit par Beaublé'. Original folds as issued; some minor uneven tanning; in very good condition. An uncommon chart of the Pacific Ocean and Australia showing magnetic variation and dip drawing on observations made in the course of Pacific voyages after 1775 most notably Cook's third voyage. It is most likely from a duodecimo edition of Buffon's 'Histoire naturelle générale et particulière' around the end of the eighteenth century 'PL. III. Tome XVI' and 'Page 58' are printed in the top margin. It is based on a larger chart in four sheets attributed to Jean-Charles de Borda. The engraver Tardieu is one of half a dozen members of the family working as engravers at the period one of whom P.A.F. Tardieu would engrave the charts published in the official account of the Baudin voyage. F. Dufart unknown‎

‎Reports of Exploration and Surveys to Ascertain the Most Practicable and Economic Route for a Railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean… In 1853-4… Vol. III‎

‎4to leather spine and tips with marbled boards 36 Illustrations include 21 tinted/color lithographs one folding diagram two folding maps and a couple of black and white plates 36 14 136 127 175 pp. Binding with some wear at the spine and extremities hinges cracked some pages are a bit loose plates all present but probably not bound in correct order folding maps have a few tears some staining to front endpapers but not into the balance of the text plates and text show some aging foxing and browning but most plates resonably are clean. One of the great sources of information on the west the Pacific Railroad Reports also contains some great illustrations. This installment Vol. III is no exception. Included are some interesting and colorful pictures of the Mojave Indians and their territory. This report contains intelligence on an expedition near the 35th parallel which took the southern route due west to the Pacific Ocean from Fort Smith Kansas that was conducted by Lieutenant A.W. Whipple and assisted by Lieutenant J.C. Ives. Ives would make his own mark on western expansion a few years later in his travels on the Colorado River. The substantial amount of information on various Indain tribes makes this installment an important one. Since many of these volumes are broken for the plates they are getting somewhat scarce. ‎[RARE PHOTOGRAPHIC ALBUM OF JAPANESE RED CROSS NURSES TOWARDS THE END OF THE PACIFIC WAR].‎

‎日本赤十字看護婦写真アルバム. Nihonsekijūji kangofu shashin arubamu. Photographic Album of Japanese Red Cross Nurses.‎

‎Japan. Circa 1945. Photographic album 15.2 x 21cm 44pp 57 black and white photographs many with captions and identification of those in the photograph on reverse cord tie. Some photographs loose and a little worn at edges mild silvering on a few but overall a good unusual collection. This photographic album showcases a rare collection of black and white original photographs of young Japanese Red Cross nurses who worked at the rehabilitation hospitals in Yugawara a well-known hot spring resort west of Tokyo. Towards the end of the Pacific War the Japanese Imperial Navy established rehabilitation facilities in Yugawara through requisition of existing accommodation so that repatriated injured and sick servicemen were able to recuperate. The utilised inns included Seikoen and Seiranso. Many Japanese Red Cross nurses were sent there to look after those soldiers. This collection shows their daily lives and special occasions in photographic images.

The album has Yugawara printed on its front cover and does not record its owner's name but it becomes clear from reading the captions and descriptions the owner was most likely a Japanese Red Cross nurse from Wakayama Prefecture. About 20 nurses from the same district formed a group and they worked and lived together during their assignments. The group was initially sent to the South location unidentified and returned to Japan on the hospital ship the Hikawa-maru before starting to work in Yugawara around 1944. The photographs in the album include group photographs of nurses and sailors on a new year's day sports day activities of playing volley ball games entertainment activities and some personal portraits of close nursing friends. Most of the photographs have captions and descriptions on reverse. Even though the photographs were taken towards the end of the war the general atmosphere where the young nurses worked closely together is peaceful and idyllic. Some scenic photographs of Hakone appear towards the end. . unknown‎

‎[South Pacific Defence Conference, 1888]‎

‎A photograph of the 1888 South Pacific Defence Conference participants taken in the grounds of Government House Sydney opposite Farm Cove‎

