‎San Francisco 1902. Very good. 120pp. including twenty plates many folding. 12mo. Original limp calf front cover gilt lettered. Light wear to spine and extremities. Internally quite clean. A very interesting early 20th-century manual and rule book for personnel in the Maintenance and Way Department of the Southern Pacific Railroad. Contained here are rules and instructions for a wide array of railroad employees including roadmasters bridge superintendants trackmen bridgemen and other watchmen. The principal portion of the text comprises nearly 270 general rules and regulations such as those governing the adjustment of woodtruss bridges lining and surfacing track keeping clear rights of way and establishing standards for numerous other basic repairs on track ties signals and other critical infrastructure. A short appendix contains laws from the several states in which Southern Pacific operated regarding the accidental killing of livestock by trains and railroad employees. At the rear are twenty plates many folding with reference diagrams for track and other maintenance projects.<br /><br />This edition is revised from the first edition of 1898 with a substantially different pagination. Several plates have been excised from the rear of this copy; however the only other copy that we locate of this work at UC Santa Barbara also is lacking a number of plates. books‎

Primo volume della monumentale storia del Pacifico, con cui Oskar Spate ha voluto ricostruire la storia di quella sconfinata distesa d'acqua che divide le Americhe, l'Oceania e l'Asia. L'autore ripercorre le fasi piu' importanti del XVI secolo, un secolo leggendario: prima di allora nessun eruopeo aveva potuto ammirare una spiaggia dell'Oceano e anche i suoi  mari. Il libro prende le mosse da un mondo senza il Pacifico, passa poi all'essenziale contributo di Magellano, primo a solcare le acque del pacifico, sino ad arrivare a Sir Francis Drake sino alle risposte spagnole con Sarmiento e inglesi con Fenton e Cavandish.‎

Continuazione de  ‘Il lago spagnolo’, monumentale storia del Pacifico che parte da Magellano, l'autore, in questo secondo libro, focalizza l'attenzione  su personaggi e  vicende che trasformano quella immensa distesa senza nome in un complesso intreccio di rapporti commerciali e strategici, teatro di aspri conflitti. Il volume si apre con l’entrata in scena degli olandesi, pronti ad assumere un ruolo trainante nelle Indie Orientali e a soppiantare i portoghesi. Contemporaneamente si assiste all’arrivo dei russi nel Pacifico, alla nascita degli imponenti traffici mercantili con la Cina, alle ripercussioni sull’oceano delle guerre europee, al dilagare dei bucanieri, agli assalti britannici all’Impero spagnolo in Sud America e nelle Filippine, a nuovi, grandi viaggi di esplorazione fino  al sorprendente ritorno di fiamma della Spagna, siglato dall’espansione dell’Impero in Cile e in California. The Neapolitan-born Gaspare Luigi Pacifico Spontini 1774-1851 was a celebrated composer of operas in his day who made his career in Paris under the patronage of the Empress Josephine. His most famous opera LA VESTALE premiered in Paris in 1807 and according to Grove's Dictionary underwent over 200 performances in Paris by the year 1824. As late as 1954 in fact in celebration of the composer's 180th birthday it enjoyed a revival at La Scala with Maria Callas in the leading role.<br/><br/>According to calendars only these two years during Spontini's time in Paris had a September 22 which fell on Wednesday. Spontini left Paris in 1819 to accept a position with the Dresden opera. unknown books‎
