Anderson, Kent
NIGHT DOGS SIGED COPY
Tucson: AZ: Dennis McMillan 1996. 1st editionso stated December 1996. Fine in dustwrapper. Author's second book and first mystery. With a three-page foreword by James Crumley who called this book the best cop novel he had ever read. A small first printing of 1900 copies quickly sold out. SIGNED COPY signature only by the author on the title page. The second detective Hanson novel the protagonist of "Sympathy for the Devil" after his return from Vietnam to his job as a beat cop in Portland Oregon -- a path the author himself also took. "Former police officer Kent Anderson author of the memorable Vietnam War novel Sympathy for the Devil returns with a powerful new novel about a Vietnam-vet cop who still carries the war inside himself. Searing and brutally honest Night Dogs plunges us into the free-fire zones of our cities where the legendary thin blue line is breaking down. The North Precinct of Portland Oregon is home to two kinds of sergeants and lieutenants who've screwed up somewhere else and patrolmen who thrive on the action on the Avenue. Officer Hanson is the second kind a veteran who has traded his Bronze Star for a badge. War is what Hanson knows and in this battle for Portland's meanest streets he's fighting not so much for the law as for his own code of justice. Hanson is a man who seems to fear nothingexcept his own memories. And it is his past that could destroy him An enemy in the department is determined to bring him down by digging into his war record and resurrecting the darkest agonies of that nightmare time. And Hanson himself risks everythinghis career his equilibrium even his lifewhen the only other survivor of his Special Forces unit comes back into his life. Doc Dawson is a drug dealer and a killer.but he's the one man Hanson can trust. Night Dogs is an extraordinary work from a powerful and authentic voice in American fiction. Recoiling from the violence that Hanson deals with every day the violence that is in Hanson readers will also understand the compassion that drives him. A novel remarkable for its razor-sharp characterizations and dialogue its freshness of observation Night Dogs -- and Hanson -- will remain etched in the memory for a long time to come.". Signed. First Edition. Cloth. Fine/Fine. Limited Edition. Dennis McMillan Hardcover

ANDERSON, Charles Roberts
Journal of a Cruise to the Pacific Ocean, 1842-1844, in the Frigate United States with notes on Herman Melville
8vo [22 x 14.5 cm]; x, 143 pp, frontis, plates from paintings of Journal of William H. Meyers, painted during the cruise, tables, notes, index. original cloth with gilt title lettering on spine, dj (lightly chipped at spine end, not price clipped), fine in vg dj. A picture of this book is available upon request by email. Hill 463. The anonymous author was probably a petty officer with access to the ship's records so that the diary combines the accuracy and authenticity of an official log book with the informal discursiveness of a personal record (dj). It includes the earliest known account of official uniforms in the American navy. The journal contains the fullest published account of the capture of Monterey four years before the Mexican War. Herman Melville was one of the members of the crew and the work includes the first published account of his life during this period of his South Seas adventures, out of which experiences he wrote White Jacket, or the World in a Man-of War.