‎Sydney: Kerry & Jones 308 George Street 1888. Sydney Kerry & Jones 308 George Street 1888. A high-gloss gelatin silver photograph 222 × 296 mm laid down within a gilt border on the original cardboard mount with the photographic studio's details in gilt in the bottom margin. Also mounted there is a small gelatin silver photograph 47 × 165 mm of the signatures of the eight participants 'Government House Sydney Jan. 25 1888' is written below the original signatures. The item is in a contemporary frame wood with gilt-decorated plaster a little chipped now lacking the original glass visible image size 315 × 350 mm external dimensions 423 × 458 mm. The contemporary label of Cole's Book Arcade Melbourne is mounted on the verso. The main photograph has a couple of tiny surface chips to the top edge and a few tiny marks to the bottom right-hand corner; the mount is a little marked possibly lightly water-streaked but fortunately the photograph is untouched; these trifling blemishes have little impact on this fine portrait. This informal group portrait features the Governors of each of the Australian colonies along with the Governors of Fiji and New Zealand. It was taken on 25 January 1888 the day before the centenary of the arrival of the First Fleet at Port Jackson the main reason for their presence in Sydney. It features left to right Sir Robert George Crookshank Hamilton 1836-1895 KCB LLD Governor and Commander in Chief of Tasmania and its dependencies; Sir Anthony Musgrave 1828-1888 GCMG Governor of Queensland; Sir Charles Bullen Hugh Mitchell 1836-1899 Governor of Fiji; Henry Brougham Loch 1st Baron Loch 1827-1900 GCP GCMG PC Governor and Commander in Chief of Victoria; Charles Robert Wynn-Carrington 1st Marquess of Lincolnshire 1843-1928 KG GCMG PC JP DL Governor of New South Wales; Sir Frederick Napier Broome 1842-1896 KCMG Governor of Western Australia; Lieutenant General Sir William Francis Drummond Jervois 1821-1897 GCMG CB FRS Governor of New Zealand; and Sir William Cleaver Francis Robinson 1834-1897 GCMG FRGS Governor of South Australia.
Extensive research notes come with this item; they were compiled with the assistance of Dr John Fahey author of 'Australia's First Spies' Sydney 2018 and 'Traitors and Spies: Espionage and Corruption in High Places in Australia 1901-1950' Sydney 2018. Among much else the notes have identified a slightly variant photograph taken at the same time as this one held by the Blue Mountains City Library; the identity of the sitters comes from a letter and diagram sent to them from the Mitchell Library in 1929. 'From the various sources available most notably the title given by the State Library of New South Wales this photograph commemorates an unofficial side-meeting of these Governors to discuss Australia's interests in the South Pacific'. Dr Fahey puts it more succinctly when he says it likely offers 'evidence of one of our earliest "secret" off to the side policy conferences'. The notes provide a lot more background information for the purchaser. A few incidentals not mentioned there: Sir Anthony Musgrave was Governor of South Australia from 1873 to 1877 and he died on 9 October 1888; Sir William Jervois was Governor of South Australia from 1877 to 1883; Sir William Robinson was Governor of Western Australia three times between 1875 and 1895 1875-1877 1880-1883 and 1890-1895. Provenance: the Sloane Pastoral Family of the Riverina purchased at the estate clearing sale in April 2021. Kerry & Jones, 308 George Street unknown‎

A sampling: Mutton Feet à la Créole Liver à la Bégué Jambalaya of Chicken Codish with White Beans Bisque of Crayfish Creamed Cauliflower Onion Salad Eggplant with Rice and Ham Mayonaise of Celery and Shrimps Pineapple with White Wine. ~ The title displayed on the wrappers is misleading: the atmospheric essays and testimonials – arranged by a literary journalist who contributed to Southern Pacific's promotional magazine Sunset Henry Monroe Mayo 1868-1950 – reveal little regarding the eponymous originator of the recipes or the history of the cuisine that brought her fame. Only pages 47-68 contain recipes by Elizabeth née Elisabetha Kettenring Dutreuil Bégué 1831-1906 the proprietary chef of the beloved restaurant in the Vieux Carré – the second oldest such establishment in New Orleans – located on the Rue de la Levée Decatur Street after 1870 downriver from Jackson Square and across from the French Market. An immigrant from southern Germany she had opened a coffee shop with her husband Louis Dutreuil in 1863. After his death in 1875 she married again and with her second husband Hippolyte Bégué 1842-1917 reopened in the same location with the aim of serving one meal per day – a “second breakfast†beginning at 11:00 a.m. – to accommodate laborers in the meat markets and on the docks who started work at dawn. A fuller history by David Shields is available in his The Culinarians Chicago: University or Chicago Press 2017 pages 270-273. By the mid-1880s trade fairs held in the city were bringing tourists as well and Bégué’s became a destination on its own. Madame Bégué died in 1906. The restaurant continued under management of her daughter but was sold in 1914 to relatives of the family Tujague competitors since 1856 on Decatur Street a few doors away. ~ A shorter tribute with recipes pages 69-74 is accorded another restaurateur presumably Victor Béro d. 1904 an immigrant from Belgium who had presided over Victor's Restaurant since 1873. Mayo appears to confuse the "Monsieur Victor" of his time with the founder and namesake of the establishment Victor Martin 1812-1865; cf. Shields page 136 445. ~ The Sunset Route of the Southern Pacific Company was the southernmost of the transport lines to the West Coast originally contemplated by the series of Pacific Railroad Acts between 1862 and 1866. Of the resulting publicly subsidized corporate consortia that would transform western North America – known collectively as the transcontinental railroads – Southern Pacific was already a mammoth system in 1900 including smaller subsidiaries such as the Texas and New Orleans Railroad and extending across territories that would later become New Mexico and Arizona as well as northwards through Nevada Utah and much of California. The in-house Sunset magazine appears to have been printed close to headquarters in San Francisco but like many publications issued by the transportation industry Mme.
