‎Japan: Pan-Pacific Science Congress 1926. Wraps. Very Good. 30 pages. Stapled printed wraps. Tipped in at rear is a folding multi-color 13 x 10 3/8 inch map "Topographical Map of Central Kinki Environs of the Cities of Kyoto Nara Osaka and Kobe". Some minor sunning a few small stains. Some penciled notes throughout. Printed by the Tokyo Printing Co. Ltd. Executive Office: Rooms of the National Research Council Department of Education Tokyo on back wrapper. Wraps. Unlike most travel guidebooks the entries in this pamphlet are written by various scientists from the region: Geography Geology Botanical Notes Insect Fauna and a brief guide to the places the Congress-Party are scheduled to visit. Even scientists need some time off!<br/><br/>Nature volume 119 page 178 29 January 1927 contains a useful abstract about the Congress for those not familiar with it: "The third Pan-Pacific Science Congress was held at Tokyo on Oct. 30—Nov. 11 1926 under the auspices of the National Research Council of Japan and through the generosity of the Imperial Japanese Government. It must well have been one of the most remarkable scientific meetings ever held. The main objects of the Congress like those of the first held in Honolulu in 1920 and of the second held in Australia in 1923 were 1 to initiate and promote co-operation in the study of scientific problems relating to the Pacific region more especially those affecting the prosperity and well-being of the Pacific peoples and 2 to promote a feeling of brotherhood and to strengthen the bonds of peace among Pacific peoples. It was laid down that all branches of physical and biological science formed proper subjects for discussion provided that they bore upon some Pacific problem."<br/><br/>OCLC Worldcat notes two copies of this pamphlet and two other variations. ‎Souvenir pamphlet 8vo colored printed pictorial wrappers illustrated 16 pp. Folded and creased down the middle with a little wear at the fold some minor rubbing to wrappers normal aging; otherwise very good. This is a scarce piece of ephemera commemorating the 1911 groundbreaking ceremony by President William H. Taft for the exhibition in the Golden Gate Park. While the purpose of the exhibition was to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal it seemed to function more as a worlds fair held in San Francisco. It took over three years to construct and the exhibition ran from February through December 1915. There are a number of black and white photographs in the booklet including a double page panoramic view of the city of San Francisco. The activities of the ceremony are recorded in this pamphlet which feature speakers songs marches and what they had for dinner Blair-Murdock Co., books‎

‎The Adams Valley and Glaciers, Southern Alps of New Zealand.‎

‎8vo. 6 pages, plus map and photographic plates for illustration. Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. Recounting mountaineering expeditions as early as the Baker and Butler survey of 1861, the author's illustrated compendium focuses on two expeditions undertaken in 1934 and 1935 by members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club, one of whom is the author himself. The unknown watershed of Mount Adams into the Perth and Poerua rivers was the question to unravel on New Zealand's South Island, resulting in fascinating discovery, climbing, and mapping. Herein are described specific glaciers, unnamed cols, glacial tributaries, and climbing adventures. Excerpt from the text: "The Main Divide of the Southern Alps between Canterbury and Westland is a chain of glaciated peaks linked with curious passes. The subranges are equally intricate and the whole forms a fascinating wilderness... The story of the exploration of the Southern Alps is long and eventful, and even in 1938 was not complete."‎

‎THE BLACK AND THE RED: A Homer Evans Murder Mystery‎

‎N.Y.: Random House Inc. 1956. 1st edition so stated. Near fine in near fine dust jacket not price clipped $2.75 price intact in protective mylar cover. Light soiling at rear jacket with black top-stained upper page edges spotted. Very clean unfaded gray cloth boards with black title box gold lettering and decoration on spine. "John Dickson Carr and others pioneered mystery as slapstick; Elliot Paul merged the genre with surreal farce with dozens of of continuing eccentric characters tumbling from book to book in ever more outlandish situations all unified by the superhuman but never stuffy figure of Homer Evans." -- Encyclopedia Mysteriosa by William DeAndrea. Trust Homer Evans that epicurean among detectives to chose Las Vegas Nevada as the newest field for his unorthodox investigations into murder and assorted skullduggeries. In the American capital of sky-high gambling and lavish entertainment of explosions--temperamental and nuclear--of gangsters and atomic scientists the imperturbable sleuth unravels a mystery that is a sinister as it is wildly fanciful. The touch of madness in Elliot Paul's method adds to his extravaganzas of crime the fillip of satire and the zest of his own riotous imagination. As capricious and unpredictable as the roll of the dice or the fall of the roulette ball The Black and the Red pays off at fabulous odds. The reader is the winner!. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. Illus. by Tobey Barney. Book. Random House, Inc.‎
